    Abstract:

    The association of contiguous or 'collision' tumours in the same biopsy specimen is not uncommon and is often reported in the literature. The most common association, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and naevus, is very difficult to diagnose clinically. We describe a 38-year-old woman with a previous history of melanoma, who presented with a modified pigmented lesion of the hip that had begun to change 6 months earlier. Histologically, the lesion was a melanocytic compound naevus and a BCC with a seborrhoeic keratosis. The Case was investigated clinically and by focusing on the dermoscopic features and their Pathological correlates. Cutaneous collision tumours are extremely difficult to diagnose preoperatively, even with the help of dermoscopy, in particular when one of the lesions is melanocytic.

    Abstract:

    We report a Case of three distinct adnexal neoplasms associated with a naevus sebaceous of the scalp: a nodular pigmented trichoblastoma, a smaller flat pigmented trichoblastoma and a syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and discuss the clinical and histological features of these neoplasms. The clinical manifestation was suggestive of malignant melanoma, a feature that has never been reported before. For the first time in the literature we describe the Case also by means of a noninvasive analysis, i.e. epiluminescence microscopy. In our experience, epiluminescence microscopy does not appear to be more diagnostically accurate than simple clinical examination when diagnosing lesions of the scalp, contrary to other regions.

    Abstract:

    The authors describe a Case of synchronously occurring (double) tumours, i.e. primary hepatocellular carcinoma and aortic body chemodectoma in a 14-year-old mixed-breed male dog. The tumours were identified during necropsy, following euthanasia. In the last months of its life, the dog showed signs of weakness, anorexia, apathy, inactivity, and abdominal palpation elicited a painful reaction. The primary liver cancer emerged in the left lateral lobe without evidence of any distant metastases. HistoPathological and immunohistochemical investigations revealed a well-differentiated, trabecular, claudin-7-, claudin-5- and pancytokeratin-negative hepatocellular carcinoma. The Ki-67 proliferation index was 33%. During necropsy, a synchronously occurring benign, grade I type aortic body chemodectoma was also detected in the dog. This neuroendocrine tumour showed chromogranin-, synaptophysin-, neuron-specific enolase- and S100 protein-positivity, and the Ki-67 proliferation index was 2%.     Abstract:

    This study presents a rare Case of compound paraganglioma/ganglioneuroma with comprehensive immunohistochemical studies that reveal strong cytokeratin expression in all components. A 74-year-old woman presented with a mass lesion of the cauda equina. The 1.8-cm tumor showed 3 histomorphologically and immunohistochemically distinct components: typical paragangliomatous neuroendocrine areas, mature ganglion cell-like neuronal areas, and a "neuromatous" proliferation of Schwann cells with admixed axons. As often seen in cauda equina paragangliomas, the neuroendocrine cells were cytokeratin-positive. In addition, immunoreactivity for cytokeratins was also observed in the neurons and axons. This tumor illustrates the broad spectrum of divergent differentiation that can be seen in cells of sympathoadrenal lineage.
