Viewpoints about several Mud Logging technology issues relating to drilling
2012Co-Authors: Cnpc BohaiAbstract:During drilling,Mud Logging should not only provide the drilling information of MWD to ensure its safe drilling,but also take some actions in geosteering of horizontal wells,drilling speed-up of deep wells,well control,unconventional reservoir drilling and other aspects to achieve the purpose to broaden the service market.Therefore,we need to further enhance the value of Mud Logging services,mine and refine the information from the existing Mud Logging information,the refined information can promote the development of drilling technology,thus forming a high level of Mud Logging technology service system,which is systematic,supporting,credible and effective.From the height of Mud Logging industry management,the authors investigated the misunderstanding within Mud Logging in aspects of geosteering,drilling speed-up for deep wells,well control and unconventional reservoirs,the room for improving Mud Logging services,and pointed out that Mud Logging industry in the future development direction,that is,Mud Logging creates a favorable external market,further expands the field of technical services,provides quality technical services for drilling,and reserves the drilling engineering prejudice against Mud Logging;Mud Logging improves strength from the internal,that is,Mud Logging makes efforts to innovation,perfects testing equipment and measurement which have significant effects on the development of drilling technology,thus playing a greater role in oil exploration.

The features of Mud Logging shows for the loose sandstone in shallow-middle zones in Qikou sag
2009Co-Authors: Cnpc BohaiAbstract:The shallow-middle zones in Qikou sag in Dagang Oilfield takes Minghuazhen and Guantao Groups of Gangdong area and Guantao Group of Gangxi area as the main target zones.For more than 40 years' exploration and development,the relationship between oil and gas has changed.In order to further enhance the recognition for the shallow-middle zones of the area,the authors summarized the distribution rule of the different horizons and reservoirs with different properties in Gangdong and Gangxi areas by the synthetic analysis of the corresponding features of Mud Logging parameters,such as cuttings,gas Logging and quantitative fluorescence.The authors considered that the existed oil and gas relationship of the shallow-middle zones was complex,areal law was not clear,and the parameters in oil and water zones of each fault block and zone group had obvious difference.Thus the Mud Logging data,such as gas Logging,geochemical,quantitative fluorescence etc.can be used as the basis for the interpretation and evaluation of the area.It is suggested that the relative discrimination standards should be set up for the different horizons in Gangdong and Gangxi areas.

Bottlenecking problems in Mud Logging services development and countermeasures
Natural Gas Industry, 2014Co-Authors: Cnpc ChuanqingAbstract:At present,traditional Logging services are being challenged by poor geological service capability,low economic aggregate,low profit and so on.To struggle out of such passive situation,we presented solutions in the following four aspects.First,to enrich the quantitative acquisition approaches to Logging data collection.Abandoning the simple ground data acquisition method,we put sensors down a hole and advanced them to the bit and around the wellbore to achieve Logging ground and downhole simultaneously.Second,to improve the automation and intelligentization degree of equipment.Through the development of integrated Logging,collection and interpretation software and intelligent warning,forecasting and remote monitoring systems,many wells can be monitored at only one monitoring port with unattended operation at each single well,thus to reduce the total work force.Third,to expand Logging interpretation methods.The dynamic design of a well's trajectory will be performed through measurement and Logging while drilling(MWD/LWD)data integrated with Mud Logging information and dynamic tracking,thus to really achieve geosteering in the end.Fourth,to strive for exploring two types of engineering technical services:single-well service and regional service.This will help create more opportunities for Mud Logging services.Numerous field practices demonstrate that the single-well service has been employed on a large scale especially in Sichuan and Chongqing gas fields,while the regional service has won good reputation in many overseas projects;as a result,not only the volume of Mud Logging services has increased,but the geological service capability,output value and profit have all been obviously improved.

Drilling Operations Monitoring in the Italian Offshore by means of Virtual “Black Boxes”

