Modeling Intention in Email - Modeling Intention in Email

In this thesis we present evidence that email management can be potentially improved by the effective use of machine learning techniques to model different aspects of user intention. We initially propose a taxonomy of user intentions in terms of Speech Acts applied to email communication, or “email acts”, and show that email act classification can be largely automated, potentially leading to better email prioritization and management. We then describe how machine learning can be used to reduce the chances of costly email addressing errors. One type of costly error is an “email leak”, i.e., mistakenly sending a message to an unintended recipient — a widespread problem that can severely harm individuals and corporations. Another type of addressing error is forgetting to add an intended collaborator as recipient, a likely source of costly misunderstandings and communication delays that can be potentially addressed with intelligent recipient recommendation. We propose several different approaches to address these problems, and show very positive experimental results in a large email collection. In addition, we describe a 4-week long user study based on the implementation of some of the proposed models in a popular email client (Mozilla Thunderbird). More than 15% of the human subjects reported that it prevented real email leaks, and more than 47% of them utilized recipient recommendations. Overall the study shows that recipient recommendation and email leak detection can be valuable additions to real email clients, with more than 80% of the subjects reporting that they would permanently use these models if a few interface/optimization changes were implemented. Finally, we introduce a new robust rank learning algorithm to further improve recipient recommendation predictions. The algorithm is essentially a non-convex optimization procedure over a sigmoidal loss function, in which any linear baseline ranking model can be used as starting point. This new learning method provides substantial rank performance improvements on recipient recommendation tasks, outperforming all previously introduced models, including well-known state-of-the-art ranking algorithms.

One type of costly mistake is an“email leak”, i.e., accidentally sending a message to an unintended recipient — a widespread problem that can severely harm individuals and corporations. Another type of addressing error is forgetting to add an intended collaborator as recipient, a likely source of costly misunderstandings and communication delays in large corporations. To address these problems, various data mining techniques have been proposed recently [3, 4]. In this paper we describe the deployment of some of these techniques in a popular email client ( Mozilla Thunderbird ), and report how users responded to such data mining techniques in their everyday lives. In spite of interface, privacy and speed constraints, results were fairly positive. More than 15% of the users reported that the client prevented real cases of email leaks, and more than 47% of them accepted recommendations provided by the data mining techniques. We then conclude by presenting a few lessons learned from this deployment, and discussing costs and benefits of making these techniques permanent additions to email clients.

Email Server appli- cation installation is done in the Linux operating system Ubuntu 10.10 by installing Ubuntu Linux operating system rst on the PC or Laptop. Then install the application Citadel is done through Terminal condition or laptop PC must be connected to the internet. Then do the cong- uration for the Webcit Admin. After that install Mozilla Thunderbird on the PC user to access user accounts. After all the conguration process is complete, the results of the Citadel as a Mail Server conguration has been successfully performed. Penginstallan aplikasi Email Server ini dilakukan dalam sistem operasi Linux Ubuntu 10.10 dengan cara menginstall sistem operasi Linux Ubuntu terlebih dahulu pada PC atau Laptop. Lalu menginstall aplikasi Citadel yang dilakukan melalui Terminal dengan syarat PC atau Laptop harus terhubung dengan internet. Kemudian melakukan konfigurasi untuk Admin pada Webcit. Setelah itu install Mozilla Thunderbird pada PC user untuk dapat mengakses akun pengguna. Setelah semua proses konfigurasi selesai, maka hasil dari konfigurasi Citadel sebagai Mail Server telah berhasil dilakukan. Kemudian user dapat mengakses email sesuai akunnya yang sebelunya telah di daftarkan pada Citadel dengan menggunakan Mozilla Thunderbird pada setiap sisi client.

