  • an exploratory study of internet initiated sexual offenses and the Chat room sex offender has the internet enabled a new typology of sex offender
Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment, 2011
Co-Authors: Peter Briggs, Walter T Simon, Stacy Simonsen
    Abstract:

This exploratory study examined 51 participants convicted of an Internet-initiated sex offense in which they attempted to entice an adolescent into a sexual relationship using an Internet Chat room. All participants were convicted of a sex offense and subject to an evaluation as a part of sentencing requirements in Colorado. Clinical and behavioral data were obtained from each subject’s offense-specific evaluation and Chat room transcripts. The results of the study found that 90% of the participants were apprehended as a result of an Internet sex sting. The authors conclude that Internet Chat room sex offenders constitute a separate group characterized by less severe criminogenic factors than other sex offenders (rapists, child molesters). It can be hypothesized that Chat room sex offenders avoid relationships and spend a significant amount of time in Online Chat rooms as a primary social and sexual outlet, and engage in other sexually compulsive behaviors. Within this offender group, it was discovered th...

  • peer counseling in an Online Chat service a content analysis of social support
Cyberpsychology Behavior and Social Networking, 2011
    Co-Authors: Ruben Fukkink
    Abstract:

In a recently launched one-on-one Chat service for young people with psychosocial problems, young peer volunteers (ages 16-23) have a leading role in the conversations, comparable to the role of counselors in web-based and telephone-based child help-line services. A content analysis of the Chat conversations showed that the contribution of the peer counselors in the confidential Chat sessions satisfied the various quality criteria of the service. Moreover, the peer counselors offered the young people who visited the site varied types of social support. The variety of types of social support appeared a stronger predictor of the quality ratings than the length of the conversation or the quantity (instead of variety) of social support, which emphasizes the importance of multidimensional social support in Online conversations.

  • The Social Benefits of Online Chat Rooms for University Students: An Explorative Study.
Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management, 2009
    Co-Authors: A. R. Mubarak, A. Rohde, P. Pakulski
    Abstract:

The social environment prevailing within higher education institutions in Australia has seen many changes in recent years. Many factors have contributed to these changes and this paper explains the areas in which student life in Australia has changed and the challenges these changes have posed to students. This paper argues that universities in Australia and elsewhere need to prepare themselves to cope with the rapidly changing needs of their students. Information technological tools such as Internet Chat room could be one of the cheapest and student-friendly tools which universities could use to meet the social and psychological needs of their students. A Chat room was created for the students of Flinders University (Adelaide, Australia) and this paper explains the ways in which this Chat room was used by the students. Based on the observations made, this paper highlights the fact that Chat rooms could be a useful tool for universities in this day and age.

  • mutual disclosures and content intimacy in customer group engagement evidence from Online Chat groups
    Social Science Research Network, 2021
    Co-Authors: Yue Feng, Xiaoquan Zhang
    Abstract:

Firm-hosted Online Chat groups (OCGs) are an emerging strategy for businesses to organize Online activities and engage customers. It enables real-time conversations in a relatively private and anonymous environment. Our paper investigates the role of information disclosure in customer engagement in OCGs. Based on information disclosure theory, we disentangle two types of disclosures, self-disclosure and reverse-disclosure, which we refer to as mutual disclosures. We examine the effects of mutual disclosures from different OCG parties (i.e., focal customer, peer customers and brand managers) on focal customer’s subsequent engagement. Moreover, we examine the intimacy levels of disclosure content and explore the interplay of mutual disclosures regarding content intimacy consistency. Text mining techniques are employed to identify group conversations and measure content intimacy levels of personal disclosure messages. Our findings reveal that mutual disclosures between focal customers and their peers induce more subsequent engagement. Our findings uncover multifaceted influences from content intimacy consistency between mutual disclosures on customer engagement. The results of this paper extend our understanding of how personal information exchange in Online group conversations affects user engagement. They also provide insights into the interactivities among group members and will help firms develop strategies for customer relationship management through OCGs.
