Parameter Passing between molecular dynamics and continuum models for droplets on solid substrates the static case
Journal of Chemical Physics, 2013Co-Authors: Nikita Tretyakov, Marcus Muller, Desislava Todorova, Uwe ThieleAbstract:We study equilibrium properties of polymer films and droplets on a solid substrate employing particle-based simulation techniques (molecular dynamics) and a continuum description. Parameter-Passing techniques are explored that facilitate a detailed comparison of the two models. In particular, the liquid-vapor, solid-liquid, and solid-vapor interface tensions, and the Derjaguin or disjoining pressure are determined by molecular dynamics simulations. This information is then introduced into continuum descriptions accounting for (i) the full curvature and (ii) a long-wave approximation of the curvature (thin film model). A comparison of the dependence of the contact angle on droplet size indicates that the theories agree well if the contact angles are defined in a compatible manner.

The tutor helps students better understand these Parameter Passing mechanisms by administering problems for them to solve and providing instant feedback on their solution. In this paper, we will describe the design and features of the tutor. We will also discuss a test that we conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of using the tutor, and present its results. The test confirmed our hypothesis that using the tutor would result in a systematic improvement in the learning of our students. This tutor may be used in the Comparative Programming Languages course as well as Computer Science I.

Formal Methods, 1993Co-Authors: Wolfgang ReifAbstract:This paper presents an alternative approach to loose specifications of Parameterized data types. The specification language is full first-order logic, and the semantics is a particular class of functions, mapping Parameter algebras to (Parameter generated) target algebras. We investigate monomorphicity and correctness of Parameterized first-order specifications, and present simple syntactic criteria for these notions. Furthermore, correctness of standard Parameter Passing is studied. We give a characterization as well as a simple sufficient criterion for specifications with correct Parameter Passing. Finally, the interaction between Parameter Passing and correctness of specifications is investigated: We present conditions under which actualization of Parameterized specifications preserves the correctness of the constituent specifications.
