    Abstract:

It is quite challenging to control both quality and productivity of products produced using injection molding process. Although many previous researchers have used different types of optimisation approaches to obtain the best configuration of parameters setting to control the quality of the molded Part, optimisation approaches in maximising the performance of cooling channels to enhance the process productivity by decreasing the mould cycle time remain lacking. In this study, optimisation approaches namely Response Surface Methodology (RSM), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Glowworm Swarm Optimisation (GSO) were employed on front panel housing Moulded using Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). Each optimisation method was analysed for both straight drilled and Milled Groove Square Shape (MGSS) conformal cooling channel moulds. Results from experimental works showed that, the performance of MGSS conformal cooling channels could be enhanced by employing the optimisation approach. Therefore, this research provides useful scientific knowledge and an alternative solution for the plastic injection moulding industry to improve the quality of Moulded Parts in terms of deformation using the proposed optimisation approaches in the used of conformal cooling channels mould.

    Abstract:

Today, there are various optimisation methods that have been explored by many researchers to find the appropriate processing parameters setting in injection moulding process. Based on previous researches, the application of optimisation work enhanced the Moulded Part quality. APart from the quality, the productivity also plays an important role in the injection moulding process. Thus, some researchers have introduced the application of conformal cooling channels which have been proven improved both quality and productivity of the Moulded Part. Nonetheless, most of the previous researches in optimisation work are only focusing on the conventional straight- drilled cooling channels and the application of optimisation work on conformal cooling channels are still lacking. Therefore in this study, the application of optimisation work to improve warpage of the front panel housing Part with straight-drilled and Milled Groove Square Shape (MGSS) conformal cooling channels has been presented. By performing Response Surface Methodology (RSM) optimisation approach, warpage of the Moulded Part has been optimised for both cooling channels. Based on the results warpage has optimised by 47.l% for straight-drilled cooling channels. While, for MGSS conformal cooling channels warpage has optimised by 46.5%. To control the quality, many researchers have introduced various of optimisation approaches which have been proven enhanced the quality of the Moulded Part produced. In order to improve the productivity of injection moulding process, some of researches have proposed the application of conformal cooling channels which have been proven reduced the duration of moulding cycle time. Therefore, this paper presents an application of alternative optimisation approach which is Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Glowworm Swarm Optimisation (GSO) on the Moulded Part with straight-drilled and conformal cooling channels mould. This study examined the warpage condition of the Moulded Parts before and after optimisation work applied for both cooling channe...

    Abstract:

Todays, many optimisation approaches have been explored by many researchers to find the appropriate processing parameters setting for the injection moulding process. From the previous researches, it was reported that the optimisation work has improved the Moulded Part quality. In this study, the application of optimisation work to improve warpage of the front panel housing have been explored. By selecting cooling time, coolant temperature, packing pressure and melt temperature as the variable parameters, design of experiment (DOE) have been constructed by using the rotatable central composite design (CCD) approach. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was performed to obtain the mathematical model. This mathematical model then will be used in Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimisation method as a fitness function to determine the appropriate processing parameters setting which will optimise the warpage condition. Based on the results, Coolant temperature give the most significant contribution to the warpage condit...
