Effect of sodium carboxymethylcelluloses on the disintegration, dissolution and bioavailability of lorazepam from tablets

SinghAbstract:AbstractA new range of soudium carboxymethylcelluloses (i.e. nymcelR types ZSB-10, ZSB-16 and ZSD-16) were included into lorazepam tablet formulations to improve the disintegration, dissolution and bioavailabiltiy of the drug. Tablets of the batch G containing 5% Nymcel ZSB-16 exhbibited quicker disintegration, faster dissolution, and higher rate and extent of bioavailability in Mongrel Dog in comparison to tablets of the other batches.

Formulation, in-vitro release and therapeutic effect of hydrogels based controlled release tablets of propranolol hydrochloride

SinghAbstract:AbstractMatrix based controlled release tablets of Propranolol Hydrochloride (PHCL) were formulated using hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (sod. CMC) and their combinations. The in-vitro dissolution kinetics revealed a zero order release for selected drug, HPMC and sod. CMC combination. The selected formulation was evaluated in Mongrel Dog by recording the isoprenaline induced tachycardia and measuring the inhibition of tachycardia. The results showed the sustaining therapeutic effect of the formulation.

Therapeutic Management of Intranasal Transmissible Venereal Tumor in a Dog

Physical examination revealed characteristic hard mass irregularly distributed in nasal cavity. Blood samples were collected for haematology and biochemistry examinations and found within normal limits. Based on clinical examination and fine needle aspiration cytology, the case was diagnosed as transmissible veneral tumor with abundant vacuolated cytoplasm containing fine nuclear chromatin pattern, large round cells with round nuclei. The Dog was treated with intravenous administration of Vincristine sulphate in four weekly doses leading to complete regression of lesions.

Hepatoid adenocarcinoma of anal region in a Dog

SelvarajAbstract:Lemon sized growth was noticed in the right side of the anal opening in a 10 year old Mongrel Dog. The fine needle aspiration biopsy revealed polygonal cluster of cells with multiple nucleoli. Histopathological examination revealed islands of tumor cells separated by vascularized connective tissue stroma. Based on the gross and histopathological observations, the tumor was diagnosed as hepatoid adenocarcinoma.

Immunohistochemical diagnosis of metastatic transmissible venereal tumor in Dogs

Karthi, S Sasikumar, C Yogesh, Gvs RaoAbstract:Transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) is a well-documented transplantable tumor in Dogs with no breed or sex predilection and a low metastatic rate. A 9 year female Mongrel Dog was presented for necropsy. Gross examination revealed roughly oval, hard, greyish white mass on right abdominal subcutis and multiple varying sized(2-14 mm) white nodules on lung lobes. Cytological and histological features were consistent with TVT. By immune histo chemical staining, the neoplastic cells were positive for vimentin and negative for S100, cytokeratin, CD3 and CD79a.

Evaluation of fibrin sealants for central nervous system sealing in the Mongrel Dog durotomy model.

Muench, James HartAbstract:BACKGROUND Watertight repair of the dura is imperative after neurosurgical procedures involving the brain or spinal cord because inadequately treated leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from punctured dura can have serious consequences such as meningitis, arachnoiditis, or epidural abscess. OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of Evicel Fibrin Sealant (Human) to prevent CSF leakage using a 2.0-cm durotomy Mongrel Dog repair model and to compare the tissue response with Tisseel (a fibrin sealant) and Duraseal (a synthetic polyethylene glycol [PEG] hydrogel sealant). METHODS The canine durotomy repair model was used. This well-characterized model assesses the ability of sealants to achieve intraoperative watertight seals of the dura mater, as well as long-term safety and efficacy. This study included 27 Mongrel Dogs and had a 28-day duration. RESULTS The 3 sealants were 100% effective in preventing CSF leakage intraoperatively at 15 mm Hg. The 2 fibrin sealants were 100% effective in postoperative sealing; the PEG hydrogel was not. Microscopically, the tissue changes induced by Evicel at the durotomy site were similar in nature except for foamy macrophages seen only with the PEG hydrogel. The extent and severity of adhesions at 28 days were less with the fibrin sealants than with the PEG hydrogel. CONCLUSION Evicel, a fibrin sealant, was safe and effective in achieving and maintaining a watertight seal of the dura. The performance of the fibrin sealants was similar to that of the synthetic PEG hydrogel sealant with the exception of a Duraseal seal, which leaked.
