During preparation of a TLC ink standard library, several types of inconsistencies were observed. Observations of more than 100 chromatograms of writing inks indicated the need for the institution of quality control procedures. Procedures were developed to ensure proper solvent selection, TLC plate selection, and proper Photographic Recording of TLC plates. Implementing quality control procedures in TLC enables the document examiner and forensic chemist to achieve these results.

The exposure times for Photographic Recording of the darkfield and the brightfield micrographs were 2 min and 5 sec, respectively, at an electron-optical magnification of 20,000 times. The thickness of the MgO crystals and the height of the steps of 2.1 A were measured from convergent-beam electron diffraction patterns.

Theoretical basis for real-time shearography

SimAbstract:The principle behind the formation of high resolution live fringe patterns by real-time shearography is presented. It is shown that linear and nonlinear Photographic Recordings both yield instantaneous fringe patterns which depict the instantaneous surface displacement gradient of the object. However, in theory, nonlinear Photographic Recording results in lower fringe visibility compared with linear Photographic Recording. In either case, real-time shearography requires a simple optical setup and eliminates the need for Fourier filtering during fringe read-out. It is also found that the fringe characteristics of real-time and double exposure methods differ by a phase angle of 180 degrees.
