learn from thy neighbor Parallel Chain and regional adaptive mcmc
Journal of the American Statistical Association, 2009Co-Authors: Radu V Craiu, Jeffrey S Rosenthal, Chao YangAbstract:Starting with the seminal paper of Haario, Saksman and Tamminen (Haario et al. (2001)), a substantial amount of work has been done to validate adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms. In this paper we focus on two practical aspects of adaptive Metropolis samplers. First, we draw attention to the deficient performance of standard adaptation when the target distribution is multi-modal. We propose a Parallel Chain adaptation strategy that incorporates multiple Markov Chains which are run in Parallel. Second, we note that

Parallel Chain optical transmission line for a low loss ultraconfined light beam
Physical Review B, 2009Co-Authors: Andrea Alu, Pavel A Belov, Nader EnghetaAbstract:Linear arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles have been suggested by various groups as optical waveguides. Here, inspired by the concept of optical nanocircuits, we show that it is possible to improve the performance of such waveguide Chains by pairing two of them, forming a two-wire optical transmission line. We show that choosing the operation regime near the light line may greatly reduce the effect of material absorption and disorder, still allowing field confinement in between the paired Chains. Application for low-loss optical interconnects and subwavelength imaging devices are envisioned.
