Inventing the archive Testimony and virtue in Modern Historiography
History of the Human Sciences, 2013Co-Authors: Kasper Risbjerg EskildsenAbstract:This article investigates the emergence of the archive as the primary venue for the production of historical knowledge in the 19th century. The turn to archival research, the article argues, may be considered as a response to the discussions about the problems of testimony that dominated 18th- and early 19th-century German writings on the methodology and epistemology of historical research. These discussions, especially regarding the epistemic virtues of witnesses, also helped create the particular culture of knowledge-making within German historical scholarship that enabled the archival turn. The article illustrates these developments through the examples of Johann Peter von Ludewig, who was one of the most prominent historians of the early German Enlightenment, and Leopold von Ranke, who is normally considered the founder of the Modern historical discipline and the most important advocate of the 19th-century archival turn.

Leopold Ranke’s Archival Turn: Location and Evidence in Modern Historiography
Modern Intellectual History, 2008Co-Authors: Kasper Risbjerg EskildsenAbstract:From 1827 to 1831 the German historian Leopold von Ranke travelled through Germany, Austria, and Italy, hunting for documents and archives. During this journey Ranke developed a new model for historical research that transformed the archive into the most important site for the production of historical knowledge. Within the archive, Ranke claimed, the trained historian could forget his personal predispositions and political loyalties, and write objective history. This essay critically examines Ranke's model for historical research through a study of the obstacles, frustrations, and joys that he encountered on his journey. It shows how Ranke's archival experiences inspired him to re-evaluate his own identity as a historian and as a human being, and investigates some of the affiliations between his model for historical research and the political realities of Prince Metternich's European order. Finally, the essay compares Ranke's historical discipline to other nineteenth-century disciplines, such as anthropology and archaeology.

Galileo and the Medici: Post-Renaissance Patronage or Post-Modern Historiography
Transversal: International Journal for the Historiography of Science, 2017Co-Authors: Michael SegreAbstract:At the beginning of the eighties of the last century, the issue of “patronage” began to arouse scholarly interest and gained importance. Galileo became a test case: his importance, and the importance of patronage – and that of the Medici in particular – go beyond the historical junction of the scientific revolution and have corollaries in the more general attitude to science and knowledge. This case furnished a new line of research for the historical sociology of science. As far as Galileo is concerned, my claim is that the new trend belongs to post-Modern Historiography, rather than to post-Renaissance Medici patronage.

The Spread of Post-Modern Historiography in China in the Past Twenty Years
Journal of Shandong University, 2010Co-Authors: Guo Zhen-danAbstract:As an uninvited late comer, post-Modern Historiography attracted little attention from the Chinese historians when it made its first appearance in the world. However, as the questions raised by post-Modern Historiography have becomes increasingly difficult to ignore (this is the case especially since the advent of the new century), intensive researches and heated discussions on post-Modern Historiography have been undertaken. Journal papers focusing on specific topics, books aiming at systematic studies and numerous translations introducing Western works serve as the three channels through which post-Modern Historiography was brought into China. The significance of the spread of post-Modern Historiography in China is two-fold: deconstruction and reconstruction. In addition, it is suggestive of a deeper influence of globalization on the study of history in China. The constant growth and development of "New Social Historiography" marks that Chinese Historiography has now become part of the world community and will play a more and more important role.

Modern Historiography: The Relevance of the
2007Co-Authors: Khurram QadirAbstract:Historiography in the Modern West, particularly during the last century, has made many contributions to the study of the Crusades whereas Muslim scholars are few and far between. Muslim contributions to this subject generally come from lands that suffered from the event directly or they emanate from pens of Muslims who work in research institutions of the West today. A view that gained converts among Muslims since the birth of Israel, which registered a surge among the intelligentsia of Pakistan when Iraq was attacked, is that military advances of the West are an attempt to achieve the unfinished agenda of the Crusades. However, not much seems to have been written on the subject in the Muslim world. In contrast, European historians have contributed considerably to the subject in recent times. Some of the works have been reconciliatory and some defied the apologetic trend regarding the "Modern crusade.,s The present paper seeks to compare three British works in the light of general trend of scholarship on this subject in the English language.

A New Vista in Historiography:the Rise of Popularization in Historical Narration——Also on Post-Modern Historiography
Journal of Tsinghua University, 2009Co-Authors: Guo Zhen-daAbstract:The rise of popular culture and the reversion of secular society are two backgrounds behind the popular narrative history. The extreme pursuit of scientific in history studying sets up an insurmountable obstacle for the public readers. With the emergence of post-Modern Historiography in 1960s and 1970s,the voice of narrative writing requested by the readers give a strong challenge of so-called right and proper concepts, such as Grand Narration,Great History.Today, the most remarkable event is the changing from the Narrative Philosophy of History to the long-standing Analytic Philosophy of History. In fact, the post-Modern Historiography is a popularization movement of Historiography in western areas of historical research. This movement injectes a new vitality in historical research, promotes the expansion of the historical research field, and changes the historical research writing style. Therefore, the contribution brought by post-Modernism to the development of history must be affirmed, though the extreme relativism in post-Modernism itself should be criticized.
