Light Fastness and Shade Variability of Tannin Colorant Dyed Wool with the Effect of Mordanting Methods

Effect of metal Mordants and their combinations on wool dyeing with Terminalia chebula natural dye were investigated and correlation between dye structures, effect of metal Mordant and Mordanting methods were established. Results reveal that T. chebula can be used as yellow dye with or without metal Mordants to get a variable range of shades on wool with good color strength and fastness properties, and appreciable shade variations with Mordanting methods observed. Color performances of dyed substrate indicated substantial improvement in depth of shades and color fastness in case of Mordanted samples. Pre-Mordanting with tin and post-Mordanting with alum proved to be most effective for increasing K/S values of the dyed substrate under the optimum dyeing conditions.

Dyeings were carried out in neutral acidic, and alkaline medium using 0.5%–5% dye concentrations pre-treated with (4.5% iron + 0.1% tin), (2.5% iron + 0.5% tin), and (0.5% iron + 0.9% tin) Mordant combinations. A total of 54 shades have been developed by varying the amount of dye and percentage combination of Mordants. The hue of color ranged from reddish-brown, greenish-yellow to dark yellow. The color of dyed woolen yarns was investigated in terms of color strength (K/S), CIELab, CIELch values. Fastness properties (light, washing, and rub/crocking) of dyed woolen yarn samples were also assessed.

The dyeing was carried out using 5% and 10% o.w.f. dye concentration in presence and absence of ferrous sulphate, stannous chloride and alum Mordants. The colour strength, CIELab values and fastness properties of dyed samples were also assessed. FTIR spectra of untreated, Mordanted and dyed wool yarn were investigated to study the interaction between fibre, Mordant and dye. The structural morphology of wool yarn was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The susceptibility tests for R. emodi L. were carried out in terms of disc diffusion, growth curve and viability assays against all the tested microorganisms. Dyed samples showed very effective antimicrobial properties showing more than 90% microbial reduction in both bacterial as well as fungal population. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mordant dyeing behaviors of cotton fabric with tea polyphenols
2020Co-Authors: Tang Ren-chengAbstract:The Mordant dyeing of cotton fabric with tea polyphenols(TP) is carried out with ferrous sulfate,ferric sulfate and aluminum potassium sulfate as Mordants.The influences of pH value,immersion temperature of TP treatment and the dosage of Mordant in post-Mordanting on dyeing behaviors are investigated,furthermore,the color fastness and UV protection property of the dyeings are measured.TP is more stable under acidic condition than neutral and alkaline conditions owing to the increase in the ionization and oxidization of phenolichydroxyl.The colors of the cotton fabrics with ferrous sulfate,ferric sulfate and aluminum potassium sulfate as Mordants are violetish grey,pale grey and pale yellow respectively,and the color strength varies with metal ions.It is found that the dyeings feature excellent gray scale for staining of color fastness to soaping and rubbing fastness,while the gray scale for color change of color fastness to soaping is poor.In addition,cotton fabrics dyed with TP show good UV protective performance.

Influence of Mordant dyeing properties on tea polyphenols for wool
Wool textile journal, 2020Co-Authors: Yang Cheng, Tang Ren-chengAbstract:The sorption of TP on wool and its dyeing property with Mordants,such as ferrous sulphate and copper sulphate were investigated.The influence of pH,immersion temperature and immersion time on dyeing behavior of TP on wool with post-Mordanting treatment were discussed.The three kinds of dyeing,pre-Mordanting,simultaneous Mordanting and post-Mordanting,were employed for the fabrics treated with TP to discuss the influences of quantities of Mordant and TP on dyeing behavior of TP on wool.The fastness of washing,rubbing and light of dyed fiber were observed.The results indicated that the colors of the wool Mordanted with ferrous sulphate and copper sulphate were violetish iron grey and bright bronze brown,the mediandeep color and great fastness were obtained after Mordant dyeing of TP with TP-98 5%(owf) at pH 4.1 and 90 ℃ for 60 min.The fastness grades of wool samples were all above 3,whereas the staining fastness grades were 5.The washing and light fastness of wool Mordanted with copper sulphate were better than that with ferrous sulphate.

Mordant dyeing of silk with tea polyphenols
2020Co-Authors: Tang Ren-chengAbstract:With ferrous sulfate or copper sulfate as Mordant,silk fabric dyeing using tea polyphenols(TP) was carried out.The sorption of TP on silk and its Mordant dyeing properties were investigated.The influence of pH value,immersion temperature and time,and quantities of Mordant and TP on dyeing behavior were discussed.The deeper color and good color fastness of dyed silk were obtained after Mordant dyeing with TP 5%(owf) at pH value 4.1 for dipping 60min.Dyed fabric had excellent UV properties of UPF 50 and deodorant function of removal ratio 80% and 90% for ammonia and methanol,respectively.
