  • a new semi Phenomenological Approach to predict the stress relaxation behavior of thermoplastic elastomers
    Polymer, 2005
Co-Authors: Stephan A Baeurle, Atsushi Hotta, Andrei A Gusev
    Abstract:

Abstract In this paper we report on a new semi-Phenomenological Approach to predict the stress relaxation behavior of thermoplastic elastomers at long times. This Approach relies on the method of Gurtovenko and Gotlib [J Chem Phys 115 (2001) 6785], which has originally been conceived to describe the relaxation dynamics of inhomogeneously crosslinked polymers forming agglomerations of crosslinks. In this work we demonstrate that the method can be extended to predict the stretched exponential stress decay of homogeneously crosslinked thermoplastic elastomers, which are subjected to an extensional strain pertaining to the nonlinear regime of mechanical properties. In our Approach thermal fluctuations induce fluctuations in size of domains of crosslinks via a chain-pullout mechanism. We compare our theoretical predictions to the experimental measurements of Hotta et al. [Macromolecules 35 (2002) 271] performed on poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) triblock copolymers, which are composed of hard domains of polystyrene embedded in a rubbery polyisoprene matrix. Our study confirm the importance of the chain-pullout mechanism in the stress relaxation process and demonstrates the involvement of multiple time- and structural-length-scales.

  • WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE Phenomenological Approach TO RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
    Religious Education, 2001
    Co-Authors: L. Philip Barnes
    Abstract:

In this article the Phenomenological Approach to religious education is subjected to careful analysis and criticism. Something of the contemporary debate on the nature of religious education between liberals and conservatives is sketched in, before the origins and nature of the Phenomenological Approach to the study of religion are considered. This is followed by an account of the way in which the phenomenology of religion proper has been appropriated by educationalists and developed into what is regarded as a suitable methodology for religious education. Finally, it is argued that certain features of a Phenomenological Approach to religion are untenable in the light of recent work in the philosophy of language and mind.

  • Ninian Smart and the Phenomenological Approach to Religious Education
    Religion, 2000
    Co-Authors: L. Philip Barnes
    Abstract:

This essay reviews and assesses Ninian Smart's contribution to religious education. Attention is given to his account of the nature and purpose of religious education as expressed and developed in a series of works published between the late 1960s and the early 1970s, beginning with The Teacher and Christian Belief (1966) and ending with Schools Council Working Paper 36, Religious Education in the Secondary School (1971), which was produced under his direction. Continuities and tensions in his thought are identified and discussed in the context of recent debates within religious education and the academic study of religion. Smart's case for non-confessional religious education is considered, as is his support for a Phenomenological Approach to religious education. Although serious criticisms are raised, it is concluded that his work is of abiding significance and relevance to both British education and beyond.

  • unified dark energy models a Phenomenological Approach
    Physical Review D, 2004
    Co-Authors: V F Cardone, A Troisi, Salvatore Capozziello
    Abstract:

A Phenomenological Approach is proposed to the problem of the accelerated expansion of the Universe and of the nature of dark energy. A general class of models is introduced whose energy density depends on the redshift z in such a way that a smooth transition among the three main phases of the evolution of the Universe (radiation era, matter domination, asymptotical de Sitter state) is naturally achieved. We use the estimated age of the Universe, the Hubble diagram of type-Ia supernovae, and the angular size\char21{}redshift relation for compact and ultracompact radio structures, to test whether the model is in agreement with astrophysical observation and to constrain its main parameters. Although Phenomenologically motivated, the model may be straightforwardly interpreted as a two-fluid scenario in which the quintessence is generated by a suitably chosen scalar field potential. On the other hand, the same model may also be read in the context of unified dark energy models or in the framework of modified Friedmann equation theories.
