Aligning Organizational Values in systems development projects

Alec CramAbstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the antecedents and implications of aligning the Organizational Values embedded in a systems development approach (e.g. agile) with the Organizational Values of project team members.Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative case study approach is used to examine systems development project teams at three organizations, each using a development approach that incorporates different Organizational Value dimensions. Interviews were conducted with developers, systems analysts, and managers regarding their systems development experiences. A structured coding of the interview transcripts was then completed to enable analysis of Value dimensions.Findings – By comparing the dominant Values between the project teams and their development approach, varying degrees of alignment were identified. HICSS - Aligning Organizational Values in Systems Development Projects: An Empirical Study

Alec CramAbstract:This paper examines the concept of alignment between the Organizational Values embedded in a systems development approach and the Organizational Values of a project team. Though past research has suggested that firm performance relates to the degree of strategic and structural alignment, the role of Organizational Values alignment remains ambiguous at the project level. Using a multiple case study approach, this research explores systems development project teams at three organizations, each using a development approach that incorporates different Organizational Value dimensions. By comparing the dominant Values between the project teams and their development approach, we find varying degrees of alignment. Where alignment is high, perceptions of the systems development process are associated with satisfaction and enthusiasm; where alignment is low, perceptions focus on frustration and discontent. Based on the study's findings, four propositions are outlined for examination in future research.

Inter-Organizational Information Systems and Interaction in Public vs. Private Sector - Comparing Two Cases
2010Co-Authors: Ulf Melin, Karin AxelssonAbstract:This paper compares inter-Organizational (IO) interaction and inter-Organizational information systems (IOS) in public and private sector. The purpose of the paper is to explore differences and similarities between e-government and e-business focusing IOS and interaction. This is done in order to facilitate learning between the two fields. The point of departure is two case studies performed in private vs. public sectors. A comparative study is made using IO concepts from industrial markets that characterize an IO relationship (continuity, complexity, symmetry, and formality) and concepts that describe dimensions of such relationships (links, bonds, and ties). The results from the comparative study show that there are several similarities concerning interaction in relations between organizations in the two sectors. There are also differences depending on the level of analysis (empirical level vs. analytical level). The study shows the need to be explicit regarding Organizational Value, end-customer or client/citizen Value and the type of objects that are exchanged in the interaction.

Organizational Values: The Inside View of Service Productivity

Brent Ritchie, Wilf ZerbeAbstract:Abstract In this study, we examined relations between Organizational Value systems and the productivity of service workers. Research was conducted in 92 service firms to construct an empirical taxonomy of Organizational Value systems based on the content focus of Values, and the resulting taxonomy was used as a framework to examine the relationship between Value system types and individual productivity, conceptualized in terms of job-related behaviors, attachment, and affect. Four Value system types were identified, and, as predicted, were shown to be differentially associated with all three ingredients of service productivity. These findings indicate the importance of the Value system as a marketing and management tool, and underscore the need for services managers to determine the behavioral and psychological responses that define productive performance in their organizations and to diagnose and develop the Value systems that will reinforce them.

This infrastructure is the base for realizing the “Industrie 4.0” paradigm aiming for collaborative industrial processes involving smart objects and smart factories. In inter-Organizational Value networks, a cyber-physical system platform becomes a shared resource that has to be managed cooperatively along its lifecycle. This paper looks at cyber-physical system platforms from a lifecycle perspective. It describes the complexity of networks of cyber-physical systems and cyber-physical system platforms within Value networks and the resulting restrictions influencing their various lifecycles. A selection of different lifecycle models from literature is reviewed to extract aspects that provide a promising basis for the development of a specific lifecycle model of cyber-physical system platforms.
