    Abstract:

    Optical Power-Level monitors are necessary for WDM photonic networks to manage reliable communication. The small sue monitors with a lot of channels are desired as the number of WDM channels has been increasing. In order to meet the expectation, we have integrated 40-channel WDM Power-Level monitor functions into the arrayed Optical waveguide platform (15 x 30 x 1 mm) with both directional couplers and newly developed Micro Pyramid Mirrors (MPMs). The couplers tap the monitor lights, and the ME'% formed with molding gold bumps reflect the lights upward to PDs.

    Summary from only given. We have developed a compact and mass-production 40-channel Power Level monitor based on a planer lightwave circuit (PLC). We believe our method has the following advantages. The combination of directional coupler and gold micro pyramid mirror makes it possible to tap any amount and anywhere on PLC even between arrayed waveguides. Because this method basically consists of well-established PLC process, wire bonding process and flip-chip mounting process, it is suitable for mass production.

    Raman microprobe spectra from dry‐etched, coated (110) AlGaAs single quantum well laser mirrors show, apart from the allowed phonon modes, a series of symmetry forbidden modes whose strength is dependent on the mirror treatment prior to coating. A particularly strong mode at 193 cm−1 can be attributed to disorder activated longitudinal acoustic phonon scattering in addition to—and this is new—the Eg‐mode of elemental arsenic. The existence of lattice disorder and arsenic clusters is confirmed by Rayleigh scattering and energy dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy. The Optical Power Level at catastrophic Optical mirror damage and the local mirror temperatures of the biased laser are found to have a strong dependence on mirror disorder.
