Visual BFI: an Exploratory Study for Image-based Personality Test
2016Co-Authors: Jitao Sang, Huaiwen Zhang, Changsheng XuAbstract:This paper positions and explores the topic of image-based Personality Test. Instead of responding to text-based questions, the subjects will be provided a set of "choose-your-favorite-image" visual questions. With the image options of each question belonging to the same concept, the subjects' Personality traits are estimated by observing their preferences of images under several unique concepts. The solution to design such an image-based Personality Test consists of concept-question identification and image-option selection. We have presented a preliminary framework to regularize these two steps in this exploratory study. A demo version of the designed image-based Personality Test is available at this http URL Subjective as well as objective evaluations have demonstrated the feasibility of image-based Personality Test in limited questions.

a demo for image based Personality Test
2017Co-Authors: Huaiwen Zhang, Jiaming Zhang, Jitao SangAbstract:In this demo, we showcase an image-based Personality Test. Compared with the traditional text-based Personality Test, the proposed new Test is more natural, objective, and language-insensitive. With each question consisting of images describing the same concept, the subjects are requested to choose their favorite image. Based on the choices to typically 15–25 questions, we can accurately estimate the subjects’ Personality traits. The whole process costs less than 5 min. The online demo adapts well to PCs and smart phones, which is available at http://www.visualbfi.org/.

content validity does matter for the criterion related validity of Personality Tests
2009Co-Authors: Kristl H Davison, Mark N BingAbstract:In Murphy’s (2009) focal article, ‘‘Content Validation Is Useful for Many Things, but Validity Isn’t One of Them,’’ he focuses primarily on Tests of knowledge, skills, and abilities, and whether content validity leads to criterion-related validity for such characteristics. With respect to Personality Testing, however, he notes that the ‘‘jury is still out over the question of whether content validity makes any real differences in contexts such as . . . Personality Tests’’ (p. 462). However, we believe that research on the frame-of-reference effect in Personality Testing clearly indicates that increased content validity of Personality Tests enhances their criterion-related validity. Several studies thus far have investigated the frame-of-reference effect in Personality (e.g., Bing, Whanger, Davison, & VanHook, 2004; Lievens, DeCorte, & Schollaert, 2008; Schmit, Ryan, Stierwalt, & Powell, 1995). The fundamental idea underlying the frameof-reference effect is that contextualizing self-report Personality Test items to specific situations (e.g., academic, work), and thus improving their content validity, can facilitate more accurate self-presentations
