towards a sustainable coffee market paradoxes faced by a Multinational Company
Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, 2012Co-Authors: Ans KolkAbstract:This paper examines the case of sustainable coffee as faced by Sara Lee's International Coffee and Tea Division (SL), asking which strategic direction the Company should take considering its regulatory, competitive, and societal contexts. More than a decade after sustainable coffee became a strategic issue for SL, emerging public purchasing guidelines seem to exclude the ‘mainstream-market’ policy of the Company and instead favour the Fairtrade standard that embodies a niche approach. The case presents the strategic, organisational, and marketing dimensions, in their international supply-chain and industry dynamics. It raises the question what it means for a large, mainstream, Multinational Company to move to sustainability when the issues at hand are very complex, when consumer awareness is limited, and when the market for sustainable coffee is not yet mature. Several strategic options are presented, each with their pros and cons, as input for further discussion and research on the paradoxes related to sustainability and international business.

THE IMPACT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON PRODUCT MARKETING : A CASE STUDY OF A Multinational Company IN NIGERIA
Technovation, 1999Co-Authors: J.o Adetayo, S.a Sanni, M.o IloriAbstract:Abstract This study evaluated the impact of information technology (IT) on the marketing of a product of a Multinational Company in Nigeria by interviewing the brand manager and three marketing officers of the product. A questionnaire was also administered to 60 randomly selected literate retailers, wholesalers and consumers of the product, both in Lagos and Ibadan, to assess the impact of IT on some marketing variables. The results showed that there were savings in time and a reduction in error rate resulting from the use of electronic spreadsheets, decision support systems and computer-graphic aids. An unanticipated effect of the better understanding of sales trends and distribution planning resulted from the use of electronic spreadsheets and decision support systems, respectively. Sales were boosted as a result of optimization of activities. Labour resource savings were also achieved through the use of computer graphics. The use of e-mail increased the amount of data available for use. The impact of radio, television and telephone was also significant on some marketing variables such as product popularity, promotion/advertisement, distribution and sales. However, improper planning of jobs could lead to time-wasting with electronic spreadsheets and decision support systems.

enforcing information security policies through cultural boundaries a Multinational Company approach
European Conference on Information Systems, 2011Co-Authors: Ali Alper YaylaAbstract:Information security policies can be considered as guidelines and used as a starting point to create a security structure within an organization. Although practitioners continuously emphasize the importance of such policies, information system scholars have not paid the required attention to this context from the cross-cultural perspective. The purpose of this study is to look at the cultural and institutional differences of a Multinational Company (MNC) and its subsidiaries, and discuss how these differences affect the MNC’s strategy to enforce corporate information security policies to its subsidiaries in different cultural settings. The proposed framework considers the effects of the cultural distance, national economy, institutional distance, and stickiness of the knowledge transfer on the process of enforcing information security policies from the parent Company to its subsidiaries.

a production distribution and investment model for a Multinational Company
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management, 2004Co-Authors: Zubair M Mohamed, Mohamed YoussefAbstract:Considerable research literature exists on production planning, distribution, and investment models. In most cases they have been treated independently in an environment of low inflation rates. Unfortunately, work extending these problems to Multinational companies is sparse. This paper develops an integrated production planning, distribution, and investment model for a Multinational firm that produces products in different countries and distributes them to geographically diverse markets. Since Multinational corporations operate in different countries under varying exchange and inflation rates, varying opportunities for investing, and differing regulations, these factors should be included in the decision process. In the modeling, the paper incorporates these factors and elicits the performance of the model through an example and discusses the results. The results indicate that the exchange rates and initial capacity levels of the firms have significant effects on the production, distribution, and investment decisions, and consequently, on the profit.
