However, SNH differs from its predecessors in an important respect. For the first time in UK history, an agency has been given a mandate which includes the promotion of sustainable development. The purpose of this article is to assess the extent to which SNH is in a position to secure sustainable development in the day-to-day exercise of its functions.

It allowed an interim review to be made of the Life+ Cap DOM programme, involved the local partners, and created some useful exchanges between the programme coordinators from Martinique, La Reunion and mainland France. The indoor sessions alternated with outdoor visits to see some of the operations of the programme in action out in the field. (...)

Impact Assessment and Protection of Outstanding Landscape Integrity in a Natural Heritage Site: Fairy Valley, Kanas Nature Reserve, Xinjiang, China
Journal of Mountain Science, 2011Co-Authors: Zhaoping Yang, Feng DiAbstract:The essential purpose of the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage is to protect the integrity of Heritage values. Outstanding landscape is the core embodiment of the aesthetic value of a Natural Heritage site. This paper proposes a new assessment method from the point of view of the protection of Heritage values. It is used to measure the degree of outstanding landscape integrity under the human and Natural impact in Natural Heritage sites. This paper employ three indices, a visual index of outstanding landscape, a harmony index of the artificial landscape and a disturbance index of damaged landscape, to measure the impact of landscape integrity. The impact assessment model is based on a weighted combination of the three indices. The study site is the Fairy Valley, Kanas Nature Reserve, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China. The information employed is derived from field investigation and a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). A comprehensive evaluation of the Fairy valley was undertaken and it was determined that the outstanding landscape values are being compromised. Three protection methods are proposed to reduce the adverse effects and maintain landscape quality, thereby providing site managers with suggestions for the protection of Natural Heritage values. More broadly, the paper contributes novel methods of landscape assessment applicable to Natural protected areas.

Tourist Environment Protection Mode of the Kanas Natural Heritage, Xinjiang, China

Based on the tourist environment evaluation and tourist ecological design, and the circulation mode of tourist environment protection was put forward so as to improve the tourist and environment protection was coordinated development in the Natural Heritage site.

Border Demarcation of Nominated Site for World Natural Heritage Based on RS and GIS Technology: A Case Study for Kanas
2010 International Conference on Multimedia Technology, 2010Co-Authors: Xin-yu Liu, Zhaoping YangAbstract:Border demarcation of nominated site for world Natural Heritage plays an important role in the application for world Natural Heritage. This work provides precondition for the application program and establishes scientific foundation for the future management and development of the world Natural Heritage. Based on theoretical analysis, this paper discusses how to apply RS and GIS technology in border demarcation of nominated site for world Natural Heritage. Influence factors, such as integrality of core values, human activities, boundaries of existing protected area and regionalism et al., are synthetically analyzed in advance. Based on the remote sensing image and topographic map of Kanas, RS and GIS technology is applied to identify the boundaries of the core area and buffer area. The results accord with the criterion of Guidelines for World Heritage. The core area guarantees the integrality of the outstanding universal values of the nominated site, and excludes human activities such as large-scale tourism that may threaten the outstanding universal values. The buffer area includes the traditional social economic activities, local communities and appropriate tourism, provides protective layers from the east, south and west and guarantees the integrality of visual range of the nominated site.
