Socio-demographic factors associated with Pet Ownership amongst adolescents from a UK birth cohort.

Both physical and psychological health benefits may result from owning a Pet during childhood and adolescence. However, it is difficult to determine whether these benefits are due to Pet Ownership directly or to factors linked to both Pet Ownership and health. Previous research found associations between a range of socio-demographic factors and Pet Ownership in seven-year-old children from a UK cohort. The current study extends this research to adolescence, considering that these factors may be important to consider in future Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) research across childhood. The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) collected Pet Ownership data prospectively via maternal reports from gestation up to age 10 years old and via self-report retrospectively at age 18 for ages 11 (n = 3063) to 18 years old (n = 3098) on cats, dogs, rabbits, rodents, birds, fish, tortoise/turtles and horses. The dataset also contains a wide range of potential confounders, including demographic and socio-economic variables. The Ownership of all Pet types peaked at age 11 (80%) and then decreased during adolescence, with the exclusion of cats which remained constant (around 30%), and dogs which increased through 11–18 years (26–37%). Logistic regression was used to build multivariable models for Ownership of each Pet type at age 13 years, and the factors identified in these models were compared to previously published data for 7 year-olds in the same cohort. There was some consistency with predictors reported at age 7. Generally sex, birth order, maternal age, maternal education, number of people in the household, house type, and concurrent Ownership of other Pets were associated with Pet Ownership at both 7 and 13 years (the direction of association varied according to Pet type). Factors that were no longer associated with adolescent Pet Ownership included child ethnicity, paternal education, and parental social class. A number of socio-demographic factors are associated with Pet Ownership in childhood and adolescence and they differ according to the type of Pet, and age of child. These factors are potential confounders that must be considered in future HAI studies.

Associations of Pet Ownership with wheezing and lung function in childhood: Findings from a UK birth cohort

The aim of this study was to investigate whether Pet Ownership during pregnancy and early childhood was associated with wheezing from birth to age 7 years and with lung function at age 8 years in a UK population-based birth cohort. METHODS: Data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) were used to investigate associations of Pet Ownership at six time-points from pregnancy to age 7 years with concurrent episodes of wheezing, wheezing trajectories (phenotypes) and lung function at age 8 years using logistic regression models adjusted for child's sex, maternal history of asthma/atopy, maternal smoking during pregnancy, and family adversity. RESULTS: 4,706 children had complete data on Pet Ownership and wheezing. From birth to age 7 years, cat Ownership was associated with an overall 6% lower odds of wheezing (OR=0.94 (0.89-0.99)). Rabbit and rodent Ownership was associated with 21% (OR=1.21 (1.12-1.31)) and 11% (OR=1.11 (1.02-1.21)) higher odds of wheezing, respectively, with strongest effects evident during infancy. Rabbit and rodent Ownership was positively associated with a 'persistent wheeze' phenotype. Pet Ownership was not associated with lung function at age 8 years, with the exception of positive associations of rodent and bird Ownership with better lung function. CONCLUSIONS: Cat Ownership was associated with reduced risk, and rabbit and rodent Ownership with increased risk, of wheezing during childhood. The mechanisms behind these differential effects warrant further investigation.

Methods Data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) were used to investigate associations of Pet Ownership at six time points from pregnancy to the age of 7 with asthma, atopy (grass, house dust mite, and cat skin prick test) and atopic vs. non-atopic asthma at the age of 7 using logistic regression models adjusted for child's sex, maternal history of asthma/atopy, maternal smoking during pregnancy, and family adversity. Differential effects of Pet Ownership on atopic vs. non-atopic asthma were evident for all Pet types. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance Pet Ownership during pregnancy and childhood in this birth cohort was consistently associated with a reduced risk of aeroallergen sensitization and atopic asthma at the age of 7, but tended to be associated (particularly for rabbits and rodents) with an increased risk of non-atopic asthma. The opposing effects on atopy vs. non-atopic asthma might be considered by parents when they are deciding whether to acquire a Pet.

Studies of Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) have proposed that there are health benefits and risks associated with Pet Ownership. However, accurately demonstrating and understanding these relationships first requires a better knowledge of factors associated with Ownership of different Pet types. A UK birth cohort, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), were used to collect Pet Ownership data from the mothers, from gestation to child age 10 years old. 14,663 children were included in the study, of which mothers of 13,557 reported Pet information at gestation, and 7,800 by age 10. Pet types recorded include cat, dog, rabbit, rodent, bird, fish and tortoise/turtle. The dataset also contains a number of demographic, socioeconomic and behavioural variables relevant to human health behaviour. Logistic regression was used to build multivariable models for Ownership of each Pet type at age 7 years. Family Pet Ownership increased during childhood, in particular rabbits, rodents and fish. A number of socioeconomic and demographic factors were associated with Ownership of different Pet types and the effects differed depending on the Pet type studied. Variables which require consideration by researchers include gender, presence of older siblings, ethnicity, maternal and paternal education, maternal and paternal social class, maternal age, number of people in the household, house type, and concurrent Ownership of other Pets. Whether the mother had Pets during her childhood was a strong predictor of Pet Ownership in all models. In HAI studies, care should be taken to control for confounding factors, and to treat each Pet type individually. ALSPAC and other similar birth cohorts can be considered a potential resource for research into the effects of Pet Ownership during childhood.

Walking the dog: is Pet Ownership associated with physical activity in California?

In this study, we explored associations between Pet Ownership and physical activity in a large, ethnically diverse population-based sample in California. Method: Data from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) were used to assess the associations between Pet Ownership (ie, dog, dog and cat, cat, and non–Pet owners) and transportation and leisure walking in a sample of 41,514 adults. Logistic regression was used to assess associations between Pet Ownership and type of walking, and linear regression was used to assess associations between Pet Ownership and total minutes walking per week. Results: Dog owners were slightly less likely to walk for transportation than were non–Pet owners (OR = 0.91; 95% CI: 0.85 to 0.99) but more likely to walk for leisure than non–Pet owners (OR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.5 to 1.8) in multivariate analyses. We examined the association between Pet Ownership in toddlerhood (age 3.5 years) and poor emotional expression in later childhood (age 5.5 years) using propensity score matching within a longitudinal cohort dataset from Japan (n = 31,453). A propensity score for Pet Ownership was calculated by logistic models based on a comprehensive list of each child's observed characteristics, including sex, household income, parental education, mother's employment status, residential environment, number of siblings, and living arrangement. Log-binomial regression analyses using matched samples revealed that children who owned Pets during the toddler years were 6% less likely to have a poor emotional expression in later childhood (prevalence ratio = 0.94, 95% confidence interval = 0.90⁻0.99) compared to those without Pets. This suggests that owning Pets may provide children with opportunities to control their emotions, and lead to a lower prevalence of poor emotional expression. Pet Ownership in toddlerhood may contribute to the development of expression.
