    The establishment of algal spores plays an essential role in adult kelp distribution and abundance patterns. Sedimentation is a key variable regulating algal spore settlement and success, possibly controlling species-specific dominance in situ.     Summary Global climate warming is exacerbating the melting of glaciers in Arctic and subarctic nearshore regions. Glacial discharge causes increases in sedimentation, abrasion of organisms, and sand/silt cover along with lowered light intensity, salinity, nitrate and hard substrate cover. These effects can have deleterious consequences on foundation species, such as the kelps that provide important habitat structure and support tightly-linked food webs. The purpose of this study was to determine if the kelp, Saccharina latissima, from a glacially-influenced and an oceanic shore in a subarctic Alaskan estuary exhibits differing seasonal growth patterns in response to its environment. Reciprocal in situ shore transplant studies examined seasonal patterns in growth, physiological competence (as maximum quantum yield), morphology and storage product levels (mannitol) of S. latissima. In situ growth was seasonally different at the two shore locations, with a shorter growing season at the glacially-influenced shore. During the glacial melt season, the thalli at the two shore locations were morphologically distinct. Mannitol levels were typically higher in thalli from the oceanic site, with generally low mannitol levels at the end and the beginning of the growing season on both shores. Maximum quantum yield was consistently high (≥0.7) at both shore sites and did not vary seasonally. Growth rates of glacially-influenced transplants to the oceanic shore suggest that the glacially-influenced population has a different seasonal growth pattern from that of the oceanic shore site, which seems to be genetically fixed or based on differences in gene expression. It appears that S. latissima is a highly resilient species, partly due to high phenotypic plasticity, which may have led to genetic fixation under persistent glacial conditions.

    Background and Aims: Due to the lack of knowledge about macroalgae in Tabasco’s coastal lagoons, this work was determined in three seasons, the macroalgae diversity associated to the El Carmen lagoon, municipality of Cardenas and contributes to the biological and ecological knowledge of the state of Tabasco, Mexico. Methods: Three samplings were carried out in an annual cycle from 2015 to 2016, during the rainy, northern wind and dry seasons. The organisms were collected manually, fixated with seawater and 4% formalin, identified, and deposited in the UJAT and FCME (UNAM) herbaria. Key results: Twenty-one species of marine macroalgae were recorded, of which three are new records for the state of Tabasco. The Rhodophyta division with the families Gracilariaceae and Rhodomelaceae had the highest species richness and Gracilaria blodgetti was the most abundant species. The greatest diversity and abundance appeared in the northern wind season. Conclusions: There is an increase to 125 species in the number of records of Rhodophyta species and 28 in the Ochrophyta for Tabasco. Hence, it is suggested to extend the sampling time and perform systematic work in an annual cycle, in order to have a better representation of the diversity and seasonality of the macroalgae in the El Carmen lagoon.Antecedentes y Objetivos: Debido a la escasez de conocimiento sobre macroalgas en lagunas costeras de Tabasco, en este trabajo se determina la diversidad ficoflorística de macroalgas asociadas a la laguna El Carmen, municipio de Cárdenas, y se contribuye al conocimiento biológico y ecológico en el estado de Tabasco. Métodos: Se realizaron tres muestreos en un ciclo anual de 2015 a 2016 durante la época de lluvias, la de nortes y la de secas. Los organismos se recolectaron manualmente, se fijaron con agua marina y formol al 4%, se identificaron y se depositaron en los herbarios FCME (UNAM) y UJAT.     Foram estudadas as macroalgas marinhas bentônicas de um habitat pouco explorado (Bacia Potiguar, Rio Grande do Norte, Nordeste do Brasil) e cuja informação florística é rara, para se conhecer a diversidade taxonômica e padrões de distribuição em um infralitoral tropical, onde vários empreendimentos estão em fase de instalação, sendo enfatizadas as Chlorophyta, como indicadoras da qualidade ambiental. Amostragens de macroalgas bentônicas foram feitas, com dois tipos de dragas e uma rede de arrasto do tipo porta, durante quatro campanhas: julho de 2002, maio e novembro de 2003 e maio de 2004, em 43 estações. Foram identificados 196 táxons de macroalgas (incluindo variedades e formas), distribuídos nos filos Chlorophyta (29%), Ochrophyta (17%) e Rhodophyta (54%). Três espécies de Rhodophyta, Halopthys schottii (W. R. Taylor) L.E. Philips & De Clerck (63,9%), Bryothamnion seaforthii (Turner) Kütz. (62,5%), Osmundaria obtusiloba (C. Agardh) R. E. Norris (47,2%) e uma Ochrophyta, Dictyopteris delicatula J. V. Lamour. ( 43,1%) foram classificadas como as mais frequentes na área. Os táxons pouco frequentes (frequência de ocorrência entre 11,1% e 34,7%) distribuíram-se em 19 Rhodophyta, oito Ochrophyta e duas Chlorophyta. Na categoria dos táxons de frequência de ocorrência esporádica com menos de 10%, foram identificadas 39 espécies de Rhodophyta, e Chlorophyta e 16 Ochrophyta. Chlorophyta esteve representado por 54 táxons. A família mais frequente foi Caulerpaceae, e o gênero mais diversificado foi Caulerpa J. V. Lamour., com 11 espécies. Do total dos táxons identificados, uma espécie de Rhodophyta, Palisada poiteaui (J. V. Lamour.) K. W. Nam var. gemmifera (Harvey) Sentíes, M. T. Fujii & Díaz teve a sua ocorrência confirmada para o litoral brasileiro e 14 espécies estão sendo citadas pela primeira vez para o litoral Potiguar, sendo sete Rhodophyta: Ptilothamnion speluncarum (Collins & Herv.) D. L. Ballant., Ceramium brasiliense A. B. Joly, C. COCENTINO, A. L. M. Flora Ficológica da Plataforma Continental do Litoral Setentrional... 16 comptum Børgesen, C. flaccidum (Kütz.) A distribuição das espécies de Chlorophyta por profundidade mostrou que o maior número de táxons ocorreu entre 10 e 20m, e uma ampla distribuição vertical foi registrada para Anadyomene stellata (Wulfen in Jacq.) C. Agardh, Chamaedoris peniculum (J. Ellis & Solander) Kuntze, Codium isthmocladum Vickers, Microdictyon vanbosseae Setch., Udotea occidentalis A. Gepp & E. Gepp e Ventricaria ventricosa (J. Agardh) J. L. Olsen & J. A. West. Das amostras coletadas por draga nas quatro faixas de profundidade, o transecto T3 (faixa de 20 a 50m) apresentou o maior número de espécies (114 táxons), seguida por T2 (10 a 20m) com 111 táxons. Em geral, Rhodophyta apresentou uma maior distribuição em relação às diversas profundidades, principalmente as algas calcárias não articuladas, com 29% de frequência de ocorrência.
