Physiological correlates of growth and condition in the yellow perch (Perca flavescens).

Campbell, Patrice CoutureAbstract:This study on yellow perch (Perca flavescens) examines a series of enzymatic markers and the relative weights of pyloric caeca and visceral lipids, their response to changes in feeding regime and their potential use to infer recent changes in growth rate and fish condition. Fish were exposed to four different feeding regimes for 12 weeks resulting in specific growth rates ranging from 0.3% to 3.5% (%/day). Growth and condition responded rapidly to changes in ration and the weight of pyloric caeca and visceral lipids reflected increased feed intake. Growth rate was correlated with muscle citrate synthase and caecal nucleoside-diphosphate kinase activities, whereas condition was correlated with muscle citrate synthase and lactate dehydrogenase activities and with caecal glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity. Results showed that enzyme activities and biometric parameters responded rapidly to increased feed intake, but the response was slower when food intake decreased. Plateaus were attained for both condition and visceral lipid index, but the relative weight of pyloric caeca continued to increase throughout the experimental period. Results from this study could, in principle, be used to infer recent growth and energy status in wild yellow perch and thus provide an indicator of food availability in their environment.

Winds and the demic structure of a population of yellow perch (Perca flavescens)

NewsomeAbstract:Variations in year-class strengths of populations of fish are often attributed to environmental effects such as wind or temperature. Previously, we have presented evidence showing that the yellow perch (Perca flavescens) in a lake are composed of demes or subpopulations that vary independently. Here, we explore the relationship between winds from different directions and the independent variations of the demes of yellow perch in the study lake. We present a model that includes an instantaneous rate of mortality due to winds during the embryonic stage of yellow perch. The variables used to explain the observed egg-mass counts and thus the variations in the size of the demes are lagged egg-mass counts and winds, each of which varies yearly. Using wind and egg-mass census data, we were able to find statistically significant models that explain much of the variation (52–61%) in the independently varying demes (four of six investigated) of yellow perch in our study lake. Composition of farmed and wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens)

CraigAbstract:Abstract This study was carried out to determine if there were differences in the chemical, physical and sensorial properties between wild and farmed yellow perch. Fillets from farmed yellow perch (Perca flavescens) fed with a commercial diet were compared to wild yellow perch fillets from the Great Lakes of the United States. Mineral, fatty acid and amino acid contents, proximate composition, texture, color and sensory analyses were determined for both treatments. The data were subjected to one-way ANOVA using the statistical analysis system (SAS). Fat content of farmed yellow perch was significantly higher, while protein content was significantly lower, than wild yellow perch. A variety of fatty acids was significantly different between wild and farmed yellow perch. For example, arachidonic acid (20:4 n-6) was significantly higher (P⩽0.05) in wild yellow perch fillets; however, no significant differences were found in the total amount of n-3 fatty acids (30% of total fatty acids). Docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 n-3, DHA) was the predominant fatty acid in both treatments. Shear force (total energy/g (J/g)) was higher (P⩽0.05) in wild yellow perch fillets. Color (L*, a* and b* values) also was significantly different between the two treatments. However, no significant differences were found in flavor between wild and farmed yellow perch.
