  • a multi objective window Optimisation Problem
Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference, 2011
Co-Authors: Alexander E I Brownlee, Jonathan A Wright, Monjur Mourshed
    Abstract:

We present an Optimisation Problem which seeks to locate the Pareto-optimal front of building window and shading designs minimising two objectives: projected energy use of the operational building and its construction cost. This Problem is of particular interest because it has many variable interactions and each function evaluation is relatively time-consuming. It also makes use of a freely-available building simulation program EnergyPlus which may be used in many other building design Optimisation Problems. We describe the Problem and report the results of experiments comparing the performance of a number of existing multi-objective evolutionary algorithms applied to it. We conclude that this represents a promising real-world application area.

  • Optimisation of gravity fed water distribution network design a critical review
European Journal of Operational Research, 2013
Co-Authors: Annelies De Corte, Kenneth Sorensen
    Abstract:

This paper surveys the literature on the Optimisation of water distribution network design. The water distribution network design (WDND) Optimisation Problem entails finding the material and diameter of each pipe in the network so that the total cost of the network is minimised without violating any hydraulic constraints. This is a difficult combinatorial Optimisation Problem, in which decision variables are discrete and both cost function and constraints are non-linear. Over the past 30years, a large number of methods, especially in the field of (meta) heuristics, have been developed to solve this Problem, most of which obtain good results on the available benchmark networks. In addition to outlining the basic features of each method, a detailed computational comparison is presented. Based on this comparison, some issues with the current state of the art in this domain are discussed, and some future research directions are suggested. Additionally, the need for an adequate set of benchmark instances is motivated, and the minimal requirements for an instance set generator are discussed.

  • l 2 gain analysis and control synthesis of uncertain switched linear systems subject to actuator saturation
International Journal of Systems Science, 2012
Co-Authors: Xinquan Zhang, Jun Zhao, Georgi M Dimirovski
    Abstract:

This article addresses the L 2-gain analysis and control synthesis Problem for a class of uncertain switched linear systems with saturating actuators and external disturbances. First, when the controllers are pre-given, an analysis condition on disturbance tolerance is established under which the state trajectory starting from the origin will remain inside a bounded set. By this condition, the Problem of estimating disturbance tolerance capability is formulated as a constrained Optimisation Problem. Then, the restricted L 2-gain property is analysed over the set of tolerable disturbances. An upper bound on the restricted L 2-gain is estimated by solving a constrained Optimisation Problem. Furthermore, when controller gain matrices are design variables, these Optimisation Problems can be adapted for controller design. All the results are achieved by utilising the multiple Lyapunov functions method and presented in terms of an LMI Optimisation-based approach. A numerical example is given to show the effecti...

  • l 2 gain analysis and control synthesis of uncertain discrete time switched linear systems with time delay and actuator saturation
    International Journal of Control, 2011
Co-Authors: Xinquan Zhang, Jun Zhao, Georgi M Dimirovski
    Abstract:

The Problem of L 2-gain analysis and control synthesis is studied for a class of uncertain discrete-time switched linear systems with time delay and saturating actuators by using the multiple Lyapunov functions method. With the state feedback controllers adopted beforehand, an analysis condition on disturbance tolerance is derived under which the operating state trajectory with zero initial condition will remain inside a bounded set in its proximity. Then with this condition at hand, the largest disturbance tolerance level is determined via the solution of a constrained Optimisation Problem. Then, a sufficient condition for the restricted L 2-gain over the set of tolerable disturbances is derived. The smallest upper bound on the restricted L 2-gain is also obtained by solving a constrained Optimisation Problem. Furthermore, when controller gain matrices are design variables, these Optimisation Problems are adjusted for solving the control design task. An illustrative numerical example is given to demonstr...
