    Abstract:

    In this research feeder routes and coordinated schedules were developed for Integration of feeder public buses with suburban trains. A Heuristic Feeder Route Generation Algorithm was developed for generation of feeder routes. Optimal coordinated schedules for feeder buses were developed in coordination with the existing given schedules of suburban trains. Genetic algorithm, which is a robust optimization technique, is used for the optimizing coordinated schedules. Andheri and Vileparle suburban railway stations of Mumbai, India were selected as study areas. Feeder routes for public buses and coordinated schedules of public buses for the existing given schedules of suburban trains at the two suburban railway stations were successfully developed in this research.

    Abstract:

    In this paper a heuristic algorithm is discussed for development of feeder routes to railway stations. The heuristic algorithm is a part of a model that has been developed for Operational Integration of suburban railway stations and public buses. The model has two distinct components, the first part is development of feeder routes for public buses to suburban railway stations and the second part is determination of optimally coordinated schedules of feeder bus services for the given schedules of suburban trains. The second part of the model is beyond the scope of this paper. Andheri and Vileparle suburban railway stations on a western railway line in Mumbai, India were taken as study areas, and extensive data collection was done at these railway stations. Various nodes and their potential demands from these railway stations were identified, and the demand-deviated feeder routes were developed for Bombay Electric Supply and Transport buses, which are being used as public buses in Mumbai, India.

  • Real-Time Intermodal Substitution: Strategy for Airline Recovery from Schedule Perturbation and for Mitigation of Airport Congestion

    Abstract:

    A strategy for airline recovery from schedule perturbation caused by adverse weather or other temporary events is proposed. Capacity reduction at a hub airport caused by these temporary events is reflected as reduced slots (or later controlled time of arrivals) for airlines from ground delay programs. It is suggested that under severe circumstances legacy airlines with hub-and-spoke networks implement ground transportation into their network to substitute for flights. This strategy is called real-time intermodal substitution (RTIMS). RTIMS is different from air-rail cooperation practiced in Europe in that it is triggered only by a severe demand and supply imbalance at major hub airports and it performs Operational Integration of airside and ground transportation. Mathematical programming is presented to help airlines make decisions about if and how to delay, canceling flights, or substituting flights with buses.     Abstract:

    This study builds a conceptual model to describe the relationships among Operational Integration and strategic Integration of supply chain, product-based and customer action-based service provided by industrial manufacturers, and firm performance. Using sample data from Chinese equipment manufacturers, this study finds that Operational Integration of supply chain has positive direct effect on product-based service, while strategic Integration has positive direct effect on customer action-based service. Furthermore, product-based service is the basic transformation strategy for industrial manufacturing companies and it has not only positive direct effect but also indirect effect through customer action-based service on firm performance.
