  • Billet quality assessments and investigation of fine oxides in 6000 series VDC cast product
    Light Metals, 2006
    Co-Authors: Malcolm J. Couper, B. Rinderer, B. Cumerford
    Abstract:

The assessment of homogenised billet quality is routinely carried out for random samples from a range of billet diameters and alloys produced in the casthouse. The results of the assessments are tracked to confirm quality and process control. The laboratory evaluation includes ultrasonic and dye Penetrant Testing for inclusions and defects, hardness, macro-etching for grain size, segregation and chill zone, as well as microstructural examination of intermetallics and precipitates at the surface, mid-radius and centre of the slices. Examples of evaluations and the quality monitoring are presented as well as results of an investigation into the occurrence of inclusion defects resulting from cast start.

  • Fluorescent Penetrant Testing by Means of Excilamps
    Materials Science Forum, 2019
Co-Authors: Aleksey Kalinichenko, N. P. Kalinichenko, Eduard A. Sosnin, Sergey P. Avdeev, Irina S. Lobanova
    Abstract:

The paper provides a brief review of modern sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation used in fluorescent Penetrant Testing (FT). The differences in implementation of the method with different radiation sources (excilamps, mercury UV lamp and LED UV lamp) are revealed experimentally. It is shown that the XeCl excilamp is not inferior to other sources of UV radiation used in FT.

  • Comparison of the Quality of Flaw Detection Materials Using Samples Developed for Liquid Penetrant Testing
    Materials Science Forum, 2019
    Co-Authors: Alexey N. Kalinichenko, Irina S. Lobanova, N. P. Kalinichenko
    Abstract:

The paper addresses the issues of subjective and instrumental quality assessment of flaw detection materials by Sherwin, Bycotest, Spotcheck, Chemetall and R-test Penetrant materials using non-metallic test panels and software code.

  • Possibility of Using Nonmetallic Check Samples to Assess the Sensitivity of Penetrant Testing
IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2016
    Co-Authors: N. P. Kalinichenko, Irina S. Lobanova, Aleksey Kalinichenko, E. L. Loboda, T Jakubec
    Abstract:

Versions of check sample manufacturing for Penetrant inspection are considered. A statistical analysis of crack width measuring for nonmetallic samples is performed to determine the possibility of their application to assess the Penetrant Testing sensitivity.

  • The Method of Manufacturing Nonmetallic Test-Blocks on Different Sensitivity Classes
Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2016
    Co-Authors: N. P. Kalinichenko, Irina S. Lobanova, Aleksey Kalinichenko, A. A. Zaitseva, E. L. Loboda
    Abstract:

Nowadays in our modern world there is a vital question of quality control of details made from nonmetallic materials due to their wide spreading. Nondestructive Penetrant Testing is effective, and in some cases it is the only possible method of accidents prevention at high- risk sites. A brief review of check sample necessary for quality evaluation of Penetrant materials is considered. There was offered a way of making agents for quality of Penetrant materials Testing according to different liquid Penetrant Testing sensibility classes.

  • Universal Reference Test Blocks for Liquid Penetrant Testing
    Key Engineering Materials, 2016
    Co-Authors: N. P. Kalinichenko, Irina S. Lobanova, Aleksey Kalinichenko, A. A. Zaitseva
    Abstract:

The overview of Penetrant Testing quality control is considered. Disadvantages of methods of manufacturing metal check samples are identify, e.g. the implementation of several defects of different sensitivity classes on a single sample. The paper addresses the technology of application of universal nonmetallic reference test blocks containing several artificially-induced defects in the form of cracks of different sensitivity classes for liquid Penetrant Testing to evaluate the performance of liquid Penetrant Testing.

  • Vacuum Intensification of Filling Defects with Penetrants under Liquid-Penetrant Testing
Russian Journal of Nondestructive Testing, 2019
    Co-Authors: N. V. Delenkovskii, A. B. Gnusin
    Abstract:

The vacuum intensification of the process of filling defects in stainless steel and glass samples with Penetrants under liquid-Penetrant Testing has been studied experimentally. Results indicate a high efficiency of vacuum impregnation with small amounts of Penetrants on tested surfaces, especially when detecting flaws with openings of 1–3 μm. It has been established that the sensitivity of Testing is increased by 30–100% compared with the traditional technique.

  • Estimating the depth of surface flaws by Penetrant Testing
Russian Journal of Nondestructive Testing, 2017
    Co-Authors: N. V. Delenkovsky, A. B. Gnusin
    Abstract:

Experimental dependences are provided for the time growth of the areas of the indications of surface dead-end and through flaws with openings of 1–15 μm and depths of up to 12 mm during development under Penetrant Testing of stainless steel samples. A technique is proposed for estimating the depth of the surface flaws using the first derivative of the dependences 100 s after the beginning of development.
