Quaternary International, 2019Co-Authors: Chun Chang Huang, Jiangli Pang, Yang Li, Yuda Cuan, Na WangAbstract:Abstract During our field investigations, a Holocene aeolian loess-soil profile containing three units of palaeo-Mudflow deposits is identified in Tianshui basin of the western Loess Plateau, China. Through field observation and the analysis of particle-size characteristics, three palaeo-Mudflow deposit layers are differentiated from the interbedding aeolian loess and soil, and they record three episodes of palaeo-Mudflow events. Based on stratigraphic correlation, OSL dates and archeological constraints, the three episodes of palaeo-Mudflow events are estimated to occur in 7000–6000, 5500–4800, and 4200-4000 yr BP, respectively. Comparison of the ages of the three paleo-Mudflow events with the paleoclimatic proxy data from different regions indicates that these three episodes of palaeo-Mudflow events were most likely associated with the climatic instabilities and prehistorical human activities. The results of our study, as well as the results of other studies, may provide further insights into the Holocene climate change and also into the prehistoric human activities in environmentally sensitive areas.

This paper introduces the feasibility study of Mudflow hazards by using Landsat-5TM data. The study has achieved a great success through adopting both the faint spectral enhancement technique for Mudflow fans (or other depositional areas) and comprehensive study of the environmental background of pregnant Mudflows. Thus, remote sensing as a fast, convenient, low-cost and effective technical method can be used to recognise the situation of Mudflow hazards so that effective rescue can be provided.

The Holocene, 2016Co-Authors: Chun Chang Huang, Jiangli Pang, Yali Zhou, Qiang Zhou, Guiming HuAbstract:Palaeo-earthquake event recorded by loess rapture fissures (N30°–40°W and N40°–50°E trending) and palaeo-Mudflow event recorded by red clay deposits were identified at the Machangyuan Ruins in the Huangshui River valley, at the foot of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Comparative analysis of grain-size distributions and geochemical elements of local outcrops indicates that the red Mudflows were sourced from the gullies on the valley side where unconsolidated Neogene red clay formation was exposed The palaeo-earthquake was associated with regional tectonic structures including a NNW-trending left-lateral strike-slip fault (Lajishan fault) and a NE-trending local fault (Bazhougou fault). Analysis combining optically stimulated luminescence ages and radiocarbon ages of archaeological record dates the palaeo-earthquake and palaeo-Mudflow events to ca. 4.80 ka BP. Using our CA prediction model, we present simulations of the LUSI hot Mudflow in the Sidoarjo disaster area. Our CA method to predict Mudflow is based on a fluid dynamic model, because hot Mudflow characteristics are similar to fluid. The CA model also takes into consideration landscape data, including features such as dikes and buildings. The Moore neighborhood model is adopted for CA to take into account the relationship between the cell of interest and the surrounding cells. A Gaussian interpolation is used to approximate the behavior of the hot Mudflow over landscape features. We evaluated the prediction accuracy of our CA model, by comparing results from the CA model with remote sensing satellite data from the disaster areas and measurements of the Mudflow disaster area. Simulation results of the LUSI hot Mudflow show relatively good prediction accuracy in comparison with conventional models. Therefore, we conclude that the CA model will be valuable for predictions pertaining to hot Mudflow in future disasters of a similar nature.

Monte Carlo Simulation of Micro Traffic with Unpredictable Disturbance

We concern to the main artery road very close to high dike of disaster. This road is main traffic connection with surrounding areas of disaster and traffic density over there is very high.The mud volcano remains with a high flow rates. The important matter when the mud containment walls broken and the Mudflows on the road is how does the vehicle can be evacuated from the disaster occurred areas through suffered roads. This study presents evacuation simulation of vehicles in surrounding affected road using agent-based modeling. We observe the time required for evacuation and the number of victim toward the traffic condition (probability of vehicle density) and the driving behavior (probability of lane changing). Both of them are evaluated and compared each other with/without agent.

Modeling and Simulation of Hot Mudflow Movement Prediction Using Cellular Automata

We assume that Mudflow has similar characteristic with fluid dynamic model. Therefore we adopt dynamical model of fluid to build hot Mudflow movement model. The general parameters of this model are landscape data, mud volume per-day, and obstacle such as dikes and buildings. In this research we use approximation model using cellular automata to create a novel model for Mudflow movement that is simple and powerful model to simulate dynamical model of fluid flow. The important properties in our model as cellular automata model are neighbor definition and rules. We use 8 neighbor cells and moment with Gaussian function. Cellular automata rules are built with landscape data and obstacle data. The simulation result is visualization of Mudflow movement as fluid movement that depends on dynamical model characteristics.
