Petroleum Geology of cretaceous tertiary rift basins in niger chad and central african republic
AAPG Bulletin, 1993Co-Authors: G J GenikAbstract:This overview of the Petroleum Geology of rift basins in Niger, Chad, and Central African Republic (CAR) is based on exploration work by Exxon and partners in the years 1969-1991. The work included 50,000 km of modern reflection seismic, 53 exploration wells, 1,000,000 km2 of aeromagnetic coverage, and about 10,500 km of gravity profiles. The results outline ten Cretaceous and Tertiary rift basins, which constitute a major part of the West and Central African rift system (WCARS). The rift basins derive from a multiphased geologic history dating from the Pan-African (approximately 750-550 Ma) to the Holocene. Main rifting was probably caused by the stretching and subsidence of African crustal blocks during the breakup of Gondwana in the Early Cretaceous and by r activated plate movements in the early Tertiary. WCARS in the study area is divided into the West African rift subsystem (WAS) and the Central African rift subsystem (CAS). WAS basins in Niger and Chad are chiefly extensional, and are filled by up to 13,000 m of Lower Cretaceous to Holocene continental and marine clastics. The basins contain five oil (19-43°API) and two oil and gas accumulations in Upper Cretaceous and Eocene sandstone reservoirs. The hydrocarbons are sourced and sealed by Upper Cretaceous and Eocene marine and lacustrine shales. The most common structural styles and hydrocarbon traps usually are associated with normal fault blocks. CAS rift basins in Chad and CAR are extensional and transtensional, and are filled by up to 7500 m of chiefly Lower Cretaceous continental clastics. The basins contain eight oil (15-39°API) and one oil and gas discovery in Lower and Upper Cretaceous sandstone reservoirs. The hydrocarbons are sourced by Lower Cretaceous shales and sealed by interbedded lacustrine and flood-plain shales. Structural styles range from simple fault blocks through complex flower structures. The main hydrocarbon traps are in contractional anticlines. Geological conditions favor the discovery of potentially commercial volumes of oil in WCARS basins of Niger, Chad and CAR.

However, as a general consensus, unconventional Petroleum is defined as the oil and gas resources not recoverable under the currently available economic and technical conditions. Normally, unconventional Petroleum is divided into unconventional oil and unconventional natural gas resources. The former refers to tight sandstone oil, tight limestone oil, heavy (thick) oil, oil-sand oil, shale oil, and oil-shale oil. The latter includes tight sandstone gas, (Coal bed methane) CBM, shale gas, and natural gas hydrates. Unconventional Petroleum Geology is a new subdiscipline of Petroleum Geology that examines the type of unconventional Petroleum, fine-grained deposits, micro- and nanoscale reservoirs, formation mechanism, distribution characteristics, enrichment pattern, evaluation method, core technologies, development strategies, and economic viability of oil and gas. Unconventional Petroleum has become an important type of oil and natural gas Petroleum.

Development of Petroleum Geology in China: Discussion on continuous Petroleum accumulation

Oil and gas reservoirs have been divided into two types based on the trapping mechanism and distribution of oil and gas: conventional single-trap reservoirs, such as the Daqing oil field in Songliao Basin and the Kela-2 gas field in Tarim Basin; and unconventional continuous Petroleum accumulation, such as Upper Paleozoic tight gas and Mesozoic tight oil in Ordos Basin, and Upper Triassic tight gas in Sichuan Basin. Two typical geologic characteristics of continuous Petroleum accumulation involve: (1) coexisting source and reservoir, Petroleum pervasive throughout a large area tight reservoirs, and no obvious traps or well-defined water-oil and gas contracts; (2) non-buoyancy accumulation, continuous Petroleum charge, and no significant influence by buoyancy. Continuous Petroleum accumulation generally have nm-scale pore throats, and the diameters range of 10-500 nm. The geometry and connectivity of these pore throats has significant impact on the migration and distribution of oil and gas in continuous Petroleum accumulation. China has numerous continuous Petroleum accumulation containing various Petroleum deposits, and the exploration of continuous resources is very promising. Unconventional Petroleum Geology will become an important new subject in Petroleum Geology in future, and the nano-technology will function greatly on research, exploration and development of the hydrocarbon accumulation in nanopore-throats.

They started life over 35 years ago, in 1974, with a focus solely on North-West Europe, and have a reputation, both from the conferences and the accompanying Proceedings volumes, of being at the forefront of Petroleum geoscience; the standard reference for successive generations of Petroleum geoscientists. North-West Europe has matured as a Petroleum province and, at the same time, the conference series has matured to be a truly global event. Chapter 13: Outcrop Gamma-Ray Logging Applied to Subsurface Petroleum Geology

PietraszekAbstract:Abstract Developing a gamma-ray log profile of an outcrop with a hand-held scintillometer has many applications to subsurface Petroleum Geology. The outcrop gamma-ray log provides a readily understandable bridge between what is observed in outcrop and what is to be interpreted on well logs and seismic records. Several examples are presented in this paper that demonstrate major applications. An outcrop from the Cretaceous Mesaverde Group in Colorado provides an excellent example of the use of outcrop gamma-ray logs to better visualize spatial variability of depositional settings for improved well log correlations. Outcrops from the Cretaceous Almond Formation, Niobrara Formation, and Graneros Shale in Colorado serve as examples of outcrop gamma-ray logging used to correlate outcrops with their subsurface equivalents for improved lithologic and stratigraphic interpretation of well logs. Outcrops of the Cretaceous Sharon Springs Member of the Pierre Shale in Colorado and the Eocene Green River Formation in Wyoming provide examples of the application of outcrop-gamma ray logging to identify and characterize organic-rich shales in outcrops and on well logs. Outcrops of the Pennsylvanian Jackfork Formation in Arkansas demonstrate the use of outcrop logging to yield improved interpretation of reservoir quality on well logs and for one- and two-dimensional seismic modeling. An outcrop of Precambrian and Cambro-Ordovician rocks from Algeria provides an example of outcrop logging to recognize unconformities and other major surfaces on well logs. An outcrop of the Niobrara Formation in Colorado is used as an example for improved understanding of horizontal gamma-ray log response. The example logs presented are all derived with a hand-held scintillometer. This technique is simple, quick, and relatively inexpensive, so is recommended for any outcrop work that is intended to be applied to subsurface well logs or seismic interpretation.
