ISCAS - A single switcher combined series parallel hybrid envelope tracking amplifier for wideband RF power amplifier applications
IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems proceedings. IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 2016Co-Authors: Nijad Anabtawi, Rony Ferzli, Haidar M. HarmananiAbstract:In this paper, an improved architecture for RF power amplifier envelope tracking Supply modulator is presented. It consists of a single switched Mode Supply regulator and one linear regulator. The switched Mode Supply regulator has two outputs, one of which is used in conjunction with the linear regulator to provide a wideband, high efficiency power Supply to the RF amplifier, whereas the second output provides a band limited high efficiency Supply to the linear regulator. The design offers improved power efficiency, reduced system complexity and area savings since the dual output switched Mode regulator requires one inductor and a simple control loop. The design was implemented in 14nm CMOS process and validated with simulations. The Supply modulator achieves a peak efficiency of 74% with a 6 dB PAPR 20MHz LTE signal at 29dBm output power.

Polar SiGe Class E and F Amplifiers Using Switch-Mode Supply Modulation
IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2007Co-Authors: Jennifer N. Kitchen, I. Deligoz, S. Kiaei, B. BakkalogluAbstract:Two integrated polar Supply-modulated class E and F power amplifiers (PAs) in 0.18-mum SiGe BiCMOS process are presented. The amplifiers are used to transmit GSM-EDGE signals with an envelope dynamic range of 11 dB and a frequency range of 880-915 MHz. The amplifiers use switch-Mode dc-dc buck converters for Supply modulation, where sigma-delta (SigmaDeltaM), delta (DeltaM), and pulsewidth modulation are used to modulate the PA amplitude signal. A framework has been developed for comparing the three switching techniques for EDGE implementation. The measurement results show that DeltaM gives the highest efficiency and lowest adjacent channel power, providing class E and F PA efficiencies of 33% and 31%, respectively, at maximum EDGE output power. The corresponding class E and F linearized amplifiers' output spectra at 400-kHz offset are -54 and -57dBc, respectively

Linear RF polar modulated SiGe Class E and F power amplifiers
IEEE Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFIC) Symposium 2006, 2006Co-Authors: J.d. Kitchen, I. Deligoz, S. Kiaei, B. BakkalogluAbstract:Two fully-integrated linearized polar modulated class E and F power amplifiers (PA) with switch-Mode Supply modulation are presented. The PAs are implemented in a 0.18mum SiGe BiCMOS process and can be used to transmit varying envelope RF signals operating at 870-920MHz. The class E PA gives a peak output power of 26.4dBm and a maximum efficiency of 62%. The class F PA gives peak output power of 23dBm with 53 % drain efficiency. When using delta modulation to control the switch-Mode Supply, the class F and E polar amplifiers give ACPRs for an EDGE input waveform (at 400kHz offset) of -46dBc and -37.7dBc respectively

envelope tracking two stage power amplifier with dual Mode Supply modulator for lte applications
IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2013Co-Authors: Daehyun Kang, Byungjoon ParkAbstract:This paper presents an envelope tracking power amplifier (ET PA) using a dual-Mode Supply modulator for handset application. The Supply modulator has a combined structure with a linear amplifier and a switching amplifier. The dual-Mode Supply modulator operates in high-power Mode and low-power Mode by providing the Supply voltage of the linear amplifier of 5 and 2.5 V, respectively. For 1.74-GHz long-term evolution signal with 10-MHz bandwidth, 6.44-dB peak-to-average power ratio, and 16-quadrature amplitude modulation, the ET PA delivers a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 39.8%, an evolved universal terrestrial radio access adjacent channel leakage ratio (E-UTRAACLR) of - 35.7 dBc, and an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 3.81% at an average output power of 27 dBm. The ET PA also delivers a PAE of 22.6% at an average output power of 18 dBm, which is 6.6% higher than that of the conventional ET PA and 13.1% higher than that of the standalone PA. The Supply modulator is connected to a drive stage and a power stage of the PA simultaneously for further enhanced efficiency at a power back-off region. The dual-Mode two-stage ET PA delivers a PAE of 38.1%, an E-UTRAACLR of - 32.9 dBc, and an EVM of 4.74% at an average output power of 27 dBm. The dual-Mode two-stage ET PA also delivers a PAE of 26.3% at an average output power of 18 dBm, which is 7.8% higher than that of the conventional two-stage ET PA and 16.7% higher than that of the standalone PA.

2012 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest, 2012Co-Authors: Daehyun Kang, Byungjoon ParkAbstract:This paper presents an envelope tracking power amplifier (ET PA) using a dual-Mode Supply modulator for handset applications. The Supply modulator has a combined structure with a linear amplifier and a switching amplifier. The dual-Mode Supply modulator operates in high power Mode and low power Mode by converting the Supply voltage of the linear amplifier to 5 V and 2.5 V, respectively. For 1.74-GHz long term evolution signal with 10-MHz bandwidth and 6.44 dB peak-to-average power ratio, the ET PA delivers a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 39.8% and an evolved universal terrestrial radio access adjacent channel leakage ratio of −35.7 dBc at an average output power of 27 dBm. The ET PA also delivers a PAE of 22.6% at an average output power of 18 dBm, which is 6.6% higher than that of the conventional ET PA and 13.1% higher than that of the stand-alone PA.
