Development of a standardized Occupational Therapy screening tool for visual perception in adults.

Occupational therapists need to identify the nature of visual perceptual performance impairments in order to choose rehabilitation intervention strategies appropriate for remediation of specific problems or to compensate for limitations in daily function. This paper describes the variations in visual perception terminology and Occupational Therapy approaches to visual perceptual Assessment. Limitations of existing Assessment tools for visual perception are highlighted in terms of reliability, validity, normative information, length of time to administer, and comprehensiveness in screening for visual perceptual impairment. In response to these limitations, a battery of items, called the Occupational Therapy Adult Perceptual Screening Test (OT-APST) was selected to screen adults comprehensively for impairments of agnosia, visuospatial skills including body scheme and neglect, constructional skills, apraxia, and acalculia. It also includes a subtest to evaluate functional skills directly observed during screening. This new battery has established reliability, validity and age-stratified normative data for adults 16 to 97 years of age. The OT-APST is recommended for use in conjunction with observational Assessment of activities of daily living for clients with stroke and acquired brain injury.

Síntese: A Avaliação Terapêutica Ocupacional para Adolescentes e Adultos com Deficiência Visual aproxima o profissional, através da entrevista semiestruturada e observação direta das ocupações, relações interpessoais, contextos e ambientes, dificuldades, interesses, expectativas, capacidades, dentre outros aspectos fundamentais para o rastreio das demandas terapêuticas ocupacionais, empregando uma linguagem única, por meio da utilização da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde. Conclusão: A avaliação apresentada padroniza a avaliação terapêutica ocupacional em deficiência visual e faz uso de uma linguagem universal, facilitando o diálogo entre terapeutas ocupacionais e entre estes e outros profissionais, oportuniza e viabiliza a avaliação, a reavaliação e a análise das intervenções.Palavras-Chave: Terapia Ocupacional. Synthesis: The Occupational Therapy Assessment for Adolescents and Adults with Visual Impairment offers the opportunity to approach, through semi-structured interview and direct observation, the occupations, interpersonal relationships, contexts and environments, difficulties, interests, expectations, capacities, among other fundamental aspects for the screening of Occupational demands, employing a uniform language, through the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Conclusion: The evaluation presented standardizes the Occupational therapeutic evaluation in visual impairment and makes use of a universal language, facilitating the dialogue between Occupational therapists and between these and other professionals, providing opportunities and enabling the evaluation, reevaluation and analysis of interventions.Keywords: Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapy Assessment tools in treatment of clients with depression
A. Smole, 2021Co-Authors: Smole AndrejAbstract:Uvod: V zadnjih letih depresija postaja vse pogostejša bolezen v razvitem svetu, ki lahko prizadene vsakogar izmed nas. Zaradi njene pogostosti in simptomov predstavlja čedalje večjo težavo tudi na širši družbeni ravni. Pri uporabnikih z depresijo zelo pogosto pride do težav pri vključevanju v okupacije in njihovi izvedbi. Za delovnoterapevtsko obravnavo moramo najprej zbrati potrebne informacije, pri čemer se poslužujemo različnih ocenjevalnih instrumentov. Namen: Predstaviti pomen delovnoterapevtskega ocenjevanja na nivoju okupacije in proučiti v literaturi predstavljene ocenjevalne instrumente, ki se uporabljajo pri uporabnikih z depresijo. Metode dela: Za namen diplomskega dela smo uporabili metodo pregleda literature. Literaturo smo iskali preko Google učenjaka, COBISS, iskalnika Otseeker in Digitalne knjižnice Univerze v Ljubljani, ki omogoča dostop podatkovnih baz ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, PubMed in Whiley Online Library. Vključili smo članke, objavljene po letu 2010, ki so bili v angleškem jeziku in celotno dostopni. Članki so morali poročati o raziskavah narejenih na področju delovnoterapevtskih ocenjevalnih instrumentov na nivoju okupacije pri uporabnikih z motnjami v duševnem zdravju (vključene so morale biti tudi osebe z depresijo) in proučevati njihove lastnosti ter uporabo. Za namen diplomskega dela smo uporabili 12 znanstvenih člankov. Rezultati: Ugotavljamo, da se pri obravnavi