    Abstract:

    The author argues that the preponderance of theoretical reasoning and empirical evidence suggests a positive first Order Relationship between financial development and economic growth. There is evidence that the financial development level is a good predictor of future rates of economic growth, capital accumulation, and technological change. Moreover, cross-country, case-style, industry level and firm-level analysis document extensive periods when financial development crucially affects the speed and pattern of economic development. The author explains what the financial system does and how it affects, and is affected by, economic growth. Theory suggests that financial instruments, markets and institutions arise to mitigate the effects of information and transaction costs. A growing literature shows that differences in how well financial systems reduce information and transaction costs influence savings rates, investment decisions, technological innovation, and long-run growth rates. A less developed theoretical literature shows how changes in economic activity can influence financial systems. The author advocates a functional approach to understanding the role of financial systems in economic growth. This approach focuses on the ties between growth and the quality of the functions provided by the financial systems. The author discourages a narrow focus on one financial instrument, or a particular institution. Instead, the author addresses the more comprehensive question: What is the Relationship between financial structure and the functioning of the financial system?

    Abstract:

    This critique argues that the preponderance of theoretical reasoning and empirical evidence suggests a positive, first-Order Relationship between financial development and economic growth. The body of work would push even most skeptics toward the belief that the development of financial markets and institutions is a critical and inextricable part of the growth process and away from the view that the financial system is an inconsequential sideshow, responding passively to economic growth. Many gaps remain, however, and the paper highlights areas in acute need of additional research.

    We analyze a classroom design experiment, conducted in a fourth grade classroom, that served to explore an instructional path in which the introduction of unit fractions and supporting proportional reasoning coincide. Central to this path is the use of means of support in which the objects that unit fractions quantify are not characterized as equal-sized parts of a whole, but as entities that are always separate from a reference unit. We argue that such a path is crucial for helping students develop deep quantitative understandings of fractions, where fraction quantities are, from the very start, linked to the reciprocal and multiplicative relations that their use implies. We focus on the first part of the design experiment in which we helped the students make sense of a concept that is important for initial fraction learning and proportional reasoning, the inverse Order Relationship among unit fractions.

    Abstract:

    High-manganese austenitic TWIP steels exhibit very high strength and elongation before necking. The peculiarity of these steels is that mechanical twins form during straining due to their low stacking fault energy (SFE). These twins are usually thought to have a huge impact on the outstanding properties of the materials, either by bringing about a dynamic Hall & Petch effect and/or a composite effect. In this study, the appearance of mechanical twins during tensile straining is investigated for a Fe-20%Mn-1.2%C TWIP steel. The twinning rate was estimated by means of point counting analysis on EBSD micrographs at different strain levels. The reliability of this method is first thoroughly discussed. It is then shown that there exists a first Order Relationship between this twinning rate and the work hardening rate. © 2012 Elsevier B.V..
