Four well-characterised species, Peptostreptococcus asaccharolyticus, Pepto-streptococcus indolicus, Peptostreptococcus lacrimalis and Peptostreptococcus harei form a homogeneous group of species but differ so markedly from the type species of the genus, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, that they warrant placement in a separate genus. We propose that these species, Peptostreptococcus asaccharolyticus, Peptostreptococcus indolicus, Peptostreptococcus lacrimalis andPeptostreptococcus harei be reclassified in a new genus, Schleiferella, as Schleiferella asaccharolytica comb. nov., Schleiferella indolica comb. nov., Schleiferella lacrimalis comb. nov. and Schleiferella harei comb. nov.

Two of the most well studied species, Peptostreptococcus magnus and Peptostreptococcus micros, differ significantly in both genetic and phenotypic characteristics from each other and from the type species of the genus, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius. Therefore, we propose thatPeptostreptococcus magnus be reclassified in a new genus, Finegoldia, as Finegoldia magna; we propose that Peptostreptococcus micros be reclassified in new genus, Micromonas, as Micromonas micros.

LeoncioAbstract:Pexiganan, a cationic peptide, exhibited a broad range of anti-anaerobic antimicrobial activity. The MIC90s of studied isolates were as follows: Bacteroides fragilis, 16 μg/ml; other B. fragilis group spp., 4 μg/ml; Prevotella and Fusobacterium spp., 32 μg/ml; Porphyromonas spp., 64 μg/ml; Propionibacterium acnes, 4 μg/ml; Eggerthella lenta and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, 32 μg/ml; other Gram-positive rods and cocci, 4 μg/ml; Clostridium perfringens, 128 μg/ml; and other clostridia, 256 μg/ml. Pexiganan cream shows potential as adjunctive therapy for skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs) involving anaerobes.

ApplemanAbstract:Abstract Using an agar dilution method, we determined the in vitro activity of oritavancin, vancomycin, clindamycin and metronidazole against 114 unique clinical isolates of Gram-positive anaerobes. MIC90s (μg/mL) for oritavancin were as follows: Clostridium perfringens 1.0, Propionibacterium acnes 0.25, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius 0.25, Peptoniphilus asaccharolyticus 0.5, Finegoldia magna 0.25, Micromonas. micros 0.25, and Anaerococcus prevotii 0.25. On a weight basis, oritavancin is slightly more active than vancomycin against the strains tested. The oritavancin MICs are comparable to those previously reported against staphylococci and enterococci. Oritavancin shows excellent potential for treatment of infections containing Gram-positive anaerobes such as these.
