    Abstract:

    Abstract The potential of Fourier transform infrared Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (FTIR-PAS) to examine successive layers of meat (beef and pork) was studied. Sample preparation for FTIR-PAS measurement was simple and nondestructive. Spectra of meat samples using the more conventional Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) accessory were also obtained for validation of the Photoacoustic Spectroscopy. Comparison of the Photoacoustic and attenuated total reflectance spectra indicated that the PAS spectra were better resolved and more sensitive to moisture variation with respect to sample depth.

    Abstract:

    The potential of Fourier transform infrared Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (FT-IR/PAS) for examination of food and the package was demonstrated. Full-fat cheddar cheese slices wrapped in polymer package were chosen as the food sample for analysis. Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (PAS) in conjunction with the step-scan and digital signal processing (DSP) function was used to perform depth-profiling studies of the intact sample and package. Well-separated PAS bands of fat and protein were obtained in the spectra of cheddar cheese samples with minimum sample preparation. Cheese samples were kept in a dessicator overnight to minimize the effect of moisture on the PAS spectra. Depth profiling study of the cheese polymer package indicated that there is a diffusion of cheese components into the package during storage.     A Photoacoustic Spectroscopy based sensor for aerosol optical absorption measurement was developed. The sensor was calibrated with NO2 absorption. The minimum detectable optical absorption coefficient of aerosol was determined to be 1 Mm-1.

    Abstract:

    An off-beam (OB) detection approach is suggested and experimentally investigated and optimized for quartz-enhanced Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (QEPAS). This OB-QEPAS configuration, very simple in assembly, not only allows for use of larger excitation optical beams and facilitating optical alignment but also provides higher enhancement of Photoacoustic signals than previously published results based on the common on-beam QEPAS under the same experimental conditions. A normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient (1σ) of 5.9×10−9 cm−1W/Hz1/2 was obtained for water vapor detection at normal atmospheric pressure.
