IM2PR: interference-minimized Multipath Routing protocol for wireless sensor networks
Wireless Networks, 2014Co-Authors: Marjan Radi, Behnam Dezfouli, Kamalrulnizam Abu Bakar, Shukor Abd Razak, Tan Hwee-pinkAbstract:With respect to the inherent advantages of Multipath Routing, nowadays Multipath Routing is known as an efficient mechanism to provide even network resource utilization and efficient data transmission in different networks. In this context, several Multipath Routing protocols have been developed over the past years. However, due to the time-varying characteristics of low-power wireless communications and broadcast nature of radio channel, performance benefits of traffic distribution over multiple paths in wireless sensor networks are less obvious. Motivated by the drawbacks of the existing Multipath Routing protocols, this paper presents an Interference-Minimized Multipath Routing protocol (IM2PR) which aims to discover a sufficient number of minimum interfering paths with high data transmission quality between each event area and sink node in order to provide efficient event data packet forwarding in event-driven wireless sensor networks. Extensive performance evaluations show that IM2PR presents improvements over the Micro Sensor Multipath Routing Protocol and Energy-Efficient data Routing Protocol as follows: 50 and 70 % in term of packet reception ratio at the sink, 44 and 80 % in term of goodput, 33 and 40 % in term of packet delivery latency, 40 and 57 % in term of energy consumption, 50 and 60 % in term of packet delivery overhead.

Multipath Routing in wireless sensor networks survey and research challenges
Sensors, 2012Co-Authors: Marjan Radi, Behnam Dezfouli, Kamalrulnizam Abu BakarAbstract:A wireless sensor network is a large collection of sensor nodes with limited power supply and constrained computational capability. Due to the restricted communication range and high density of sensor nodes, packet forwarding in sensor networks is usually performed through multi-hop data transmission. Therefore, Routing in wireless sensor networks has been considered an important field of research over the past decade. Nowadays, Multipath Routing approach is widely used in wireless sensor networks to improve network performance through efficient utilization of available network resources. Accordingly, the main aim of this survey is to present the concept of the Multipath Routing approach and its fundamental challenges, as well as the basic motivations for utilizing this technique in wireless sensor networks. In addition, we present a comprehensive taxonomy on the existing Multipath Routing protocols, which are especially designed for wireless sensor networks. We highlight the primary motivation behind the development of each protocol category and explain the operation of different protocols in detail, with emphasis on their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, this paper compares and summarizes the state-of-the-art Multipath Routing techniques from the network application point of view. Finally, we identify open issues for further research in the development of Multipath Routing protocols for wireless sensor networks.

review survey of Multipath Routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks
Journal of Network and Computer Applications, 2009Co-Authors: Mohammed Tarique, Kemal E Tepe, Sasan AdibiAbstract:This survey investigates Multipath Routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The main objectives of Multipath Routing protocols are to provide reliable communication and to ensure load balancing as well as to improve quality of service (QoS) of MANETs. These Multipath protocols are broadly classified into five categories based on their major goals. The goals are to improve delay, provide reliability, reduce overhead, maximize network life and support hybrid Routing. Multipath Routing protocols address issues such as multiple paths discovery and maintaining these paths. Issues, objectives, performances, advantages and disadvantages of these protocols are investigated and summarized. A checklist is provided as a guideline so that a network designer can choose an appropriate Multipath Routing protocol to meet the network's application objectives.

Survey of secure Multipath Routing protocols for WSNs
Journal of Network and Computer Applications, 2015Co-Authors: Shazana Md Zin, Nor Badrul Anuar, Laiha Mat Kiah, Ismail AhmedyAbstract:Abstract In sensing data to the base station, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) face some security challenges since such networks impose resource constraints that need to be addressed by the Routing mechanism. This paper surveys, explores, and informs researchers regarding the landscape of Multipath Routing by providing the motivation behind Multipath Routing deployment. Subsequently, this paper analyzes the security requirements and common attacks in wireless sensor networks. Also, we provide a classification of secure Multipath Routing protocols on the basis of nature of defense against the WSN attacks. According to the classification, we investigate the existing secure Multipath Routing protocols within the WSN domain by discussing their strengths and limitations. A comparative study of the suggested classification is presented based upon the Multipath technique, additional security infrastructure, security requirements, corresponding attacks, and efficiency analysis in pursuit of effective secure Routing in wireless sensor networks.
