  • Sarbanes-Oxley IT Compliance Using COBIT and Open Source Tools - Chapter 4 - Why Open Source?
Sarbanes-Oxley IT Compliance Using COBIT and Open Source Tools, 2020
Co-Authors: Christian B. Lahti, Roderick Peterson
    Abstract:

The chapter discusses the open source software, its developmental methodology, and some of the benefits that can be realized by its adoption in an organization. It examines the use of open source in environment and explains that there are many opportunities for the use of OSS software. There are two ways by which open source software fits into the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance equation: as elements of one's IT infrastructure and as support systems, such as document control, system monitoring, workflow, and approval management. The chapter introduces the sample companies that are used as case studies to illustrate concrete examples of open source software deployment. The sample companies demonstrate two different architectures: BuiltRight Construction, which is a small public company with an infrastructure based entirely on Microsoft Windows and other closed source technologies, and Nustuff Electronics, which is a medium-sized global organization with a mixed platform environment.
