School health services and its practice among public and private primary schools in Western Nigeria

This study was therefore designed to determine the school health services available and its practices in primary schools in Ogun state, Western Nigeria. Methods The study was a comparative cross-sectional survey of private and public primary schools in Ogun state using a multi-stage sampling technique. Participants were interviewed using a structured, interviewer administered questionnaire and a checklist. Data collected was analyzed using the SPSS version 15.0. Results A total of 360 head teachers served as respondents for the study with the overall mean age of 45.7 ± 9.9 years. More than three quarters of the respondents in both groups could not correctly define the school health programme. There were no health personnel or a trained first aider in 86 (47.8 %) public and 110 (61.1 %) private schools but a nurse/midwife was present in 57 (31.7 %) and 27 (15.0 %) public and private schools. (χ^2 = 17.122, P = 0.002). In about 95 % of the schools, the teacher carried out routine inspection of the pupils while Periodic Medical Examination for staff and pupils was carried out in only 13 (7.2 %) public and 31 (17.2 %) private schools (χ^2 = 8.398, P = 0.004). A sick bay/clinic was present in 26 (14.4 %) and 67 (37.2 %) public and private schools respectively (χ^2 = 24.371, P = 0.001). The practice of school health programme was dependent on the age (χ^2 = 12.53, P = 0.006) and the ethnicity of the respondents (χ^2 = 6.330, P = 0.042). Using multivariate analysis only one variable (type of school) was found to be a predictor of school health programme. (OR 4.55, CI 1.918–10.79). Conclusion The study concludes that the practice of the various components of school health services was poor but better in private primary schools in Nigeria. Routine inspection by teachers was the commonest form of health appraisal. This may suggest that more health personnel need to be employed to cater for the health of the school children in Nigeria and other similar developing countries.

A simple, wide bandwidth, biopotential amplifier to record pacemaker pulse waveform

Many studies recommend ECG amplifiers with higher bandwidth to prevent errors. In the past, few pilot studies showed that analysis of pacemaker pulses waveform can enhance diagnosis (eg, lead failure and fractured wire), but they were carried out with inadequate instrumentations for clinical practice. Typically, pacemaker pulses last hundreds of microseconds, edges of pulses elapse in few microseconds, and amplitude may exhibit large variations from few millivolts to volts. Pulse waveforms change often and depend on pacemaker type and programming. A simple, biopotential amplifier made of a few off-the-shelf components is proposed. The circuit fulfills specifications for biopotential amplifiers and offers a large bandwidth (~1 MHz). Therefore, it is able to accurately record time course of pacemaker pulses and allows highly accurate pulse detection and timing. Signals can be easily displayed and acquired by means of a standard, battery-powered oscilloscope. Pacemaker pulse vectorcardiography can be obtained by using two or more, wideband channels. Some exemplificative waveforms recorded during patient’s Periodic Medical Examination are reported. The proposed circuit offers simultaneous conventional ECG signal as an additional output. Health disorders and safety measures among workers in Tanta Flax and Oil Company, Egypt

A cross sectional study was conducted in Tanta Flax and Oil Company in Egypt . The company includes eight factories which are divided into four departments according to the manufacturing end products. The study was conducted from August 2018 to December 2019 on 353 workers out of 400 workers. An interview questionnaire and clinical Medical Examination were done to assess the health status of exposed workers. Check list from occupational safety and health administration (OSHA) standards was filled by researcher to check safety measures in work place environment. Respiratory manifestations were detected in 65% of the examined workers in flax manufacturing departments while allergic manifestations were more obvious in formaldehyde factory department. Approximately one quarter of workers complained that personal protective equipment’s are not available. Regarding the mask for dust, nearly half (44.5%) of the workers rarely used them, and only 7.1% always use them. Byssinosis was obvious among workers in flax manufacturing and particle board manufacturing department with statistically significant differences between the four departments, in which 36.9% and 24.1% of workers in these two departments suffered from chest tightness, respectively. The safety measures were inadequate in flax manufacturing departments and to somewhat sufficient in formaldehyde factory department. Most of exposed workers had inadequate health status due to lack of standard safety measures. Therefore, Periodic Medical Examination should be done regularly with investigation of pulmonary functions of exposed workers with application of high level of safety measure standards in the work place environment.
