  • Two Types of Regulatory Competition: Competitive Federalism Versus Reflexive Harmonisation. A Law and Economics Perspective on Centros
Cambridge Yearbook of European Legal Studies, 1999
    Co-Authors: Simon Deakin
    Abstract:

There is a growing debate about the desirability of allowing greater scope for regulatory competition inside the European Union. The argument for doing so is that competition between the Member States in the production of legal rules will lead to greater economic efficiency than can be achieved through the harmonisation of standards. The Court’s ruling inCentrosappears to mark a significant move in the direction of inter-state competition in company law. In deciding that a company founded by Danish citizens in the UK, thereby avoiding Danish minimum capital requirements, could not be denied the right to register an Overseas Branch in Denmark for the purposes of trading there, the Court has rekindled a long-running debate about thesiège réeldoctrine.

  • From mise en valeur to cooperation – Ponts-et-Chaussées engineers Overseas and the rise of planning expertise in the twentieth century
    Planning Perspectives, 2017
    Co-Authors: Hélène Vacher
    Abstract:

By shedding light on the Overseas Branch of the Corps des Ponts-et-Chaussees (CPC), this article analyses the scientific and technical contribution of this sub-group of engineers in the post-Second World War era. After introducing the historical background of the early involvement of the CPC in the French colonies, this paper concentrates on the late colonial period. Details of the strong interconnectedness of metropolitan and Overseas technical expertise are provided. It is shown that civil engineering practised Overseas not only enhanced many technical fields within the traditional preserve of the Corps but also facilitated the rapid expansion of the Corps out of this very preserve. Engineers were prompt in including urban expertise and town planning, rural hydraulic and hydrogeology within their current field of activities. Consequences were highly significant not only for Overseas urban and rural milieu, but also for metropolitan territories undergoing post-war redevelopment. The last section ...

  • The Jeep is Here to Stay! Projections of America and Franco-American Relations During World War II
    ScholarWorks@UNO, 2020
    Co-Authors: Gentry, Connie L
    Abstract:

During World War II, the Office of War Information produced American and Allied propaganda that was used at home and abroad. Robert Riskin, head of the Bureau of Motion Pictures Overseas Branch, was responsible for creating Projections of America, a documentary film series made to introduce foreigners to America whilst combating negative impressions of Americans that arose in the interwar years. Films from Projections of America contained themes of American culture, ideology, industry and technology, and democracy. In France, these films were used to sway French opinion of Americans while promoting friendship and appreciation for American culture. Ultimately, the films served to prepare the French for the oncoming American occupation. This paper will argue that the Projections of America film series and its use in France successfully promoted American culture while also negating negative perceptions of Americans during World War II
