    Abstract The recognition, diagnosis, and management of common Oral conditions requires knowledge of the lesion's clinical characteristics as well as the underlying Pathology of the lesion. A thorough medical history, knowledge of normal anatomy, and a complete head and neck examination are necessary for the early recognition of Oral lesions. Once any Oral Pathology is noted, clinical characteristics of size, location, texture, color, symptoms, and duration are necessary to arrive at a working plan and eventually a definitive diagnosis. In the end, the diagnosis often requires a biopsy or culture of the lesion. The clinical and histopathologic and/or mycologic correlation renders a final diagnosis leading to therapeutic options. A thorough knowledge of common Oral lesions will allow the dentist/specialist to provide proper therapy or allow for referral to an Oral medicine or Oral surgery specialist. This review covers common infectious, reactive/traumatic, white, red, and bone lesions, as well as the vesiculobullous/desquamative gingival conditions, with a focus on periodontology and implantology. We cover the etiology, clinical features, histoPathology, and treatment of each Oral pathological condition.

    Abstract:

    Background Bibliometric analysis highlights the key topics and research trends which have shaped the understanding and management of a concerned disease. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize the most-cited articles on Oral lichen planus (OLP), and highlight the analysis of key topics and research trends. Methods A comprehensive search was performed and identified in the Scopus database from 1907 to 5 March 2019 for the top-100 most-cited articles on OLP. Results The number of citations of the 100 selected articles varied from 101 to 570, with a mean of 178.7 citations per article. Malignant potential, immunopathogenesis, and topical drug therapy were the top-3 study topics, and the majority of high-quality articles were the research of the 3 topics. Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine (n = 19) and Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology (n = 14) were 2 journals with the most articles published. Both van der Waal I. and Scully C. were the most frequently contributing authors (n = 9). United States (n = 27) and Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (n = 7) was the most contributing country and institution, respectively. Systematic reviews (n = 2), randomized controlled trial (n = 1), cohort studies (n = 17) were study designs with higher evidence level, but the large majority (n = 80) were considered lower level. Conclusions The results of this first citation analysis of the 100 most cited articles on OLP provide a historical perspective on scientific evolution, and suggest further research trends and clinical practice in the field of OLP.

Asesor del Cuerpo Medico Forense, Tribunales Federales de Cordoba (Argentina). RESUMEN Se presenta un caso de muerte por abocamiento de Fusil Automatico Liviano –FAL, calibre 7.62 x 51 mm NATO, proyectil de alta velocidad (810 m/s), con una configuracion atipica en sus heridas de entrada y salida, la primera con grandes contusiones y desgarros Orales y periOrales tanto en tejidos blandos como duros (fracturas dentarias y oseas) y la segunda con una pequena lesion perforante a nivel cervical, ambas morfologias originadas por transmision de la energia cinetica y de escaso reporte en la literatura. Dadas estas condiciones atipicas, se expone el procedimiento realizado de cuna lingual para corroborar la presencia de productos de la deflagracion de la polvora y con ello el abocamiento del arma, y se presenta a la denominacion de Patologia Oral Forense como la especialidad odontologica dedicada a la “identificacion, documentacion, recoleccion y preservacion de todos los indicios en tejidos duros y blandos bucales, susceptibles de transformarse en evidencia juridica”, netamente mas compleja que el reconocido pero injustamente circunscrito procedimiento de identificacion por vias odontologicas.

    Abstract:

    We present an intraOral shooting fatality case by Fusil Automatique Leger – FAL, high velocity infantry rifle 7.62 x 51 mm NATO, 810 m/s, with the atypical morphology of the entrance and exit wounds. Entrance showed great contused wound on mouth and periorifitial in both soft and hard tissues (fractures of teeth and bones) and exit wound showed a small perforation in cervix. The effective kinetic energy was the most significant factor determining those exiguously reported patterns. Because of the atypical conditions, we present the performing of the tongue sample extraction to demonstrate the presence of powder particles and confirm the Oral wound as the entry wound. We suggest the term Forensic Oral Pathology to define the speciality of dentistry studying the “identification, documentation, recovering and saving of all sings in Oral soft and hard tissues to making available the legal evidence”, more integral and comprehensive than the recognized but injusticely delimitated procedure of dental identification.