From the Characteristics of Open Source Software Projects to Success

Organizations release software source code open and hope to attract volunteers to improve their applications, forming what we call an open source project. Examples of organizations that have used this strategy include IBM (Eclipse), Google (Android) and Mozilla (Thunderbird). This phenomenon deserves attention for its usefulness to public and private organizations on saving costs and improving software services to the population. This book theoretically specifies and empirically tests a structural-causal model to explain how projects are populated and operate, consequently, impacting the qualities of the software produced and support provided by the project members. Specific advices to managers engaged in such strategies are provided.

Open source software projects' attractiveness, activeness, and efficiency as a path to software quality: an empirical evaluation of their relationships and causes

Organizations release software source code open and hope to attract volunteers to improve their software, forming what we call an open source project. Examples of organizations that have used this strategy include IBM (Eclipse), SAP (Netweaver) and Mozilla (Thunderbird). Moreover, thousands of these projects have been created as a consequence of the growing amount of software source code released by individuals. This expressive phenomenon deserves attention for its sudden appearance, newness and possible usefulness to public and private organizations. To explain the dynamics of open source projects, this research theoretically identified and empirically analyzed a construct - attractiveness - found crucial to them due to its influence on how they are populated and operate, subsequently impacting the qualities of the software produced and of the support provided. Both attractiveness' causes and consequences were put under scrutiny, as well as its indicators. On the side of the consequences, it was theoretically proposed and empirically tested whether the attractiveness of these projects affects their levels of activeness, efficiency, likelihood of task completion, and time for task completion , though not linearly, as task complexity could moderate the relationships between them. Also, it was argued at the theoretical level that activeness, efficiency, likelihood of task completion, and time for task completion mediate the relationship between attractiveness and software/support quality. On the side of attractiveness' causes, it was proposed and tested that five open software projects' characteristics (license type, intended audience, type of project and project's life-cycle stage) impact attractiveness directly. Additionally, these projects' characteristics were argued to influence projects' levels of activeness, efficiency, likelihood of task completion, and time for task completion (and so an empirical evaluation of their associations was performed). The empirical tests of all these relationships between constructs were carried out using Structural Equation Modeling with Maximum Likelihood on three samples of over 4,600 projects each, collected from the largest repository of open source software, Sourceforge.net (a repeated cross-sectional approach). The results confirmed the importance of attractiveness, suggesting a direct influence on projects' dynamics, as opposed to the moderated-by- task complexity indirect paths first proposed. Furthermore, all four projects' characteristics studied were found to significantly influence projects' attractiveness, activeness, efficiency, likelihood of task completion, and time for task completion (with the exception of license type and time for task completion). Besides providing a statistical test of these propositions, this study discovered the direction of the influence of each project characteristic on projects' attractiveness, activeness, efficiency, likelihood of task completion and time for task completion . Lastly, conclusions, limitations, and future directions are discussed based on these findings.

VisArchive: a time and relevance based visual interface for searching, browsing, and exploring project archives

On construction projects in particular, the increasing amount of information and the increasing complexity of its structure make searching and exploring information in the project archive challenging and time-consuming. Methods This research investigates a query-driven approach that represents new forms of contextual information to help users understand the set of documents resulting from queries of construction project archives. Specifically, this research extends query-driven interface research by representing three types of contextual information: (1) the temporal context is represented in the form of a timeline to show when each document was created; (2) the search-relevance context shows exactly which of the entered keywords matched each document; and (3) the usage context shows which project participants have accessed or modified a file. Results We implemented and tested these ideas within a prototype query-driven interface we call VisArchive. VisArchive employs a combination of multi-scale and multi-dimensional timelines, color-coded stacked bar charts, additional supporting visual cues and filters to support searching and exploring historical project archives. The timeline-based interface integrates three interactive timelines as focus + context visualizations. Conclusions The feasibility of using these visual design principles is tested in two types of project archives: searching construction project archives of an educational building project and tracking of software defects in the Mozilla Thunderbird project. These case studies demonstrate the applicability, usefulness and generality of the design principles implemented.
