Effect of integrated nutrient management on flower quality and physiological parameters of Nerium (Nerium oleander L.)

One year old pruned plants of three Nerium cultivars (Red, White and Pink) were planted at a spacing of 3×1m accomodating five plants per plot. Among the parameters studied, under ambient condition, treatment T6 (NPK @ 90:120:120 g/plant/year + Farm Yard Manure + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria) marked the longest shelf life (4 days) and under cold storage condition, the treatment T8 (NPK @ 90:120:120 g/plant/year + Vermicompost + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria) and T10 (NPK @ 85:85:85 g/plant/year) had the longest shelf life of 6.9 days. Among all the nutrients, organic manures and their combinations, treatments T7 i.e., NPK 120:160:160 g plant-1 year-1 along with farmyard manure and biofertilizers exhibited better performance with respect to physiological characters viz., leaf area (38.03 cm2), total chlorophyll content (5.560 mg g-1), chlorophyll “a” content (2.864 mg g-1) and chlorophyll “b” content (1.599 mg g-1) and total soluble protein content (132.69 mg g-1) while the highest relative water content of 50.68 mg was recorded in treatment of NPK @ 150:200:200 g/plant/year (T3). Hence the results by the application of inorganic fertilizers combined with organic manures and biofertilizers proved to be a better option for enhancing the flower quality and physiological characters in one year old pruned plants of Nerium (Nerium oleander L.) as compared to the application of inorganic fertilizers alone.

The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with ten treatments and three replications. One year old pruned plants of three Nerium cultivars (Red, White and Pink) were planted at a spacing of 3 x 1 m accommodating five plants per plot. The results revealed that integrated management approach showed significant differences for growth and floral attributes of the plant. Among all the nutrients, organic manures and their combination treatment NPK 120:160:160 g/plant/year along with farmyard manure and biofertilizers exhibited better performance in respect of growth and floral characters viz plant height (152.39 cm), number of primary and secondary branches (6.05 and 14.22 respectively), minimum days taken to flowering from pruning (56.33), increased number of flowers per inflorescence (114.78) and number of inflorescence per plant (25.22), highest length of inflorescence (23.34 cm), single flower weight (0.277 g) and 100-flower weight (26.17 g). Hence the application of inorganic fertilizers combined with organic manures and biofertilizers proved to be a better option for enhancing the growth and flowering characters in one year old pruned plants of Nerium as compared to the application of inorganic fertilizers alone.

Micropropagation of Nerium Oleander through the Immature Pods

KarrunakaranAbstract:Oleander (Nerium oleander L.) is a vegetatively propagated ornamental plant valued for its evergreen foliage and showy terminal flower clusters that are available in different colours. Oleander is cultivated recently as a flowering pot plant and therefore abundant propagation plant material for commercial use is of great importance. This species also produces secondary metabolites (Paper & Franz 1989), some of which are of pharmacological interest. In vitro culture of plants has gained importance during recent years because, besides other application, this technique can be used for the rapid multiplication of some plants (Tisserat 1987). As far as we are aware, there are no published reports about micropropagation of Nerium oleander and the aim of the present work was to determine the culture conditions for micropropagation of this plant. To induce callus formation from pods of Nerium oleander,and study the in vitro growth conditions of calli. Study the specific growth factor for root and shoot induction, and transplantation and acclimatization of explants and isolation of the DNA from explants. Standardization of micropropagation protocol of Nerium oleander. In the case of Nerium oleander, the micropropagation technique from pods were established. We also raised plantlets from the callus and also subjected the DNA for analysis and done RAPD to find the difference between the normal and in vitro plants, the result is no difference-this shows that the plants are identical. Standardization of surface sterilization protocol, aseptic culture initiation,establishment and multiplication, suitable media for rooting and a suitable protocol for hardening in order to achieve quality transplant.Optimizitation of medium for callus induction, maintenance and regeneration.
