    Abstract:

    The end-node, comprising host computer and Network Adaptor, presents one of the key obstacles to true gigabit Networking, defined as the ability to deliver a gigabit per second of data to an application. Drawing on the experience of the AURORA gigabit testbed and the OSIRIS Network Adaptor, this paper focuses on the performance problems created or exacerbated by the architecture of the host computer. We find that workstation architecture is often hostile to the achievement of high Networking performance, and propose some approaches to making workstation architecture more 'Network friendly'. In addition, since benchmarks are one of the criteria that drive worstation architecture, we propose some ways to create benchmarks that will take Networking performance, an increasingly important aspect of host performance, into account.

    Abstract:

    This paper describes our experiences, from a software perspective, with the OSIRIS Network Adaptor. It first identifies the problems we encountered while programming OSIRIS and optimizing Network performance, and outlines how we either addressed them in the software, or had to modify the hardware. It then describes the opportunities provided by OSIRIS that we were able to exploit in the host operating system (OS); opportunities that suggested techniques for making the OS more effective in delivering Network data to application programs. The most novel of these techniques, called application device channels , gives application programs running in user space direct access to the Adaptor. The paper concludes with the lessons drawn from this work, which we believe will benefit the designers of future Network Adaptors.

  • HPDC - CNI: a high-performance Network interface for workstation clusters

    Abstract:

    Networks of workstations provide an economic solution for scalable computing because they do not require specialized components. Even though recent advances have shown that it is possible to obtain high bandwidth between applications, interconnect latency remains a serious concern. We present CNI, a cluster Network interface that not only provides both low latency and high bandwidth but also efficiently supports multiple programming paradigms. This is done by functionally coupling the Network Adaptor board more closely to the CPU without changing the standard workstation architecture. CNI results in performance gains for applications, substantially reducing communication overhead and delay.

  • Economic impact of off-line PC viewer for private folder management

    We developed a PC-based clinical workstation and implemented at Asan Medical Center in Seoul, Korea, Hardwares used were Pentium-II, 8M video memory, 64-128 MB RAM, 19 inch color monitor, and 10/100Mbps Network Adaptor. One of the unique features of this workstation is management tool for folders reside both in PACS short-term storage unit and local hard disk. Users can copy the entire study or part of the study to local hard disk, removable storages, or CD recorder. Even the images in private folders in PACS short-term storage can be copied to local storage devices. All images are saved as DICOM 3.0 file format with 2:1 lossless compression. We compared the prices of copy films and storage medias considering the possible savings of expensive PACS short- term storage and Network traffic. Price savings of copy film is most remarkable in MR exam. Price savings arising from minimal use of short-term unit was 50,000 dollars. It as hard to calculate the price savings arising from the Network usage.
