  • IDENTIFICATION OF NEW Technology SKILLS REQUIRED BY TEACHERS OF Office Technology AND MANAGEMENT FOR TEACHING IN POLYTECHNICS IN NORTH CENTRAL NIGERIA
    2019
Co-Authors: Nimfel Timya, Moris Priscilla Wetnwan, Yongsun Shikfu Bewaran
    Abstract:

The study examined the new Technology skills required by teachers of Office Technology and management for teaching in Polytechnics in North central Nigeria. One research question guided the study and the hypothesis of no significant difference was tested using the independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey design was adopted. The population of the study consisted of 85 teachers of Office Technology and management (OTM) drawn from Polytechnics in North central Nigeria. The entire population was adopted as the sample in view of the small size. The main instrument for data collection was a four point rating scale questionnaire. The data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The mean was used to answer the research questions while the standard deviation was used to determine the closeness or otherwise of the responses from the mean. The findings revealed that OTM teachers highly required new Technology skills in the use search engines, hypertext markup language, browsers on the World Wide Web, interactive multimedia packages, web 2.0 tools, Wi-Fi, short messaging services, and multimedia messaging service. The findings further revealed that there was no significant difference between the mean response of experienced and less experienced teachers of OTM on the new Technology skills required for teaching in Polytechnics (t 80 = 0.215, P>0.05). It was concluded that new Technology skill are critical for the production of competent OTM graduates who will fit perfectly in to the modern work trend. Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, it was recommended among others that authorities of Polytechnics must make it a point of duty to ensure regular retraining of OTM teachers on the use of new technologies for teaching. Key words: New Technology; Skill; Office Technology and Management

    Abstract:

The important role of Office Technology and Management (OTM) in the production of skilled and competent workforce for sustainable national development will be a mirage if quality and effective teaching and learning is not maintained. It is against this backdrop that the paper examined quality assurance and skill aquisition in OTM for sustainable national development. It discussed the meaning of quality assurance, skill acquisition, objectives of OTM, strategies for qualitative OTM programme, sustainable national development, OTM and national development and factors militating against quality assurance in OTM for sustainable national development. The paper concluded that the non-sustainability of the Nigerian economy is as a result of government’s neglect of Vocational and Technical education to which Office Technology and Management is a viable option. The paper recommended that management of polytechnics and departments of OTM should avoid window dressing for accreditation and set up monitoring teams to monitor and supervise the teaching process to ensure quality teaching. Keywords :Quality Assurance; Skill Acquisition; Office Technology andManagement; Sustainable National Development.

  • Stressing Office Technology's Non-Technical Side: Applying Concepts from Adaptive Structuration Theory
Issues of Human Computer Interaction, 1
    Co-Authors: Huub J.m. Ruel
    Abstract:

Office Technology projects are not a “quick and easy fix”. They often fail to meet their objectives. This is probably due to a lack of attention for the non-technical element in Office Technology projects. To develop this non-technical side, in this chapter we introduce the concepts of spirit and appropriation, adopted from Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST). Spirit concerns the intention of a certain Technology. Advanced information Technology use must be considered as a matter of appropriation. In theory, Office Technology carries a certain spirit, which should guide users, but this spirit can only be materialized when users work with, or appropriate, the Technology. A precondition is that users have to have a clear image of this spirit. In this chapter, we report about the results of a study that show that if users of Office Technology find the spirit of the Technology clear, they incorporate the Technology better in their day-to-day tasks. Based upon these results we come up with a number of recommendations for Office Technology implementation and use.

  • The non-technical side of Office Technology
    2001
    Co-Authors: Hubertus Johannes Maria Ruel
    Abstract:

Many Office Technology projects fail. The outcomes of these projects are often not in line with initial expectations. This book assumes that this disappointing result is largely the result of the fact that Office Technology projects are too IT-driven. The basic assumption is that the problems experienced in a specific Office environment can be solved by a technical solution. In this book, the author suggests that Office Technology projects should acknowledge the existence of a non-technical side to Office Technology, namely the underlying intentions of the Technology, which is referred to as the spirit. The effects of new Office Technology are not a function of the quality of the Technology itself, but of the extent to which end-users apply the Technology in accordance with its spirit. This suggests that Office Technology is 'realized' while it is used, not during its technical development. Therefore, improving Office Technology projects means that they should be less IT-driven, and more IT-use driven.

  • Getting the Spirit of Office Technologies! Does the Internal Organization Environment Support or Constrain?
Human Factors in Information Systems, 1
    Co-Authors: Hubertus Johannes Maria Ruel
    Abstract:

The relationship between Advanced Information Technologies (AIT) and organization is complex. Several theories and approaches try to get grip on this complex relationship. Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST) (DeSanctis and Poole, 1994) is one of them. It introduces the concept of spirit of AIT as an important determinant of AIT appropriation. AIT with a clear, coherent spirit will lead to a high level of AIT appropriation. But what about the role of the internal organizational environment? Does this constrain or support the role of the AIT’s spirit regarding AIT appropriation? This paper presents a study that aims to find an answer to this question. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested in four Offices where employees used Office technologies. Results confirm that a clear spirit is positively related to the level of appropriation as distinguished by DeSanctis and Poole (1994) and Poole and DeSanctis (1990). The results also make clear that this relationship is more positive among users who experienced a low level of change in the internal organizational environment along with the Office Technology implementation than among users who experienced a high level of change. Furthermore, the relationship is more positive among users with a low level of work autonomy than among users with a high level of work autonomy. This is not fully in line with our expectations. However, we think an explanation is available. We suppose that the answer lies in the Office Technology development process. All Office technologies in this study’s Offices were probably developed without anticipating the changes that Office Technology implementations might bring about in the internal organizational environment and with the aim to build systems that “reconfirm” the current “restrictive” work procedures. This study’s results once again indicate that Office Technology and other organizational components are interrelated.

  • The non-technical side of Office Technology: managing the clarity of the spirit and the appropriation of Office Technology
Managing the Human Side of Information Technology, 1
    Co-Authors: Hubertus Johannes Maria Ruel
    Abstract:

Office work plays an important role in Western economies, and the use of Office technologies in this type of work is inextricably linked. People employed in Office environments are confronted with an almost continuous introduction of new Office technologies, as decision-makers in companies believe that the market drives them towards being very attentive to the latest developments in the field of IT. Furthermore, IT in general has become a strategic factor in doing business (e.g., e-commerce), which has further increased the need for the newest Office technologies. As a result, the number of projects in organizations to develop and implement new Office technologies has unarguably increased. However, Office Technology projects are often confronted with problems. In our view, these problematic experiences are due to a lack of attention to the non-technical side of Office Technology development, implementation and use. Hence, in this chapter, we present a study based on a view of Office Technology project that stresses the non-technical side of Office Technology. We introduce the concepts of spirit of Office Technology and Office Technology appropriation. By testing three hypotheses based upon this view, it is shown that this concept can be helpful in contributing to an improvement in the understanding of Office Technology development, implementation and use. This is scientifically interesting and relevant since the outcomes of our study say something about the value of the theoretical framework applied. It is also of practical interest, as the results of the study can help in the everyday practice of Office Technology projects.
