    Workflow is a set of tasks which are systematized to achieve certain business goal(s), where the tasks run in a particular order under automatic control. Artifacts, collections of data items, are necessary for task (process) executions in a workflow. However, an execution may yield unexpected results due to improper Artifact manipulation: e.g., activities miss Artifact or Artifact conflict occur at an activity dynamically. Therefore, the analyses on Artifact usage in design phase are very important for quality insurance. This paper presents a Model of Artifact flow diagrams to state the Artifact usage anomalies in processes transmitting Artifacts based on DCDC, Distinct Control and Data Channel, Model. There are four types of Artifact usage anomalies identified in DCDC and the formal statement of each anomaly is described correspondingly for future study of anomaly search.

  • Styles in business process Modeling: an exploration and a Model

    Abstract:

    Business process Models are an important means to design, analyze, implement, and control business processes. As with every type of conceptual Model, a business process Model has to meet certain syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic quality requirements to be of value. For many years, such quality aspects were investigated by centering on the properties of the Model Artifact itself. Only recently, the process of Model creation is considered as a factor that influences the resulting Model’s quality. Our work contributes to this stream of research and presents an explorative analysis of the process of process Modeling (PPM). We report on two large-scale Modeling sessions involving 115 students. In these sessions, the act of Model creation, i.e., the PPM, was automatically recorded. We conducted a cluster analysis on this data and identified three distinct styles of Modeling. Further, we investigated how both task- and Modeler-specific factors influence particular aspects of those Modeling styles. Based thereupon, we propose a Model that captures our insights. It lays the foundations for future research that may unveil how high-quality process Models can be established through better Modeling support and Modeling instruction.

    Formal Models of business processes are used for a variety of purposes. But where the elicitation of the characteristics of a business process usually takes place in a collaborative fashion, the building of the final, formal process Model is done mostly by a single person. This article presents the design and implementation of a Recommendation-Based Process Modeling Support System with ‘social features.’ A process builder using this system will receive recommendations to complete or edit a formal business process Model on the basis of previous usage of Modeling fragments by her peers. Such features potentially improve the Modeling process and, as such, the Modeling outcome, that is, the quality of the process Model. This article also contains an evaluation of the system's usage and effectiveness, which builds on an experimental design. It is shown that process builders are inclined to follow up on the provided recommendations and that this will improve the semantical quality of the created Model. However, information on peer usage of Modeling fragments does not play a big role in selecting the recommendations being followed up. This article fits within a stream of research that puts emphasis on the Modeling process, rather than on the Model Artifact.

    Abstract:

    It is shown using a quasigeostrophic multilevel channel Model that the stabilization of a zonal baroclinic flow by an unstable wave would be essentially baroclinic if the meridional domain is narrow. In contrast, an unstable baroclinic wave in a sufficiently wide domain would first propagate meridionally away from its source while intensifying and would then equilibrate/decay barotropically. The equilibration in this case occurs mostly by inducing a strong horizontal zonal shear and also partly by reducing the zonal baroclinicity. Since a strong impact of the lateral boundaries is generally a Model Artifact, barotropic equilibration is suggested to be more important in the atmosphere. The corresponding increase in the meridonal scale of the wave field associated with the meridional propagation of the unstable wave in a wide domain is self-limiting by the beta effect. This result can be understood in terms of a well-known aspect of geostrophic turbulence. When the Model width is only comparable to the zonal scale of the unstable wave, reflection of the waves by the lateral boundaries would naturally prohibit the cascading process and would result in baroclinic stabilization.
