  • OVERPRESSURE PETROLEUM SYSTEM ANALYSIS
    International Journal of Engineering, 2019
    Co-Authors: Asri Jaya, Adi Tonggiroh
    Abstract:

The understanding of pore pressure prediction is really useful to defined drilling strategy for efficiency timing and cost. Drilling phase, mud weight program, drilling bit are simply example will be helpful by this application method. However more data were taken already from existing well drilled, sometime this method is missed to reduce hazard from well due to reservoir pressure unpredictable. Optimized this method will be great full to apply in Mahakam Delta with highly uncertainty of reservoir existing. By calculate Normal Compaction trend, Overburden Gradient which are generate from existing well logging data around this area research, such as log gamma ray, resistivity, density and rare of sonic also drilling parameter are commonly used. Those are will be related with this method’s application. Pore prediction value can be justified from direct measurement from reservoir which is come from MDT and production well. Both are included post mortem data and will figure out characteristic of reservoir. More phenomena can be founded while drilling at Mahakam Delta, one of the most phenomena is high pressure zone that can be found at particular area. Now days before drilled a well on drilling program must be there is a pressure profile, it used to be a guiding on drilling strategy. Thesis was made to analysis pressure distribution in northern area of research area compared with drilling event.  By known direction of each of well nearby candidate well to drilled, geologist can be make analysis for geological prognosis well. Filtered surrounding well will be done after a geological analysis was made. Keyword: pore pressure, normal compaction trend, Overburden Gradient, overpressure

  • Overpressure Petroleum System Analysis Northern Area Field ‘’X’’ East Kalimantan
    International Journal of Engineering, 2019
Co-Authors: D. P. Battu, Asri Jaya, Adi Tonggiroh
    Abstract:

Analysis method of overpressure was known in dilling operation to obtain drilling strategy information. Mahakam Deltaic as main giant gas producer in Indonesia specially located on northern area was studied to gain information about pressure profile area. Analysis Normal Compaction, Overburden Gradient using Eaton and Bower’s method from wireline data is used to define pressure profile. Correlation with drilling event hopefully could established the prediction of pressure profile while drilling without supporting from wireline data.  Three pressurre profile area  has been detected by combination log data and drilling event which are top lower pressure signature by high gas, transition zone signature by occured gas cut mud due to high gas and hard ovepressure signature by issued well control.

  • Pre-drill Well Gradients Estimation using Seismic Data
    2020
    Co-Authors: Domingos Joao Jorge
    Abstract:

The need to have an estimation of pore Gradient, fracture Gradient and Overburden Gradient prior to drilling a new well is essentially a key requirement to well planners. When planning to drill a new well, the prediction of well Gradients consisting of pore, fracture and Overburden Gradient can be effectively made using data from offset wells such as well logs and drilling parameters. However, when considering drilling a wildcat well in a new area with no offset wells in the surrounding, the estimation of well Gradients becomes critical. Drilling in an unknown area with no knowledge of the subsurface pressure distribution poses a great risk to operators economically and operationally. Hence to reduce the risk associated with wildcat wells, this project employs seismic data (two-way time and average velocity) to estimate the pre-drill well Gradients from a developed C++ computer program. Pre-drill well Gradients estimated from seismic data will provide a good background concerning the formation pressures and possible overpressured zones to be encountered during drilling operations. This will prompt the drilling engineer to design a safe and sound mud weight and casing program that will effectively enable the operator to drill a wildcat well with minimum risk. Sophisticated drilling software such as Drillworks, WellCheck and Landmark are used to transform seismic data into pressure Gradients; however obtaining the license for a given software suite is difficult and expensive.

  • A Pre-drill Computer Model for Predicting Post-drill Well Gradients
    ICIPEG 2016, 2017
    Co-Authors: T. N. Ofei, Domingos Joao Jorge
    Abstract:

Drilling wildcat or exploration wells without the knowledge of the well Gradients (pore Gradient, fracture Gradient, and Overburden Gradient) poses a great risk to operators economically and operationally. This project proposes a simple but robust computer model for predicting pre-drill well Gradients. Two-way time (TWT) and average velocity (AV) from a field seismic data were adopted in the model development. Results obtained from the pre-drill well Gradient model were validated against post-drill well Gradient data from three wells in the same field. A very good statistical agreement between the pre-drill model and the post-drill field data was achieved. The pre-drill model predicted the post-drill Gradient data with mean absolute percent error (MAPE) from 4.64 to 6.23%, thus indicating the robustness of the proposed model. Similarly, regression success index, R2, values between the pre-drill and post-drill well Gradient data ranged from 0.830 to 0.985 for all datasets (DS1), (DS2), and (DS3). Information from this study is very essential in making better and sound decisions about mud weight design and casing program before drilling wildcat wells especially in deep offshore environment where there is a narrow window between the pore and fracture Gradients.

  • The Double Edged Sword: The Impact of the Interaction between Salt and Sediment on Subsalt Exploration Risk in Deep Water
    2020
    Co-Authors: Selim Shaker
    Abstract:

The high rewards of finding hydrocarbons in subsalt plays in the deepwater minibasins and frontier salt toe belts make them very attractive target for exploration endeavors. However, complex subsurface geopressure can cause hydrocarbon breaches and recurrent drilling challenges that drastically increase the operation costs. Lithology and maximum principal stress essentially control the subsurface geopressure profile development. Salt's low density is responsible for retarding the Overburden Gradient below the salt and, conversely, enhancing it above the salt. The salt's ductile nature substantially dictates the path and magnitude of the subsurface stress cage. Consequently, it impacts the integrity of the sealing caps and hydrocarbon's retention capacity. Newly developed supra- and subsalt geopressure models were established based on several fields and dry holes data in the Gulf of Mexico. In each case history, these models substantiate the premise that the impact of interaction between salt and sediment is an essential part of risk assessment and post-drilling appraisal.
