the relationship between housing characteristics emotional well being and the Personal Empowerment of psychiatric consumer survivors
Community Mental Health Journal, 1998Co-Authors: Geoffrey Nelson, G B Hall, Richard WalshbowersAbstract:In this research, we examine the relationshipsbetween the housing characteristics and dimensions ofcommunity adaptation for 107 psychiatricconsumer/survivors. Hypotheses about which housingcharacteristics best predict which dimensions of adaptationwere made based on previous research and theory. Usinga longitudinal research design, we found, aftercontrolling for demographic variables and prioradaptation, that the number of living companions, housingconcerns, and having a private room all significantlypredicted different dimensions of community adaptation. The findings partially support our theoretical expectations and illuminate the relationshipbetween physical, social and organizational aspects ofcommunity-based housing and the adaptation ofpsychiatric consumer/survivors. We discuss theimplications of the results for policy and practice inproviding housing for this population.

social networks social support Personal Empowerment and the adaptation of psychiatric consumers survivors path analytic models
Social Science & Medicine, 1996Co-Authors: Brent G Hall, Geoffrey NelsonAbstract:In this paper, we examine the relationships between social network characteristics, Personal Empowerment, social support, and adaptation of psychiatric consumer/survivors. Using path model analyses, we found that: (1) Personal Empowerment had statistically significant direct effects on positive affect, meaningful activity, and negative affect; (2) positive social support mediated the relationship between the proportion of women in consumer/survivors' networks and positive affect and meaningful activity; and (3) negative social interaction mediated the relationship between consumer/survivors' gender and negative affect. The results point out the importance of gender effects in social support processes, the differential association between type of social interaction (positive vs negative) and adaptation indices (positive vs negative), and the importance of Personal Empowerment for consumer/survivors' adaptation. We discuss the findings in terms of their implications for further research and community-based housing programmes for psychiatric consumer/survivors.

feasibility acceptability and preliminary effects of the cope online cognitive behavioral skill building program on mental health outcomes and academic performance in freshmen college students a randomized controlled pilot study
Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing, 2015Co-Authors: Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, Jacqueline Hoying, Megan Amaya, Laura A Szalacha, Tiffany Taylor, Kristen BowersoxAbstract:Problem Despite the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders in university students, few receive needed evidence-based treatment. Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and preliminary effects of a seven-session online cognitive-behavioral skill-building intervention (i.e., COPE, Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment) versus a comparison group on their anxiety, depressive symptoms, and grade performance. Methods A randomized controlled pilot study was conducted from September 2012 to May 2013 with 121 college freshmen enrolled in a required one credit survey course. Findings Although there were no significant differences in anxiety and depressive symptoms between the groups, only COPE students with an elevated level of anxiety at baseline had a significant decline in symptoms. Grade point average was higher in COPE versus comparison students. Evaluations indicated that COPE was a positive experience for students. Conclusions COPE is a promising brief intervention that can be integrated effectively into a required freshman course.

pediatric nurse practitioner management of child anxiety in a rural primary care clinic with the evidence based cope program
Journal of Pediatric Health Care, 2015Co-Authors: Jessica L Kozlowski, Pamela Lusk, Bernadette Mazurek MelnykAbstract:Abstract Introduction Anxiety is the most common mental health disorder in children. Many communities have shortages of mental health providers, and the majority of children with anxiety are not receiving the evidence-based treatment they need. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility and effects of a brief seven-session cognitive behavioral skills-building intervention, Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE), which was delivered to anxious children by a pediatric nurse practitioner in a primary care setting. Methods A pre-experimental, one-group, pretest and post-test design was used. Results Children who participated had a significant decrease in anxiety symptoms (13.88 points, SD = 17.96, 95% confidence interval [CI] = −1.13-28.89), as well as an increase in knowledge of cognitive-behavioral coping skills (M = 11.38, CI = 5.99-8.26, p = .00) and improved functioning (at school and at home). Evaluations by parents and children were positive. Discussion COPE is a promising evidence-based intervention for children with anxiety with feasible delivery by pediatric nurse practitioners in primary care.

