The study was cross-sectional, descriptive and observational, including a total of 259 patients between 18 years old and over, who met with the inclusion and exclusion criteria; and who underwent oral examination, gather the data in a data collection file proposed for our study. It was found that the prevalence of normal variants of oral mucosa was 97.7% in total population, the most prevalent normal variant was Morsicatio Buccarum in 23.94% of the population, being more prevalent from 36 to 64 years old and in male gender. We conclude that normal variants of oral mucosa is of 97.7%, with a greater presence in the Morsicatio Buccarum, being more prevalent between age ranges from 36 to 64 years old and in the male gender.TesisEl presente trabajo de investigación tuvo como propósito determinar la prevalencia de variantes de la normalidad de la mucosa bucal en pacientes de 18 años a más atendidos en los hospitales Luis Albrecht, Regional Docente de Trujillo, en el año 2018. El estudio fue transversal, descriptivo y observacional se incluyó 259 pacientes entre 18 años a más, que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, a quienes se les realizo examen bucal y se reunió los datos en una ficha de recolección de datos propuesto para nuestro estudio. Se encontró que, la prevalencia de variantes de la normalidad de la mucosa bucal fue de 97.7% en la población total, la variante de la normalidad más prevalente fue Morsicatio Buccarum en 23,94% de la población, encontrándose más prevalente en la edad de 36 a 64 años y en el género masculino. Concluimos que, la prevalencia de variantes de la normalidad de la mucosa bucal es de 97.7%, con mayor presencia en el Morsicatio Buccarum, encontrándose más entre los rangos de edad de 36 a 64 años y en el género masculino

Oral mucosal lesions in teenagers: a cross-sectional study

The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) in a wide sample of adolescents. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out examining all medical records of adolescents (aged 13–18 years) treated at the Dental Clinic of the University of Brescia (Italy) in the period from 2008 to 2014. Cases with OMLs were selected. Data regarding age, gender, type of OML, bad habits, systemic chronic diseases were collected. Results A total of 6.374 medical records (mean age 15.2 + −1.7 years) were examined. We found 1544 cases (31.7%) of oral mucosal lesions; 36 different types of mucosal alterations were detected and the most frequent were: aphthous ulcers (18%), traumatic ulcerations (14.3%), herpes simplex virus (11%), geographic tongue (9.6%), candidiasis (5.5%), and Morsicatio Buccarum (4.7%). Papilloma virus lesions (1.7%), piercing-related lesions (4%), multiform erythema (0.13%), oral lichen planus (0.13%) and granular cell tumour (0.06%) were also diagnosed. Conclusions The prevalence of OMLs in adolescents are different from those in children and, in some conditions, it could increase with age.

According to the DSM–5, LCB is classified as a body-focused repetitive disorder, which in turn is a subcategory of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. We present a case report of a 52-year-old female (henceforth referred to as AO), who started LCB approximately 40 years ago. In search of a treatment, she downloaded a self-help technique, “decoupling”, from the internet that was initially developed for trichotillomania and nail biting; for these two disorders, decoupling had yielded significant improvement in two randomized controlled trials compared to control conditions. AO modified the technique to her LCB and was able to completely stop the behavior after two days. AO's score on the Skin Picking Scale-Revised, modified for LCB, dropped from 28 points (maximum score: 36) to 0 points. We recommend relabeling the disorder cavitadaxia; the terms lip/cheek biting and Morsicatio Buccarum are misleading as the disorder may also involve the tongue and Morsicatio Buccarum relates to the somatic consequences of biting rather than the underlying disorder.

Prevalence of oral mucosal disorders during pregnancy: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Methods Observational studies were selected by two reviewers in a two-phase process. Search strategies were applied at CINAHL, LILACS, LIVIVO, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, OpenGrey, and ProQuest. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data. Synthesis of results was calculated by the software R Statistics version 3.5.1 (The R Foundation, Vienna, Austria). Confidence in cumulative evidence was assessed by using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria. Results Fifteen studies met the eligibility criteria and were selected for qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis, of which 5935 participants were enrolled. The overall prevalence of oral mucosal disorders was 11.8%. Gingival hyperplasia (17.1%), Morsicatio Buccarum (10%), oral candidiasis (4.4%), pyogenic granuloma (3%), and benign migratory glossitis (2.8%) were the most prevalent lesions. The overall risk of bias was considered moderate, and the quality of evidence was very low. Conclusion Disorders of the oral mucosa were present in approximately 1 out of 10 pregnant women. Gingival hyperplasia was the most prevalent lesion. Further studies should apply homogeneous methodology to improve the quality of evidence.

Métodos: Foram selecionados estudos observacionais por dois revisores em um processo de duas fases. As estratégias de busca foram feitas realizadas nas bases de dados CINAHL, LILACS, LIVIVO, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science e três bases de literatura cinzenta Google Scholar, ProQuest e OpenGrey. O risco de viés foi avaliado com a ferramenta Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data. A análise da qualidade do nível de evidência foi feita com os critérios de Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). A síntese dos resultados foi realizada pelo software MedCalc 1.514.8.1 (MedCalc Software, Ostend, Belgium). Resultados: 15 artigos foram incluídos para a análise qualitativa e quantitativa, com 5935 envolvidos. A prevalência geral das lesões foi de 12,4%. Hiperplasia gengival (11.4%), Morsicatio Buccarum (10%), candidíase oral (4,7%) e granuloma piogênico (3,2%) foram as lesões mais prevalentes. O risco de viés de maneira geral foi moderado e a qualidade do nível de evidência foi considerada muito baixa. Conclusão: As lesões da mucosa oral estiveram presentes em 1 a cada 10 gestantes, aproximadamente. A hiperplasia gengival foi a lesão mais prevalente.
