    Abstract:

    The key notion in service-oriented architecture is decoupling clients and providers of a service based on an abstract service description, which is used by the service broker to point clients to a suitable service implementation. A client then send service requests directly to the service implementation. A problem with the current architecture is that it does not provide means for clients to specify, service brokers to verify, and service implementations to prove that certain desired non-functional properties are satisfied during service request processing. An example of such Nonfunctional Property is access and persistence restrictions on the data received as part of the service requests. In this work, we describe an extension of the service-oriented architecture that provides these facilities. We also discuss a preliminary implementation of this architecture and report preliminary results that demonstrate the potential practical value of the proposed architecture in real-world software applications.     Abstract:

    In addition to providing a semipermeable barrier that protects a cell from harmful stimuli, lipid membranes occupy a central role in hosting a variety of biological processes, including cellular communications and membrane protein functions. Most importantly, protein-membrane interactions are implicated in a variety of diseases and therefore many analytical techniques were developed to study the basis of these interactions and their influence on the molecular architecture of the cell membrane. In this study, sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy is used to investigate the spontaneous membrane insertion process of cytochrome b5 and its mutants. Experimental results show a significant difference in the membrane insertion and orientation properties of these proteins, which can be correlated with their functional differences. In particular, our results correlate the Nonfunctional Property of a mutant cytochrome b5 with its inability to insert into the lipid bilayer. The approach reported in this study could be used as a potential rapid screening tool in measuring the topology of membrane proteins as well as interactions of biomolecules with lipid bilayers in situ

    Abstract:

    Modeling and evaluating Nonfunctional properties such as performance, power, and reliability of embedded systems are tasks of utmost importance. In this article, we introduceMAESTRO, amethodology for themodeling and evaluation of Nonfunctional properties and embedded firmware of MPSoC architecture components at the Electronic System Level (ESL). In contrast to existing design flows that provide predefined performance models, MAESTRO defines a flexible approach that allows to define virtual prototypes that can be easily customized and extended to evaluate multiple Nonfunctional properties of interest at different levels of abstraction. In MAESTRO, a design is composed purely from actor-oriented models. This enables typical ESL features such as automatic design space exploration and synthesizability of HW and SW components, typically missing in very general design flows. Unique to MAESTRO is the separation and coordination of the interaction between application functionality, firmware, and performance models for the evaluation of Nonfunctional properties, and their complex interactions within a single Model-of-Computation (MoC). The main advantages of MAESTRO are: (I) Extensible modeling of interdependent Nonfunctional properties of heterogeneous MPSoC components; (II) high flexibility to investigate the appropriate trade-off between modeling effort and accuracy of Nonfunctional Property evaluators; (III) a holistic approach for modeling application functionality as well as firmware affecting the evaluation of Nonfunctional properties.