improving the mental health healthy lifestyle choices and physical health of hispanic adolescents a randomized controlled pilot study
Journal of School Health, 2009Co-Authors: Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, Diana Jacobson, Stephanie Kelly, Judith Ohaver, Leigh Small, Mary Z MaysAbstract:BACKGROUND: Obesity and mental health disorders are 2 major public health problems in American adolescents, with prevalence even higher in Hispanic teens. Despite the rapidly increasing incidence and adverse health outcomes associated with overweight and mental health problems, very few intervention studies have been conducted with adolescents to improve both their healthy lifestyles and mental health outcomes. Even fewer studies have been conducted with Hispanic youth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the preliminary efficacy of the COPE (Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment) Healthy Lifestyles TEEN (Thinking, Emotions, Exercise, and Nutrition) program, a manualized educational and cognitive behavioral skills-building program, on Hispanic adolescents' healthy lifestyle choices as well as mental and physical health outcomes. METHODS: A cluster randomized controlled pilot study was conducted with 19 Hispanic adolescents enrolled in 2 health classes in a southwestern high school. One class received COPE and the other received an attention control program. RESULTS: Adolescents in the COPE program increased their healthy lifestyle choices and reported a decrease in depressive and anxiety symptoms from baseline to postintervention follow-up. A subset of 7 overweight adolescents in the COPE program had a decrease in triglycerides and an increase in high-density lipoproteins. In addition, these overweight adolescents reported increases in healthy lifestyle beliefs and nutrition knowledge along with a decrease in depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION: The COPE TEEN program is a promising school-based strategy for improving both physical and mental health outcomes in adolescents.

Destacamos a importância do apoio social e do fortalecimento da vinculação familiar no processo de enfrentamento da situação de denúncia de abuso, bem como a importância do apoio profissionalThe experience of sexual abuse accusations reverberates in the lives of the victims and the family, causing, for example, social withdrawal and embarrassment. However, little attention is given to the accused’s family. Considering that, this article aimed at reporting an experience part of the internship project “Support and Strengthening of Family Bonds”, in which psychosocial care was provided to Mrs. A (37 years old), wife of an accused of sexual abuse. A total of 25 individual meeting weekly were conducted lasting approximately 60 minutes each. Initially, issues related to the accusation were addressed; however, other topics emerged throughout the meetings. Hence, the meetings were divided into the following thematic blocks: (a) rapport and demand understanding; (b) interPersonal issues after the accusation; (c) strengthening of bonds; (d) Personal beliefs and identity; and (e) Personal Empowerment. The issues raised by the client were similar to those found in the literature regarding victims of sexual abuse family members, including feelings of social isolation and embarrassment. The accusation of child sexual abuse against the husband had a profound impact on several spheres of the client’s life. We conclude that qualified listening and psychosocial care are essential. We underscore the importance of systemically understanding the contexts and relationships in which not only the victims and the accused of violence are inserted but also their families. We call attention to the importance of social support and the strengthening of family ties in the process of coping with the abuse accusation, as well as the importance of professional support. The experience of sexual abuse accusations reverberates in the lives of the victims and the family, causing, for example, social withdrawal and embarrassment. the future of mental health care peer to peer support and social media
Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences, 2016Co-Authors: John A Naslund, Kelly A Aschbrenner, Lisa A Marsch, Stephen J BartelsAbstract:Aims: People with serious mental illness are increasingly turning to popular social media, including Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, to share their illness experiences or seek advice from others with similar health conditions. This emerging form of unsolicited communication among self-forming online communities of patients and individuals with diverse health concerns is referred to as peer-to-peer support. We offer a perspective on how online peer-to-peer connections among people with serious mental illness could advance efforts to promote mental and physical wellbeing in this group. Methods: In this commentary, we take the perspective that when an individual with serious mental illness decides to connect with similar others online it represents a critical point in their illness experience. We propose a conceptual model to illustrate how online peer-to-peer connections may afford opportunities for individuals with serious mental illness to challenge stigma, increase consumer activation and access online interventions for mental and physical wellbeing. Results: People with serious mental illness report benefits from interacting with peers online from greater social connectedness, feelings of group belonging and by sharing Personal stories and strategies for coping with day-to-day challenges of living with a mental illness. Within online communities, individuals with serious mental illness could challenge stigma through Personal Empowerment and providing hope. By learning from peers online, these individuals may gain insight about important health care decisions, which could promote mental health care seeking behaviours. These individuals could also access interventions for mental and physical wellbeing delivered through social media that could incorporate mutual support between peers, help promote treatment engagement and reach a wider demographic. Unforeseen risks may include exposure to misleading information, facing hostile or derogatory comments from others, or feeling more uncertain about one's health condition. However, given the evidence to date, the benefits of online peer-to-peer support appear to outweigh the potential risks. Conclusion: Future research must explore these opportunities to support and empower people with serious mental illness through online peer networks while carefully considering potential risks that may arise from online peer-to-peer interactions. Efforts will also need to address methodological challenges in the form of evaluating interventions delivered through social media and collecting objective mental and physical health outcome measures online. A key challenge will be to determine whether skills learned from peers in online networks translate into tangible and meaningful improvements in recovery, employment, or mental and physical wellbeing in the offline world.