FerrariAbstract:The study analyzes the systems for the monitoring of drilling activities in the Italian offshore, also in light of the requirements contained in the transposition of the Directive 2013/30/EU, enforced following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico (2010). Today, the Italian law requires Operators to set up an information technology system that guarantees the integrity, availability and non-repudiation of the technical parameters of drilling and drilling fluid, while respecting the principles of confidentiality and responsibility of the data, under all conditions. In Italy, Virtual “Black Boxes” have been implemented, i.e., data management systems coupled to the Mud Logging Units of offshore rigs, which allow the quasi-real time transmission of a subset of drilling parameters, and their integral and safe storage on at least two separate servers hosted at the Operators’ facilities. Offshore Safety: Collection and Recording of Relevant Drilling Data in the Italian Offshore by Means of Virtual Black Boxes
2018Co-Authors: Macini Paolo, Mesini Ezio, Ferrari Marco, Pisconti Graziano, Antoncecchi Ilaria, Terlizzese FrancoAbstract:The paper illustrates systems and procedures recently adopted in Italy for the collection and recording of relevant drilling data, in the light of the requirements of Directive 2013/30/EU, elaborated and enforced following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Thanks to the increased environmental consciousness of institutions, industry and people, worldwide environmental policies more and more require a rigorous protection of the environment. The Directive 2013/30/EU on the safety of offshore oil and gas operations introduced strict requirements for the protection of both people and the environment, that are the targets which could be involved and seriously damaged by incidents occurring at offshore installations. Today, the Italian law requires Operators to set up an information and communication technology system that guarantees the integrity, availability and non-repudiation of drilling and drilling fluids parameters recorded in real time aboard drilling vessels and offshore platforms, while respecting the principles of confidentiality and responsibility of the data, under all conditions. Oil companies operating in the Italian offshore implemented hardware and software systems that can be described as “Virtual Black Boxes”. These are data management systems coupled to the Mud Logging Units of offshore drilling rigs, which allow the quasi-real time transmission of a subset of drilling parameters to a number of onshore data storage sites and their integral and safe recording on dedicated servers. The redundancy of information is ensured by managing multiple servers owned by the Operator and the Mud Logging Contractor. Normally, these servers are hosted at the Operators’ headquarters and at Contractors’ data storage centers. Data visualization is possible thanks to the use of special software, developed by Contractors and made available to Operators. Data acquisition, transmission and storage protocols are shared with the Italian competent Authority. These systems are already operative in the Italian offshore, even though studies are under way to enhance the intrinsic safety of the system and its possible implementation into a multi-criteria approach related to the overall safety performance of upstream operations. The aim of this novel tool is to grant the competent Authority a reliable access to drilling data for the due analysis in case of accident, also in the light of taking the necessary legal actions. Virtual Black Boxes are designed, implemented and managed in order to ensure data safety and data security, also to prevent manipulation of the records, in compliance with the requirements of Directive 2013/30/EU and its Italian transposition

Análisis e interpretación de los métodos cromatográficos aplicados en la detección de gases, durante la perforación de pozos de petróleo
'Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria', 2019Co-Authors: Chia Pulido, Carlos DavidAbstract:To the beginning the systems Mud Logging began to measure the gas that goes out of the wells during the perforation, as the indicative of the productivity of the perforated formations, nevertheless, due to the simultaneous development of measurement of the formations after perforating them by means of Logging for cable, one noticed that actually so many relation was not guarding the gas quantity measured up to the productivity of the reservoir, it is for it that the gas measurement in surface was relegated during decades and limited to the gas monitoring for the safety or as a way of qualitative reference. The aim of this project of thesis is, analyze the different chromatographic methods of interpretation to all the intervals in study, realizing a complete analysis it is possible to obtain a more exact real time vision of the fluids during the different phases of perforation, the byline for the study was validated and there were studied the most representative gases of formation belonging to the sands of the different crossed formations. The analysis and interpretation of the types of gases, which is going to be realized is in a well perforated in Huánuco department (basin Ucayali), to the southwest of Pucallpa department, in the block 131. 4 phases will be perforated considering a directional path. The zone of interest is in the formation Cushabatay. The existing literature will gather and check in the unit of Mud Logging. For it there were analyzed previous works, technical, manual publications, which will allow the acquisition of the previous knowledge that were helping in the development of the analysis of chromatography of the gases during the perforation. At the end of the project of thesis, the conclusions and recommendations were mentioned, in order that the different methods of chromatography of the gases generate good interpretations and they possess the ideal conditions of operability.TesisOriginalmente en la Industria del Petróleo los sistemas Mud Logging comenzaron a medir el gas que sale de los pozos durante la perforación, como un indicativo de la productividad de las formaciones perforadas, sin embargo, debido al desarrollo simultáneo de evaluación de las formaciones luego de perforarlas mediante registros por cable, se notó que en realidad no existía una buena correlación entre la cantidad de gas medida con la productividad del reservorio. Es por ello que la medición de gas en superficie estuvo relegada durante décadas y limitada al monitoreo de gases por aspectos de seguridad o como una manera de referencia cualitativa. El objetivo de este proyecto de tesis es analizar los distintos métodos cromatográficos de interpretación a todos los intervalos en estudio, con la finalidad de tener una representación más precisa en tiempo real, de los fluidos presentes en las distintas formaciones atravesadas en las fases de perforación, la data para el estudio fue validada y se estudiaran los gases de formación más representativos pertenecientes a las arenas de las diferentes formaciones atravesadas. Se presenta un caso de estudio con el monitoreo de los gases registrados en un pozo perforado en el bloque 131 de la Cuenca Ucayali, en el departamento de Ucayali. El pozo fue perforado en cuatro etapas considerando una trayectoria direccional. Se alcanzó la zona de interés en la formación Cushubatay. Se recolectó y revisó la literatura existente en la unidad de Mud Logging. Para ello se analizaron trabajos anteriores, publicaciones técnicas, manuales, lo cual permitió la adquisición de los conocimientos previos que ayudaron en el desarrollo del análisis de cromatografía de los gases durante la perforación. Al final del proyecto de tesis, se menciona las conclusiones y recomendaciones, para que los diferentes métodos de análisis de cromatografía de los gases que conduzcan a buenas interpretaciones y posean las condiciones óptimas de operatividad
