    Abstract The Organolithium Compound L i(THF) 2 {C(SiMe 3 ) 2 (SiMe 2 N Me2)} reacted with one equivalent of MnCl2 to give [ Mn(μ-Cl){C(SiMe 3 ) 2 (SiMe 2 N Me2)}]2 (4) and with 0.5 equivalent of MnCl2 to give Mn{C(SiMe3)2(SiMe2NMe2)}2 together with a small amount of the MnIII Compound [ Mn(μ-O){C(SiMe 3 ) 2 (SiMe 2 N Me2)}]2 (6) formed by adventitious admission of air. With CoBr2, the Compound [ Co(μ-Br){C(SiMe 3 ) 2 (SiMe 2 N Me2)}]2 (7) was obtained. The reaction between the lithium Compound Li(THF) 2 {C(SiMe 3 ) 2 (SiMe 2 O Me)} and MnCl2 in THF gave [ Mn(THF)(μ-Cl){C(SiMe 3 ) 2 (SiMe 2 O Me)}]2 (5). The crystal structures of Compounds 4, 5, 6 and 7 were determined. Compounds 4 and 5 are the first manganese analogues of Grignard reagents containing MnC σ-bonds to be characterised in the solid state.

    Abstract:

    Treatment of the Compound (Me3Si)3CCl with ICI followed by MeOH–Et3N gave the methoxy-derivative [(MeO)Me2Si]3CCl. This reacted with LiBun at –78 °C to give [(MeO)Me2Si]3CLi 3, which was used to prepare the Compounds SiMe2X{C[SiMe2(OMe)]3}(X = H, Cl, OCOCF3 or NCO) and SiPh2H{C[SiMe2(OMe)]3}. An X-ray diffraction study has shown that in the solid state the lithium Compound 3 is dimeric, with the carbanionic fragments bound by two oxygen atoms to one lithium and by carbon and the third oxygen to the other. The Li–C bond [2.401(9)A] is longer than usual and the C–SiMe2(OMe) bonds [mean 1.805(4)A] are short.
