    Abstract:

    Abstract A study of the Nesting Behavior of Miscophus (Nitelopterus) laticeps was undertaken at Montana de Oro State Park, San Luis Obispo County, California in 2010, 2011, and 2012 to clarify variation in previous reports on this species. Specific areas of study included (1) manner of prey transport, (2) presence or absence of temporary entrance closure, (3) manner of nest entry, (4) families of prey spiders, and (5) wasp's egg affixation site. New prey records, including two new families, were discovered as part of this study. The Behavioral components of M. laticeps are discussed in relation to other North American congeners.

    Abstract:

    The Nesting Behaviors of 10 females of Tachysphex inconspicuus (Kirby) (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) were studied on a sandy, mowed lawn at the La Selva Biological Station in northeastern Costa Rica on 27–29 April 1980. Twenty-four completed nests were observed, excavated, and measured. The nests had oblique, short burrows leading to one or two shallow cells. Prey cockroaches belonging to 11 species of Chorisoneura and Riatia fulgida (Saussure) (Blattaria: Blattellidae), all tropical wet forest canopy indicator species, were removed from the cells, weighed, and identified. The cockroaches consisted mainly of adult females, selectively preyed upon over adult males and nymphs due to their larger sizes. The aggregate prey mass in cells was separable into prospective larger (heavier) female and smaller (lighter) male cells. Wasps usually oviposited on the heaviest cockroach in a cell, in most cases an adult female. Atypical genus Behavior included (1) prey being carried to one side of the wasp and perhaps grasped by a hindleg during removal of the temporary entrance closure and nest entry and (2) wasp's egg being laid affixed to a forecoxal corium and extending backward in a longitudinally posteriad position across the prey's ventral thorax. A comparison with the Nesting Behavior of other species in the Tachysphex obscuripennis species group is made.

    Abstract This study presents prey records and Nesting information for 13 species of spider wasps: Hemipepsis ustulata, Priocnessus nebulosus, and Priocnemis cornica (Tribe Pepsini); Auplopus architectus, A. caerulescens (Tribe Auplopodini); and Tachypompilus ferrugineus, T. unicolor, Anoplius (Pompilinus) marginatus complex, A. (P) splendens, A. (Anoplius) nigerrimus, A. (A.) virginiensis, Arachnospila arctus, and A. scelestus (Tribe Pompilini). Cumulative prey records for Priocnessus nebulosus, Tachypompilus ferrugineus, T. unicolor, and Arachnospila scelestus indicate limited prey selection. Cursorial hunting spiders were more susceptible to predation by the spider wasps than web-spinning spiders. Wasp Nesting sites varied among natural and man-made microhabitats.

    Olive ridley sea turtles display two different types of Nesting Behavior: in arribada (synchronous mass Nesting) or solitarily. Contrarily to arribadas, little has been published about solitary nesters. This study aimed to expand the knowledge on interNesting interval and site fidelity of solitary Nesting olive ridleys and to test a possible development of arribada Nesting Behavior. Data were collected in Sergipe (Brazil) over 125 km of beach from 10°30′S/36o23′W to 11°26′S/37o19′W, between Nesting seasons 2004/2005 and 2006/2007. From 962 tagged females, 173 were seen reNesting. The average interNesting interval found was longer (22.35 ± 7.01 days) than previously described, which might relate to lower water temperatures during the interNesting period. Olive ridleys at Sergipe showed high Nesting site fidelity, with consecutive Nesting events occurring in close proximity, non-randomly and dependently of previous events. Most of the consecutive nests were separated by 4.06–5.59 km. Development of arribada Nesting Behavior was not confirmed.

    Abstract:

    The introduction of artificial light into wildlife habitats is a rapidly expanding aspect of global change, which has many negative impacts on a wide range of taxa. In this experimental study, which took place on a beach located on the island of Boa Vista (Cabo Verde), three types of artificial light were tested on Nesting loggerhead sea turtles as well as on ghost crabs, which intensively predate on nests and hatchlings, to determine the effects they would produce on the Behavior of both species. Over the course of 36days, female loggerheads and ghost crabs were studied under yellow, orange and red lights, with observations also being made on dark nights that served as a control treatment. During this period, the frequencies of Nesting attempts, the time taken by turtles to complete each phase of the Nesting process, and ghost crab abundance and Behaviors were carefully recorded. 1146 loggerhead Nesting attempts were observed and recorded during the experiments, and results showed a decrease in Nesting attempts of at least 20% when artificial lighting was present. A significant decline in successful attempts was also observed within the central sections of the beach, which corresponded to those that received more light. This artificial lighting significantly increased the time that turtles spent on the Nesting process and forced them to do more extensive beach crawls. Despite this, the presence of light had no apparent effect on the final selection of the Nesting site. Yellow and orange lights significantly disrupted the sea finding Behavior and turtles were often unable to orient themselves seaward under these color lights. Disoriented turtles were observed crawling in circuitous paths in front of the light source for several minutes. In addition, artificial lights had the potential to increase the number of ghost crabs present within the illuminated stretches of the beach. However, only yellow lighting produced a significant change on aggressive and prey searching Behaviors. These changes in abundance and Behavior could cause a greater predation on loggerhead turtle nests. Red light had no significant impact on the Behavior of either species. It should be a priority to enforce preventive measures and light mitigation strategies to ensure the conservation of important loggerhead rookeries.

    Theory predicts prey should flee to safety when the fitness benefits of flight meet or exceed the costs. Empirical work has shown the importance of predation risk (e.g., predator Behavior, distance to refuge) to prey flight Behavior. However, less is known about the influence of flight costs. We monitored Nesting painted turtles (Chrysemys picta (Schneider, 1783)) to examine their response to a human observer (potential predator) depending on the distance between a turtle and an observer, distance between a turtle and water (i.e., refuge), and Nesting stage at the time of the encounter (i.e., searching for a nest-site vs. constructing a nest). We found no evidence that the distance to an observer influenced flight decisions. However, turtles were less likely to flee as the distance to water increased, and turtles already constructing nests were more likely to continue Nesting than those still searching for nest-sites.     Abstract Theory predicts that in long‐lived organisms females should invest less energy in reproduction and more in growth and self‐maintenance early in life, with this balance shifting as females age and the relative value of each reproductive event increases. We investigated this potential trade‐off by characterizing within‐population variation in resource allocation to eggs by female painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and relating this variation to their Nesting ecology and life history. We examined lipid and protein allocation to yolks, accounting for both relative female age and seasonal effects (first vs. second clutches within a female). Older females appear to increase their investment in reproduction by producing larger eggs, but these eggs are not disproportionately more lipid or protein rich than the smaller eggs from younger females.
