  • ‘Making room for the tigers and the polar bears’: Biography, Phantasy and ideology in the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement

    Abstract:

    This paper examines the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement, a group whose members make a commitment to halting their own reproduction as part of an effort to reduce the human population. Some of the group's members support the continuation of this reduction until the species has become extinct. Drawing on some of the principles of ‘deep ecology’ to justify this, activists argue for the value in repairing damage done to non-human nature, while they also point to the benefits to humans of a declining population. However, in focusing on a single case study, this paper foregrounds the biographical factors that motivate association with the movement. Psychoanalytic theory is applied to explain the fantasy of a future world without humans. The article concludes with a discussion of some of the ways in which such analysis can be integrated into social movement theory.

    Psychoanalysis has a long history of influence in the study of collective behaviour, and this paper argues that it has a great deal to contribute to the study of one vitally important and under-researched aspect of social movement activity; the fantasies activists have about life in the social worlds they would like to see in the future. The paper uses empirical research findings to show that, in the case of activists campaigning to further the human exploration, development and settlement of outer space, these fantasies can be fundamental to activists' motivation. Psychoanalysis helps us understand these fantasies as conscious manifestations of unconscious phantasies. However, the paper also addresses the criticisms social movement theory has made of reductionist psychoanalysis, arguing that the study of activists' fantasies must include accounts of the ways in which social forces influence unconscious processes, the discourses used by activists to understand their cause, and the organization of the move...

  • Pro-space Activism and Narcissistic Phantasy

    Abstract:

    This paper uses psychoanalytic theory to understand the motivation of pro-space activists – people campaigning to increase human activity in outer space. It suggests that activists are motivated by fantasies of a spacefaring civilization, which manifest unconscious phantasies of omnipotence and fusion related to the experience of self in primary narcissism. The argument of the paper is that in order to understand this pursuit of a phantasized self, we must locate activists within the cultural conditions that encourage secondary narcissism. This is one example of how psychoanalytically informed social theory can account for the relationship between social structure and the motivation of political activists.

  • Weak Phantasy and visionary Phantasy: the phenomenological significance of altered states of consciousness

    In this paper we discuss the definitional problems of altered states of consciousness and their potential relevance in phenomenological investigation. We suggest that visionary states or visionary Phantasy working induced by psychedelics (VSs) , as extraordinary types of altered states, are appropriate subjects for phenomenological analysis. Naturally, visionary states are not quite ordinary workings of the human mind, however certain cognitive psychological and evolutionary epistemological investigations show that they can give new insights into the nature of consciousness. Furthermore, we suggest that contemporary inquiries concerning altered states in consciousness studies give an opportunity to complete the contemporary phenomenological investigations of Phantasy with the notion of visionary Phantasy . Here we propose that the similarities and differences between Dieter Lohmar’s weak Phantasy (which has a crucial role in empathy and typifying perception) and Benny Shanon’s concept of vision are precisely discernible, and, consequently, it may be possible that weak Phantasy and visionary Phantasy are situated on the two outermost poles of the colorful spectrum of Phantasy activity.

    Summary Phantasy Therapy is an interdisciplinary depth-psychologically oriented group therapy form with focus on the treatment of psychoses in acute and remission phases. A different theme is presented to the patients every week on two consecutive days (90 min per session), coherently, via various sensory channels. On the first day, the theme is concretely and operationally introduced by means of an object, transformed into movement in the broadest sense of the word, and experienced directly with the body. The first session ends with a story, usually a fairy tale or parable, so that the body experiences can be further realized symbolically at the cognitive-emotional level. The second session treats the same theme via repetition of the chosen story with the deeper transformation of symbols into color and form. The first day is jointly led by a psychotherapist and a movement/dance therapist, the second day by a psychotherapist and an art therapist. Our approach understands therapy as a somatesthetic experience- and synesthetic expression-oriented encounter with the patient via the therapist’s empathic imaginative identification with the patient by means of a progressively orchestrated, positivizing, cognitive-emotional, theme-centered rapport. In this connection six therapeutic elements are of importance: theme, object, movement, fairy tale, artwork, symbol. Phantasy Therapy offers the patient creative freedom in a humorous and playful way within a certain therapeutic security (Amae principle) and contradicts several classical prejudices concerning the treatment of psychotic patients.