uporabnikov z depresijo največ uporabljajo: Kanadski test izvajanja dejavnosti, Vprašalnik o volji, Presejalni instrument za ocenjevanje človekove okupacije in Samoocenitev okupacije. Vsi izbrani delovnoterapevtski ocenjevalni instrumenti so preverjeni, na nivoju okupacije ter so zanesljivi in veljavni in primerni za merjenje uspešnosti obravnave. Razprava in zaključek: Vrednotenje v delovni terapiji je zelo pomemben del obravnave. Pomembno je, da delovni terapevt dobro pozna ocenjevalne instrumente, saj se tako lahko odloči, kateri ocenjevalni instrument je za posameznega uporabnika ustrezen. Uporaba ocenjevalnih instrumentov je izrednega pomena, saj delovni terapevt tako dobi potrebne informacije o uporabniku, na podlagi katerih načrtuje obravnavo. Delovni terapevti po svetu vse bolj stremijo k izvajanju zanesljivih in veljavnih ocenjevalnih instrumentov na nivoju okupacije, saj z njihovo pomočjo lažje utemeljijo in z dokazi podprejo svoje odločitve pri izvajanju obravnave.Introduction: In the last years, depression is becoming one of the most common disorders in the developed world that can affect everyone of us. Because of its frequency and symptoms, depression became one of the biggest problems of our society. Most of the time, clients that are suffering from depression have troubles with Occupational participation and Occupational performance. In order to help them, we first have to collect as much information about them as possible. We can do that by using different Assessment tools. Purpose: To present the importance of occupation-centered evaluation in Occupational Therapy and to study Assessment tools used in clients with depression. Methods: We used the literature review approach. Literature was searched with Google Scholar, COBBIS, Otseeker and the University of Ljubljana Digital Library, which allows access to ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, PubMed and Whiley Online Library databases. We used scientific research articles which were written in English, published after 2010 and those where full text was accessible. Articles had to report about research done in the field of occupation-centered Occupational Therapy Assessment tools used in clients with mental health disorders (depression had to be included) and study their use and psychometric properties. 12 such articles were included in the final analysis. Results: Most used Occupational Therapy Assessment tools used in clients with depression are: Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Volitional Questionnaire, Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool and Occupational Self Assessment. All of these Occupational Therapy Assessment tools are standardised, occupation-centered, reliable, valid and suitable for measuring the success of the Occupational Therapy intervention. Discussion and conclusion: Evaluation in Occupational Therapy is a very important part of the intervention. It is important for the Occupational therapists to have a lot of knowledge about the Assessment tools, so they can choose which one will they use with different clients. Use of Occupational Therapy Assessment tools is very important, because this way Occupational therapists can get all of the needed information about clients for planning further intervention. Occupational therapists all over the world strive to use reliable and valid occupation-centered Assessment tools, because with the results they can explain and support with evidence the decisions they made while planning the intervention

American Journal of Occupational Therapy, 1995Co-Authors: Cheryl Missiuna, Helene J PolatajkoAbstract:The recent introduction of the diagnostic category developmental coordination disorder (DCD) (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1987, 1994), has generated confusion among researchers and clinicians in many fields, including Occupational Therapy. Although the diagnostic criteria appear to be similar to those used to define clumsy children, children with developmental dyspraxia, or children with sensory integrative dysfunction, we are left with the question: Are children who receive the diagnosis of DCD the same as those who receive the other diagnoses, a subgroup, or an entirely distinct group of children? This article will examine the theoretical and empirical literature and use the results to support the thesis that these terms are not interchangeable and yet are not being used in the literature in a way that clearly defines each subgroup of children. Clear definitions and characteristic features need to be identified and associated with each term to guide Occupational Therapy Assessment and intervention and clinical research.
