  • Biopolymer Coatings on Paper Packaging Materials
Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, 2010
Co-Authors: Khaoula Khwaldia, Elmira Arab-tehrany, Stéphane Desobry
    Abstract:

Increased environmental concerns over the use of certain synthetic Packaging and coatings in com- bination with consumer demands for both higher quality and longer shelf life have led to increased interest in al- ternative Packaging Materials research. Naturally renewable biopolymers can be used as barrier coatings on paper Packaging Materials. These biopolymer coatingsmayretard unwantedmoisture transfer in food products, are good oxygen and oil barriers, are biodegradable, and have potential to replace current synthetic paper and paperboard coatings. Incorporation of antimicrobial agents in coatings to produce active paper Packaging Materials provides an attractive option forprotecting food frommicroorganismdevelopment and spread. The barrier, mechanical, and otherpropertiesofbiopolymer-coatedpaper are reviewed.Existing andpotential applications for bioactive coatings on paper Packaging Materials are discussedwith examples.

  • Life-cycle evaluation of Packaging Materials
Proceedings of the 1993 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment, 1
    Co-Authors: K.g. Shapiro
    Abstract:

Tellus Institute has recently completed a study of Packaging Materials which, unlike previous LCAs (life cycle assessments), considers the differing impacts of environmental releases. A ranking scheme was developed that accounts for the varying health impacts of emissions released from all stages of Packaging material production and disposal. The results of the Tellus study are presented. The results of this work will lay out an approach to assist both policy makers and consumers to make informed decisions regarding Packaging Materials. >

  • Review on metal Packaging: Materials, forms, food applications, safety and recyclability
Journal of Food Science and Technology, 2019
Co-Authors: Gaurav Kr Deshwal, Narender Raju Panjagari
    Abstract:

Metal based Packaging Materials provide excellent barrier properties and hence, being used widely in food Packaging applications. They are used in different package forms and also as closures such as for glass bottles and composite cans. Major health and product safety concerns of metal Packaging comprise migration of bisphenol A, lead, cadmium, mercury, aluminium, iron, nickel, bulging of cans, tin dissolution, blackening and corrosion. Metals are not inert to food products, hence coated with protective lacquers to prevent metal–food interaction and migration of metal components. Metal Packaging Materials have lower global warming potential and higher recyclability due to their magnetic properties which helps in easier segregation. An attempt has been made in this article to review the metal Packaging Materials used in food industry and Indian Standard specifications, their safety and recyclability aspects.

  • Characterizing the environmental impact of Packaging Materials for express delivery via life cycle assessment
    Journal of Cleaner Production, 2020
Co-Authors: Huabo Duan, Zinuo Wang, Guanghan Song, Peng Kang, Dongjie Chen
    Abstract:

Abstract E-commerce industry is escalating at an unprecedented pace, which has led to the rapid growth of online shopping and the prosperity of express delivery service. However, there is increasing concern on the waste of the large amount of Packaging Materials from the express delivery sector, which has not been well documented in China, as well as many other countries. This paper employs the life cycle assessment method to quantify the implicit environmental impacts (measured by carbon dioxide equivalents, CO2e) of Packaging Materials’ raw material production (embodied impact), boxes/bags manufacturing, and end-of-life stages, and then evaluates their reduction potentials. The results indicate that the waste of express delivery Packaging Materials has surged from 0.2 million metric tons (Mt) in 2007 to 9.2 ± 5% Mt in 2018 in China. Consequently, the total CO2e from Packaging Materials’ overall life has soared from 0.3 Mt in 2007 to 13.2 ± 5% Mt in 2018. Raw Materials’ embodied impact, manufacturing process, and end-of-life phases account for 68.4%, 18.8%, and 12.7%, respectively. Our scenario-based analysis implies there are great opportunities to reduce Packaging Materials consumed and then mitigate their impact. These preliminary findings could not only help to better understand the impact of Packaging Materials for the express delivery sector but also inform evidence-based policymaking of green development in China’s express delivery industry and beyond.
