El ciclismo de montaña y su incidencia en el fortalecimiento del turismo sostenible
2020Co-Authors: Guapi Guamán, Fausto Iván, Cherrez Bahamonde, Roberto Carlos, Vacas Manzano, Karol ValeshkaAbstract:The purpose of this study is to determine the incidence of Mountain Biking for the strengthening of sustainable tourism in the Loreto province of Orellana. For this, 89 participants who attended the SINCHI WAMI 2.0 competition were taken. The research methods and techniques that were used were bibliographic review, survey, observation and descriptive statistics. The main results on the practice of Mountain Biking are disclosed through the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable tourism obtained in the competition. It is concluded that the relationship between sustainable tourism and Mountain Biking is established on the basis of the favorable impact in all three dimensions, through the execution of touristic competitions, crossings and touring.

effects of Mountain Biking versus hiking on trails under different environmental conditions
Journal of Environmental Management, 2021Co-Authors: Marianne Evju, Dagmar Hagen, Mari Jokerud, Siri Lie Olsen, Sofie Kjendlie Selvaag, Odd Inge VistadAbstract:Recreational use of nature areas is increasing worldwide. All trail-based activities have a certain degradation effect on vegetation and soil, and conflicts between conservation values and recreation may occur. Controversy still exists regarding the relative impact of Mountain bikers compared to hikers on trails. In this study, we manipulated the use intensity from hikers and Mountain bikers on existing, natural-surfaced trails, and investigated effects of increased use and the relative importance of Mountain Biking on trail degradation. In two study sites, two trails were selected, one designated for hiking and one for Biking. Passes were counted with TRAFx counters. The proportion of Mountain bikers on the designated Biking trails was on average 47%, and on the hiking trails 13%. Trail width and depth were recorded at permanently marked transects repeatedly throughout the growing season, and analyzed with linear mixed models as a function of number of passes, proportion of bikers and environmental conditions along the trail. Trail width, both the core trail without vegetation and the total area influenced by trampling and Biking, showed on average small, but highly variable increases with enhanced use. Trail widening occurred particularly in moist parts, and trail width increased more when a larger proportion of the passes was Mountain bikers. Trail depth did not change much throughout the study period, suggesting that the soils along the trails were already compacted and to a limited degree prone to soil movement and subsequent soil loss. Our study shows that on-trail use by hikers and Mountain bikers have relatively limited overall effects in terms of trail widening and deepening, but that effects depend highly on environmental conditions; enhanced use of trails in wet areas is likely to result in greater trail degradation, and more so if a large proportion of the users are Mountain bikers. Management and maintenance of trails, in terms of re-routing or trail surface hardening, could thus be necessary to avoid negative impacts of increased use. For such management actions to be successful, they need to be targeted towards the actual user groups and the natural conditions in the area.

the effect of green exercise on state anxiety and the role of exercise duration intensity and greenness a quasi experimental study
Psychology of Sport and Exercise, 2010Co-Authors: Graham J Mackay, James T NeillAbstract:Abstract Objective The study aimed to explore the short-term effects of “green exercise” on state anxiety and to examine the influence of exercise type, intensity, duration, and degree of greenness. Method A quasi-experimental design involved eight pre-existing outdoor exercise groups (N = 101) who completed pre- and post-exercise questionnaires. Results Results indicated a significant reduction in participants' state anxiety following green exercise experiences (d = −0.47). However, there was a significant interaction between anxiety changes and the type of green exercise, with effect sizes for the groups ranging between 0.14 and 1.02. The largest anxiety reductions were reported by the Road Cycling, Boxercise, and Mountain Biking groups. Exercise intensity and duration did not impact on state-anxiety changes, however higher degrees of perceived environmental greenness were associated with larger reductions in anxiety. Conclusions Green exercise effected moderate short-term reductions in anxiety, with greater reductions evident for some exercise groups and for participants who perceived themselves to be exercising in more natural environments. These findings support claims for mental health benefits of green exercise but they also highlight the need to better understand individual and group differences and the role of perceived environmental “greenness”.
