Methods A population-based, random telephone survey was performed during the peak of the third wave of COVID-19 outbreak (27/07/2020 to 27/08/2020) in Hong Kong. All adults aged ≥ 18 years were eligible. The survey included sociodemographic details; self-report health conditions; trust scales; and self-reported health outcomes. Multivariable regression analyses were applied to examine independent associations. The primary outcome is the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine. Results We conducted 1200 successful telephone interviews (response rate 55%). The overall vaccine acceptance rate after adjustment for population distribution was 37.2% (95% C.I. 34.5–39.9%). The projected acceptance rates exhibited a “J-shaped” pattern with age, with higher rates among young adults (18–24 years), then increased linearly with age. Multivariable regression analyses revealed that Perceived severity, Perceived benefits of the vaccine, cues to action, self-reported health outcomes, and trust in healthcare system or vaccine manufacturers were positive correlates of acceptance; whilst Perceived access barriers and harm were negative correlates. Remarkably, Perceived Susceptibility to infection carried no significant association, whereas recommendation from Government (aOR = 10.2, 95% C.I. 6.54 to 15.9, p Conclusions Governmental recommendation is an important driver, whereas Perceived Susceptibility is not associated with acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine. These HBM constructs and independent predictors inform evidence-based formulation and implementation of vaccination strategies.

Children and Youth Services Review, 2020Co-Authors: Joseph LauAbstract:Abstract The present study investigated the prevalence of psychoactive substance use and intention, and identified factors associated with psychoactive substance use and intention among 255 non-engaged youth (NEY) in Hong Kong based on the Health Belief Model. Findings showed that the prevalence of ever use of psychoactive substance and use in the last year was 13.7% and 8.6% respectively. Multivariate analyses revealed that Perceived Susceptibility to psychoactive substance use and cues to action were significant risk factors, while Perceived barrier about the high cost of psychoactive substances was a protective factor of ever use of psychoactive substances among all participants (N = 255). In addition, cues to action was a significant risk factor while Perceived barrier about worry of being arrested was a protective factor of intention to use psychoactive substances among those who have never used psychoactive substances (N = 220). Health Belief Model could be a useful framework for designing anti-drug program for NEY.

Acceptability of HPV vaccines and associations with perceptions related to HPV and HPV vaccines among men who have sex with men in Hong Kong.

LaiAbstract:HPV vaccines are available to men but there are few studies investigating the acceptability of HPV vaccines among men who have sex with men (MSM), a high risk group. We assessed the intention to take up HPV vaccines among MSM in Hong Kong and the associated factors related to cognitions on HPV and HPV vaccines, basing on the Health Belief Model (n = 542). The acceptability of HPV vaccines was 20% (unconditional on efficacies and price), 29.2% (conditional on efficacies and market price), 51.7% (conditional on efficacies and discounted price) and 79.1% (conditional on efficacies and free price). Adjusting for background variables, composite scores of Perceived Susceptibility, Perceived severity, Perceived barriers and cue to actions were significantly associated with acceptability of HPV vaccines conditional on specific efficacies and the market price. Acceptability of HPV vaccines was highly price sensitive. Future studies need to use conditional measures. Implementation and translational researches are warranted.

BryanAbstract:Objective This study sought to experimentally manipulate the core constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in order to compare the success of interventions to increase preparatory condom use behavior (i.e., purchasing condoms, talking to a boyfriend or girlfriend about using condoms, and carrying condoms) based on these theories. Method A total of 258 participants were randomly assigned to one of three computer-based interventions (HBM, TPB, or information-only control). A total of 204 (79.1%) completed follow-up assessments 1 month later. Results Regression analyses were conducted to determine which set of theoretical constructs accounted for the most variance in behavior at baseline. A series of structural equation models were estimated to determine which constructs were the "active ingredients" of change. The TPB accounted for 32.8% of the variance in risky sexual behavior at baseline, while the HBM only explained 1.6% of the variance. Mediational analyses revealed differential intervention effects on Perceived Susceptibility, Perceived benefits, and attitudes toward condom use. However, it was attitudes toward condom use and condom use self-efficacy that were associated with intentions, which then predicted preparatory condom use behavior at follow-up. Conclusion Except for attitudes, the mediators that were successfully manipulated by the interventions (i.e., Perceived Susceptibility, Perceived severity, and attitudes) were not the same constructs that predicted intentions (i.e., attitudes and condom use self-efficacy), and subsequently predicted behavior. This suggests that the constructs that explain behavior are not the same as those that produce behavior change.

BryanAbstract:SUMMARY Breast cancer is a significant health threat for women and is currently the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. When breast cancer is diagnosed early in the disease process, the probability of survival is quite high, but when diagnosis is made at a later stage, mortality increases dramatically. Thus, early detection is crucial, and monthly breast self-exam (BSE) is recommended for all women over the age of 20. Despite this recommendation, adherence to BSE guidelines is quite low. The current study investigated the role of Perceived Susceptibility to breast cancer as it relates to the performance of BSE among a sample of community women. As hypothesized, a significant interaction between Perceived Susceptibility and age was found such that Perceived Susceptibility was significantly positively related to BSE performance for older women but was not related to BSE performance among younger women. WestAbstract:A comprehensive model of the determinants of condom use among young women was developed tested and replicated with longitudinal folow-up to assess the predictive utility of the model for condom use over time. Participants in study 1 and study 2 were 198 female undergraduates of mean age 18.6 years and 238 female undergraduates of mean age 19.1 years respectively. 74-79% of the women were White and approximately 75% in both groups had ever experienced sexual intercourse. Among those ever having intercourse the mean age at first intercourse was 16.2-16.3 years and only 15% reported always using condoms. 64-66% reported condom use at first intercourse and 59-60% of all episodes of sexual intercourse overall involved condom use. 66% and 73% of the young women who had had intercourse had had more than one partner and 3-7% of all participants reported ever having a sexually transmitted disease. Acceptance of sexuality and control over the sexual encounter were related to a multidimensional measure of condom use self-efficacy which predicted condom use intentions. Perceived Susceptibility to sexually transmitted diseases was both directly related to intentions and indirectly related through Perceived benefits and attitudes about condom use. Intentions predicted subsequent reports of condom use.
