  • fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier with high speed swept pump
    IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2011
    Co-Authors: Chi Zhang, P. C. Chui, Kevin K. Tsia, Kim K. Y. Cheung, Kenneth K. Y. Wong
    Abstract:

We experimentally demonstrate and characterize a high-speed frequency-swept pump in a fiber-Optical Parametric Amplifier (FOPA). The high-speed swept pump is achieved with the swept rate as high as 78 MHz by a technique called dispersive Fourier transformation (DFT), which circumvents the fundamental speed limitation shown in the conventional swept-sources based on the cavity configurations. Based on such swept pump FOPA, the idler can be generated with a wavelength range twice the pump bandwidth. Such an all-Optical approach offers an order-of-magnitude higher swept rate and thus lends itself to many applications such as high-speed signal processing and Optical imaging.

  • millimeter wave uwb signal generation via frequency up conversion using fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier
    IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2009
    Co-Authors: Yu Liang, Kenneth K. Y. Wong
    Abstract:

We propose and demonstrate a novel approach to generate millimeter-wave (MMW) ultra-wideband (UWB) signal via frequency up-conversion using fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier (OPA). The baseband UWB signal is amplified by a high-repetition-rate pulsed pump and generates many sidebands separated by the modulation frequency of the pump. By selecting two or three of the sidebands and beating in the photodetector, we can obtain an up-converted signal in the MMW band. In our experiment, we have successfully demonstrated UWB signal up-conversion from 3 to ~ 19 GHz with 18-dB Optical gain using fiber OPA.

  • High-Sensitivity Optical PreAmplifier for WDM Systems Using an Optical Parametric Amplifier
    IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2009
    Co-Authors: Yu Liang, P. C. Chui, Jia Li, Kenneth K. Y. Wong
    Abstract:

We propose and demonstrate a novel preAmplifier to improve receiver sensitivity for a 10-Gb/s return-to-zero on-off keying format by using a fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier. Receiver sensitivity can reach down to -42 dBm at bit-error rate = 10-9. This sensitivity is only 1.1 dB off the quantum limit. The crosstalk issue is also investigated for this dual-end detection scheme in a wavelength-division-multiplexing system.

  • Wide-Band Generation of Picosecond Pulse Using Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier and Oscillator
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 2009
    Co-Authors: Yue Zhou, P. C. Chui, Kim K. Y. Cheung, Sigang Yang, Kenneth K. Y. Wong
    Abstract:

We first demonstrate a wideband generation of picosecond pulse using fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier (FOPA). High quality pulse is generated at 85 nm away from the pump with pulsewidth narrower than that of the pump. We then explore fiber Optical Parametric oscillator (FOPO) configuration which has the advantage of eliminating the need of seeding laser, leading to a potentially wider wavelength tunability and flexibility. The tuning range of the FOPO is from 1511 nm to 1541 nm and from 1583 nm to 1613 nm, which is as wide as 60 nm, with wavelength span of over 100 nm. Nearly-transform-limited sub-picosecond pulses are generated by this technique.

  • a comprehensive study on crosstalk suppression techniques in fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier by modulation format
IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, 2008
    Co-Authors: B P P Kuo, P. C. Chui, Kenneth K. Y. Wong
    Abstract:

With the presence of multiple-WDM input signals, ON-OFF keying (OOK)-modulated signals suffer from crosstalk in fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier (OPA) due to cross-gain modulation (XGM) and four-wave mixing (FWM) effects. We demonstrated substantial crosstalk suppression in one-pump OPA by using return-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) modulation format, which with its pattern-independent amplitude and subunity duty cycle would be effective in reducing the XGM and FWM effects significantly. By using the RZ-DPSK format, the power penalty was improved by at least 0.8 dB over RZ-OOK, non-RZ (NRZ)-DPSK, and NRZ-OOK formats with four 10 Gb/s channels, separated by 200 GHz spacing. With eight 10 Gb/s channels separated by 100 GHz spacing, a Q-factor penalty of the RZ-DPSK signal was reduced by 2.4 dB compared to RZ-OOK counterparts.

  • midinfrared Optical Parametric Amplifier with 6 4 11 mu text m range based on baga 4 se 7
    IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2015
Co-Authors: Feng Yang, Qinjun Peng, Jingyuan Zhang, Chuangtian Chen, Nan Zong, Hongyan Xu, Fengfeng Zhang, Naixia Zhai, Yicheng Wu, Zuyan Xu
    Abstract:

A widely tunable picosecond midinfrared (MIR) Optical Parametric Amplifier (OPA) with wavelength ranging from 6.4 to 11 $\mu \text{m}$ based on the BaGa4Se7 crystal was demonstrated. The MIR OPA was pumped by a 30 ps 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser and injected by a KTiOPO4 (KTP)-based narrow-bandwidth widely tunable near-infrared seed. The wide spectral generation using type-I ( $\text{o}\,\,\to \,\, \text{e}\,\,+\,\,\text{e}$ ) critically phase-matched Parametric amplification in BaGa4 Se7 was investigated. The output energies were measured to be $\sim 38~\mu \text{J}$ at 11 $\mu \text{m}$ and up to $\sim 100~\mu \text{J}$ at 6.4 $\mu \text{m}$ under pumping energy of $\sim 4.1$ mJ. Further, the type-I phase-matching angles of BaGa4Se7 crystal for idler light generation in the range of 6.4–11 $\mu \text{m}$ were experimentally measured and the discrepancy between the experiment and theoretical calculation was discussed.

    Abstract:

Abstract A mid-infrared (IR) Optical Parametric Amplifier (OPA) in a newly developed wide band-gap nonlinear crystal BaGa4S7 (BGS) was reported for the first time. The BGS-OPA was pumped by a 30 ps pulse 1064 nm laser operating at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. A maximum idler pulse energy of ~130 μJ at 7.25 μm was obtained at pump energy of ~6.9 mJ, corresponding to a pump to idler photon conversion efficiency of ~13%. Moreover, across 6.3–8.8 μm idler tuning range was demonstrated, with output energies of ~66 μJ at 6.3 μm and > 27 μJ over the entire tuning range under a fixed pump energy of ~4.1 mJ. Finally, the corresponding type-I (e → o + o) phase-matching (PM) angles of the generated mid-IR idler light in BGS were measured and compared with the theoretical calculation result based on the reported Sellmeier equations.

The idler operating at 7.5 μm with the highest pulse energy of 170 μJ was obtained under a pump energy of 14 mJ. The corresponding energy conversion efficiency is ∼1.21%, and the photon conversion efficiency is 8.6%. The output energies were measured to be ∼121  μJ at 7 μm and ∼21  μJ at 12 μm.
